Never said he wasn't valuable, but they've also got Milburn and Mackie to possibly provide some respite too.

I'm not saying Lonergan deserves to be dropped; on form he certainly doesn't. But go through the side - Blake, Simpson (probable), Mooney, Hawkins, Pods, Taylor, Scarlett, Lonergan, Mackie.

That's an extremely tall side. And the consensus view is Sydney's run out of their backline is one of their strengths. Therefore one of our big guys might have to miss out.

I agree.

I actually think Lonergan has been good, but I can't see us carrying 3 tall forwards, 3 tall backs, the giraffe and the baby giraffe, I think it's one too many. That's why I think it's down to Lonergan vs the baby giraffe and I'm not sure which will play.

Lonergan would be unlucky to miss, but I can see why it would happen.

I can recall a match when Polly kicked a lazy 5 against Carlton after being bagged in the Hun as " Pretty Polly " against " Big Nic " ( John Nicholls ) Classic stuff.

Looks like you're on the ball meto....the final team has Lonergan on the bench and no Simpson.

I thought if they were ever going to give Hawkins a run in the ruck it would be this week. It will be interesting to see how he goes.

Do you reckon Hawkins needs to be run around in the ruck, given his 18 possession game last week and ability to open up packs for the small forwards.
Could be useful in the heavy going up forward would have thought.
Byrnes should play goals side of Pods and Mooney and he'll have a cracker.

Actually, no I don't. I think Hawkins is unfairly maligned on this site, because he is an easy target. His game last week was excellent, and he's a big boy and only 21. Big guys take longer!!!

I believe with patience, he will develop into a very good KPF, and he should be persisted with. I guess one run in the ruck wont hurt, and will top off his fitness level, but I want to see him back on the forward line next week.

That's what I like about your posts, your're not worried about changing your position after consideration.
I think they've got it right with him, as he is at the moment. HFF.
For me, he's playing a Max Rooke role, ATM, throwing his sizable frame about and creating defence errors. I like him where he is.

Having said that, yeah true! a run in the ruck at some stages of the game might not hurt his involvment, but he's doing OK!
Actually more than just OK.

Hope Travis finds the handle, and grabs his chances to spot up the fwds, especially the Pods and Mooney.

Righto, welcome to the club Farmer2Goggin [ great name ] we can never have to many members.
One of the great rivalries of footy Farmer and Nicholls, and always a highlight of any season seeing them go head to head.

Hang on, how about me, that's the side I predicted [ or wanted ] as well. :D

Seriously though, it makes sense to me having Lonergan ahead of Simpson, with Goodes, White, Bradshaw and possibly Pyke the Swans may go tall up forward at times so having Lonergan as a third tall down back makes sense, plus he can take the second ruck duties against Pyke, which will leave Hawkins to play forward where he should be IMO.

Thanks for the compliment, but I have never been a fan of Hawkins rucking, and I am sure I have never posted that I am.

As for Travis..me too. A little worried about the "second game back" syndrome, but fingers crossed. Should be a crackerjack game...
 
After last weekend Trav's critics wanted to see him perform against quality opposition (and fair enough, too), and today they got what they wanted.

He was absolutely superb when the game was tight early and contributed well throughout the entire match.
His defensive pressure is second to none as is his work ethic, and today he reaped the rewards by kicking 3 goals.

Only had 14 touches but was easily in the best 3-4 on the ground, which speaks volumes for the quality of those disposals and his grunt work, work that doesn't make the stats sheet.
 
When it was there early he was brilliant, and his chasing efforts rock.:thumbsu:

I was on another BF thread last night where a poster was suggesting Duncan was unlucky to be dropped (true) and that maybe Varcoe should make way for him. Hope he's eating his words now. :D

As a somewhat loud and consistent fan of Travis, I have to try and keep a lid on it, but I say again, that this guy is a star...he will be elite!

As for the Cats......bloody hell......a few teams will be looking over their shoulder now. Fantastic.

I agree, in particularly think he is a good complement to Ablett - the two seem to "read" one other really well. I have always thought of Varcs as a small forward who goes into the midfield now and then but the reality is he's much better than that. He can play anywhere.
 
He has arrived.... was excellent again. Looks strong, looks confident, looks able to rip games apart... Watch out for Trav this season. Can't wait to see him alongside Stokesy as well... Boy are we in a strong position this year.
 
Was really looking forwards to seeing how Varcoe went this year and then he got injured. I was very concerned this may be enough to slow his progress down but today he slotted back in beautifully. Nice work Trav.

He was very good last year and just keeps on performing. The term underrated gets thrown around a lot but he doesn't seem to get recognised as one of the better HF/midfield types. Quietly putting together a solid career.
 
Loved this quote in the Herald-Sun this morning.

Varcoe missed the opening five games of the season after breaking his thumb in the final practice match. The setback came after the best pre-season of his life, but the 22 year old says it could be a blessing in disguise on a number of fronts.

"I treated it as six weeks extra pre-season," he said. "I also had to do everything left-handed while I was out. I thought 'If I am going to get anything out of this I can improve my left side', and I actually had a snap on my left foot today which went all right."

I'd be one of those, and I'd say today I got "some" of what I wanted.

Very good early [ two excellent goals ] but just six possessions until three quarter time suggests he still drifts out of the game for lengthy periods, and his eight in the last quarter came when the game was done and dusted.

Tackling and pressure were great, overall another step toward proving me a lousy judge, which of course I hope he does, but I want to see him continue in this manner for a while yet before giving him the final :thumbsu:.
