I'll put my hand up here. I certainly had my doubts in 2008 and early 2009, not so much that he'd make it - I always thought he could play - more that he'd be a star. I reckon those doubts disappeared in last years GF, and even more so the first time he appeared on the park this year. He just looked like he belonged.
 
He has always had the talent , it was just a matter of him evolving into the player who took it on himself to do it. Trust his own skill , to become the 70M player. All this year he has showed signs but this game looks like the tipping point. The freaky thing is he is no where near peaking. In another 3 years his body should be stronger and his tank should be bigger.

One would say if his younger brother can become a similar player we will have the best Indigenous brothers since the Krakouers

Not only is he stronger and heavier than last year, he's faster.
Man he was lightning.
His shots at goal were brilliant. I love the way the ball spins.
I reckon he still lacks complete confidence. ie. he should have run an extra 15m and had a shot after that fend.

Like I said on the main board, Varcoe's like Cyril Rioli, but without the hype.

There's nothing Cyril's done that we haven't seen Varcoe do, but when Trav does it, Geelong fans don't start 10 threads on the main board about it, like Hawks supporters do.

I would take up membership.

I cried when Billy Ryan had to leave Geelong and the big league because his daughter suffered extreme Asthma.
The warmer climate of QLD was recommended and he became a legend at South Port.

But due to this being a Trav thread, I had better say that I thought that he was fantastic last night and should have bagged six.
 
As a huge fan of Travis since the day he walked into the club i'm totally rapt for him. :)

He's got a level of talent that few possess but injuries and the resultant issues have seen a number of his vital formative, development years effectively wasted.

Despite that he's come back and worked incredibly hard, got himself fit, got himself strong and the club have shown great faith in him.
Combine all those things and you've finally got a young man who is confident in the mind, confident in the body and confident in his ability.

As i've said before, he's just turned 22 and has only ever done one full pre-season so there's still an incredible amount of improvement in him (and believe me, much of his talent is still untapped).

He's very, very exciting.
 
I'll admit it, I've been on and off the Varcoe bandwagon more time than I can count. I was excited after we got him to the club, I remember Wells saying something like 'he would have been a higher draft pick if he hadn't broken his foot'. I recall him saying he was really happy to get him (although when doesn't a recruiter say that!). However, he would play awfully some games which would drive me crazy but the next game do something brilliant. Other times he just didn't seem to have confidence.

Anyway, it seems Varcoe has turned the corner - amazing what a preseason and a certain number of games will do. I'm wrapped for the fella.

He does have elements of Ablett's career progression, lets just hope it continues!!!
 
Just brilliant last night, and his improvement curve just keeps going up! His run in the Grand Final was vital for our chances, and this year despite the broken thumb he is just a machine. Fast, powerful enough to barge through with the ball, he is getting to the stage where he is reaching star status. And since he is only 22 and played just 63 games, he can onlyu go one way i reckon.

For what it's worth, Varcoe has played 63 games with Geelong, and as only not had to hear the team song sung just six times. The winningest player of all time for the number of games he's played.:thumbsu::D

It is no coincidence that since Varcoe's return we are faster, more potent and undefeated.


What is his contract status??? That's one thing we don't want to have to worry about. Absolutely critical for our long term future to keep him (and bro) indefinitely.

I'm guilty as charged on the first point as well.

On the second point I was thinking about this at work today and as it was very quiet I actually did the stats on the two of them.

After 63 games.

Varcoe

12.1 disposals
2.7 marks
3.7 tackles
1 goal
0.5 behinds

Ablett

14.2 disposals
2.3 marks
3.5 tackles
1.3 goals
0.94 behinds

I suppose there are two major points to take into account. Varcoe is playing in a much superior side and stats across the game have been inflated even since GAJ started out.

Comparing the 2 as others have suggested is crazy.

But so too are the stats. Yes they are increasingly meaningless but TV's effort in accruing his stats are very similar to baby Gaz.

It's all work ethic I think.

I don't think he would have progressed so quickly at say richmond, but drop him in that team now and I think he'd be just as effective.

Actually it was Cooparoo rabbi....I know this coz I played on him...I was very young....in my first year in 1st grade. The man was an absolute gentleman!
 
Great game foresure, but still like to see him back it up against the Saints, he's going about equal with Shannon now which is very good indeed.

But doing similar against hard team like the Saints is when I'll say he's in the top class at Geelong. A la Jimmy, Gary and Chappy.

I'll wait and see when it really counts, but great to see him get amongst the goals in a big way, but thought Shannon was great as well.

He was good. He did what you'd hope and expect of him. But it's not like he broke the game open.

He wasn't in the coaches' votes. I would expect that someone who was "bloody good" would at least be recognised by the coaches.

But as I said, thread title: "Travis Varcoe".
 
You know I was going to suggest a change of username for you newbie, but I get the feeling you know exactly what you are doing.

Just make the post boosting less obvious. You can start threads soon enough ;)
