Varc was reasonable tonight. Positioned himself well mostly, was a bit casual at times that led to turnovers (and goals against us). Still a long way off his best, but tracking in the right direction.

Personally I thought Stringer looked promising and did some nice things tonight, after all he hasn't played a senior game for some time, he acquitted himselfquite well I thought.

Also that Stringer kick to Selwood on the run forward of centre was better than anything Varcoe produced tonight, I wouldn't peg him for a low skill player to soon.
He's no mug.

I wasn't knocking Stringer, he was very good. And that pass to Selwood was top shelf.

But he's not a silky receiver who will run and carry, he's a hard nut who plays his best footy getting the ball.

My point is, he's not fighting for Varcoe's position, for that role.

Right, I get your point probably not, but gee he was starting to look pretty comfortable in the heat of battle, still had time to think about it, I liked that.

'Me',....for a hard ball mate, Stringer ever time.

way too much hate in this thread, not enough unbias comments
stringer was average
sheringham was better
bews was nowhere

all 3 players are playing for a game when caddy, smedts, sj and alan come into contention

So you think he's the bloke to play the outside receiving, run and carry role?

It's amazing that people don't realise that every side needs the outside runners. What would have been the point of having Nathan Buckley or Craig Bradley down the bottom of every pack?

Back flank through the middle I was thinking, but we got a pretty good one that does that in James Kelly, Kel went alright tonight!
No! Stringer's got something there, just can't get a enough senior experience to develop.
Maybe he's the go after Kel.

How many times have you watched that game? Watch the last quarter, which may have been the quarter of that handball, Varcoe along with Ablett and Byrnes were about the only 3 with any run left in their legs. He was as important as anyone in winning that game.

If you're going to criticise him, try and pick a game where he deserved it.

I thought he was just ok tonight. Gave up 2 goals from either being soft or being out of his comfort zone on the last line of defence. Take your pick.
yes he was very good int that game but his crap handball on the wing has been repeated many many times since. That's my point.

I thought he did more brilliant than bad and had one of, if not his best game for 2014.
Agree with this. He unfortunately had a couple of moments in defensive 50 that led to a couple of goals, but his ball getting & involvement in the first half at least was as good as it's been for a while.

I'd like him to be a bit more decisive when approaching the attacking 50, probably take more shots than he does. I loved Motlop's confidence to have a ping from 50 for example, TV seems reluctant to do that at times. I suppose he lacks the brashness that can help other players. Sometimes I'd rather a miss than a kick to a pocket. Of course passes lace out to Hawkins straight in front are handy too :)

one of those was actually a push in the back, similar to what was paid earlier against us...but thought he was average overall.

stringer isnt developing, like sheringham they are "break glass in emergency" types.

So you're willing to put a knock on him but never Varcoe, "Jess played damn well by foot and hand," also went in hard when needed, a dimension Varcoe will never possess.
Thing is, he isn't a regular 100 game player like Varcoe remember that, he's forced to pick up the tempo from VFL footy which to his credit he did. Making the transition is tough as you know, your negativity is perception of him as a Varcoe threat imo.

Varcoe's not tough enough for HBF, Stringer is, you got to be willing to put body on line in defense, Varcoe's a winger at best, not in direct competition in my view.

Stringer might be a bit harder in the packs then Varcoe. But so is an inanimate steel rod. Doesn't mean they can play footballer better.

Some of this varcoe bashing is ridiculous.

He made a few errors tonight but he also did some brilliant things.

TV just gets held to higher accountability on this board than others for his mistakes.

Give and go, lace out to Hawkins was perfect from TV tonight, more of it!

Two really poor moments took the gloss of Travs night, with out reading the thread or looking at a replay,1 he was done like a dinner by Narhas?(spelling)out bodied in a marking contest that resulted in a goal, not even sure he made any body contact at all.2 the one handed effort to force a rushed behind in the goal square that let north in for a cheapy.Over all a better effort and probable drew even with himself on the night if there is any such thing.

you really do just read what you want to read...i posted varcoe was average, go back and have a look.

With his age and experience there's no excuse, any decent form was 5-6 years ago, you find form in the two's, senior footy should be that serious or are we that amateurish.

Vdubs, you must have a shrine in your spare room.
Are you some sort of spy?
Varcoe, WOJO, Blake, Hawkins, BLICAVS, Ling, Chapman, Mackie, Abletts, Turner, Goggin, Newman, Bews, Gamble, Lynch..These are a few of my favourite things.
Getting around to Guthrie and Murdoch too.

What were his 19 possessions like for eff%?
Why pick on 2 errors, when really, his game was pleasing to watch for all who were there to see it.
There was another occasion he was forced into a one handed mark v NDS, and beat him, set up something special.
He is a very gifted player who displayed that last pm, and there is nobody better to displace him.

So there's "not enough unbias" (-ed) comments, but you think Bews, in his 2nd game, was nowhere?

For what it's worth I thought Stringer was clearly better than Sheringham too. And yes they might be all playing for a game when those others return, but you can only judge them on last night.

Blake, Blicavs and Gamble are some of your favourites? Can I ask why? I get why you defend them as players but I don't get why you would list them as favourites ahead of the likes of Johnson, Enright, Hocking, Bartel, Scarlett, Corey, Chapman etc?

He was ok last night but his game against Brisbane was far far better.
