So it seems Motlop has replaced Varcoe.
Not sure why you cant have 4 loop runners, never mind 2, but anyhoo.

Poll away.

Well I wouldn't. When in form, he is a gun. His gut running is awesome (last quarter goal in '11 gf). He is horribly out of form at the minute, and may need to be dropped. Perhaps 2013 isn't his year. Would not want us to carry guys ala 2010. Time will tell

Am I correct , the proposition is that we be proactive and seek to trade him , not that he wants to go so we then agree to trade him?

Hard choices are a part of list management but unless are backed into a corner , id prefer not to.

We don’t have that many players on our list with genuine breakaway leg speed. Trav is one. He’s 25, given a reasonable run win injury, he’ll be an important player for us for many years.

Im not even thinking re pure on grass talent. We have to be incredibly careful when treating players like playing cards ie Moneyball type trading. I watched the Richmond doc on Foxtel the other Sun. Good job showing what happen when you forget about treating your club players poorly.

That's a very good point, Turbo.
It's particularly treue when you're talking about a player cruelled by injuries and who is clearly rated by his team-mates.
It's even more true when you have a list squeeze and are going to rely at least partially on the fringe players' loyalty and belief that they'll get a fair go here.

our world renowned fountain of knowledge of all things varcoe, meto, has said that we should trade him in 2 separate threads.

i think this thread is vc's ode to our fountain.

I would be surprised if Varcoe is not shopped around at year's end. The only question is if he will have any takers (in Adelaide) with 1 year of a very large contract to run.

Not questioning the guys ability, love him as a player, but I understand he agitated to go home last year.

I would be keen to try and arrange something involving Yarran, if Carlton are moving him on, so we have a like for like replacement.

Sorry guys,.....Yarran! my word I would,...in a heartbeat!

Hmmmmm, pick 10, in any draft...

Varcoe is a hard one to gauge. If he could produce his best on a consistent basis (think 2011) then I'd think most people wouldn't entertain the thought.

However, consistency is something I think he has struggled with over the journey and his injuries haven't helped him.

Weighing a whole bunch of things up in my head, if I was offered pick 10 in any draft, yep, I'd pull the trigger and back Motlop, Smedts and Murdoch to fill the void.

Add possible draftees or free agents down the track and I think you could cover his departure.

In some ways it is an easy decision for me to do that deal because I don't really think he is worth pick 10 (even at his best).

Would we entertain Yarran Pivo?....what's your thoughts on him?

Yarran is extremely inconsistent, lazy and so, so overrated. Do not want.

Why are we discussing trading Varcoe anyway? He hasn't given any indication that he wants to leave and the club hasn't given any indication they don't want him in our future. This is only proven in the fact that the MC keep selecting him in the team regardless of form.

Yeah I used pick 10 because it needed to be the type of carrot that would at least make everyone think about it.

No way would I replace him with Yarran.

So what you're saying Meto is that you'd replace Varcoe with a similar player. Yet in every bloody post you make about Varcoe you knock the fact that he is an outside runner.

WTF?

Varcoe is actually averaging almost identical stats to Yarran. What makes you think we'd come out winners in that deal?

And by the way. Over his Career Yarran has averaged 13.7 possessions per game (10.3 this year)

You have lost the plot Meto.

Motlop is a star, but provides little defensively. You'll rarely see Motlop chase down someone.

Varcoe is superb at defensive pressure when he's up and running, and also provides run offensively. Watch the highlights of round 1 against Hawthorn - if he can hit form similar we are a 5-10% better side

Maybe chuck Varcoe back to the half back line or wing and keep Motlop up forward, who knows.

In short - We need both!

To be fair to Meto, I introduced Yarran into the discussion, not him. And it was in the context of Varcoe wanting to move.

If Varcoe wants to stay at Geelong and is happy to sign a contract extension I would keep him.

I just believe he will move and I think Yarran would be a good replacement.
