Toast Travis Varcoe

Best way to describe the two is the above

Harry will break a pack and run away probably spraying it

Varcoe will get given the footy and hit a lead up on the chest

Both have negatives and positives but we need blokes hitting targets which Varcoe can do

I watched Lumumba on the weekend and he was excellent. Better than Varcoe I'm afraid. But them's the breaks.

I don't think he was that great, a couple of flashes but what did he have, 12 touches? Varcoe's a better kick... Harry has more dash... lineball IMO

About to watch the game again but my first watching of the game was definitely not a toast worthy one for Varcoe. Serviceable at best and missed two gettable goals from memory. Bottom 5 player for me at the moment

Then what about Cloke’s Kicking for Goal Then?

Then what about Cloke’s Kicking for Goal Then?

I didn't see the Cloke Toast thread?

My point was that Varcoe's game was ok but in my opinion was not worthy of a Toast. Not sure if it was the dead leg in the marking contest but he looked slow, didn't get to enough contests and he also missed a couple of goals even though his main asset is supposed to be as a finisher.

Just wish he attacked the Ball more instead of waiting for someone to get the ball to him

Spot on...I guess he is too used to being handed kicks on a plate by Bartel, Selwood and Co. He also seemed to have trouble taking the ball at the first grab, but he had a few mates...

Varcoe>Young

Give him a few games he will be good for us did a few nice things.

He will be a good finisher or provide good final pass to our forwards.

He seems to play well in the dry MCG conditions looking forward to seeing him on ANZAC Day
Also I think he'll look a much better player at Etihad Stadium. He needs a dry track to really emphasise his attributes, like most players that have great skills but aren't hard at it types. He is like the original version of Stephen Hill or Isaac Smith. Neither of those two lads look $1 million in the wet, but you'd have them in your team any day for what they provide with their run and carry and kicking.

Averages less disposals at Etihad than he does at KP and the MCG, FWIW.

That surprises me.... Still I think he'll work his way into one of our better and most consistent performers. Looking forward to seeing him running down the wing at the "G and spearing Cloke with a 40 metre pass that strips the skin from his fingers and tears his princess madonna glove to shreds.

Yeah, probably right. He was good in the last NAB cup game, which I somehow fused with the one against goldcoast. Still think he's a better played than Varcoe in the end.

Overall he is, Varcoe is a better kick, and that's something we really need. Hope it works out as a win/win. Clark would have been nicer to have though!

In the end we have an abundance of running defenders with average skills, plenty of 'grunt' type mids. If we have to sacrifice some hardness for a bit of polish it's probably not a bad thing. Conditions didn't suit but he was still ok. If he kicks 25 goals off a wing/flank I'd say that's a good result.

I'll take Varcoe every day of the week.

Harry's line breaks are literally pointless when the disposal results in a turnover. Which it does 9/10 times.

I think he'll play himself into a worthwhile role into our side. We'll see his true value to us from about mistreat after he has settled and played a few games with the boys

I'm not sure i would have given him a "toast" thread after Saurday's game. He was adequate but hardly outstanding.

Considering everyone's expectations were through the floor, I think he would almost have gotten a toast for putting his boots on the right feet.

After a couple of his shots on goal I'm not convinced that they were!

Clark. Sigh. How good would it be to have him? Well, hopefully Grundy and Witts can play that forward/ruck role together.

Yeah unfortunate. Doesn't have a great track record with injuries though, so we'll see how it pans out.

I think with his footskills and pace, Varcoe can really have some value in a creative role on the wing and half forward (a la Sam Dwyer in 2013). His game against Brisbane - 16 disposals at 81% efficiency, with 4 inside 50s, 2 goal assists and a goal himself - indicates that's his role, and that he's already doing it pretty well.

I'd like to see this guy take the next step from being a 15-16 disposal per game type, to 20-21 disposals per game, as Lumumba did over the past couple of years, just to get that quality in a bit more quantity.

If he keeps running he'll be a gun, loved the way he presented for a low chest mark inside 50m. Can be a plodder at time but overal he should be decent.

Varcoe brings some strengths and I liked parts of his game, but I'm still not totally sold. Think it might come down to if you'd prefer 15-20 touches from Varoce vs 20-25 from Lumumba, ie he might get less of the ball, but hopefully uses it a little wiser and better, more consistently.

Also while Varcoe maybe an outside player and Clark would have been my preference, I'm glad we traded for Varcoe and not his ex-teammate Christdivesen, who may have also been a list fit in a small forward role. The amount of times he threw his head back, when there was no contact was embarrassing, that even the commentators were calling him out on it says a lot. If he was at Collingwood I'd be wanting him to stamp it out, not defending him to the hilt like several Brisbane fans.
Haha. I noticed that bigtime. At Geelong, he would have gotten a few of those. It was great to see the look on his face when the umps could clearly see what he was trying to do.

Varcoe is an outside runner with far better skills and decision making then Lumumba, but worse defensive side and attack on the ball. Our side needs his type more then a H type.

I think it's toast worthy considering how deplorable he was in the NAB cup game against the Dogs.
