Getting too little of the pill has always been my great grippe with Trav, however what he gets he's using well.
Love to see more 20 possession games from him though, then he'd be a great player for us, IMO.

How many mids did we have yesterday with big numbers of possessions? Ablett, Chappy, Bartel, Kelly, just for starters. His stats yesterday were perfect for his role. All high quality. If he gets thrown into the midfield, I'm sure his numbers will increase, but right now, he is a superb addition to our team, just what we were lacking, and when he's not with the ball, he sure puts pressure on his opponent, directly and indirectly.
As I've said before, he is THE player we have to sign up for long term, and he will be as important as Ablett. IMO.

Great he is already.

Looks fitter, stronger and more assured. I also loved the left foot goal because at times in the past he has looked a little one sided. I'd just like him to add the 70Metre goal to his bag of tricks.
No matter what he is obviously in our best 22 now. His pace , his vibe , his little bit of magic that he just brings it to our side.Up till now I think he has been nursed along a bit, , I get the feeling his ready to stand on his own feet as a player in our side.

I agree TC. Really like what he has done for himself. He has developed his own game in the off season and looks the better for it. It has helped that he hurt his right hand, so he worked on his left.

Maybe, we should break Byrnes' left hand during the off-season? (Only kidding Eliza!).

I'd be one of those, and I'd say today I got "some" of what I wanted.

Fair call.

Very good early [ two excellent goals ] but just six possessions until three quarter time suggests he still drifts out of the game for lengthy periods, and his eight in the last quarter came when the game was done and dusted.

Possessions aren't necessarily a good judge of Travis' impact, just as they aren't with Max but nonetheless, your point is a valid one.

Many players who fill similar roles to Travis do tend to drift in and out of games and it's also quite common amongst young footballers across the board.
The quality ones tend to find their feet and start contributing four quarter efforts after 60-70 games and a solid run with injury, the bog standard one continue on at that level for their entire career.
I believe time will show that Travis belongs in the first category.

Tackling and pressure were great, overall another step toward proving me a lousy judge, which of course I hope he does, but I want to see him continue in this manner for a while yet before giving him the final :thumbsu:

Again, that's a fair enough call.
He's definitely got to keep improving and string together some quality performances over time before we can truly say he's 'made it', but all the signs are good so far and i'm bloody excited. :D

Had an excellent first quarter (plus a very nice goal) but again drifted out of the game (luckily it wasn't a bad game to drift out of). Only finished with 14 disposals, but every time the ball was in his hands something good happens. Very slick.. almost Ablett-like.

Thoughts on his game tonight?

Same as yours. Looks wonderful with the ball - doesn't find it often enough.

Yep. Great first quarter then drifted out of the game. Needs to be able to play a whole game before he can be considered elite. His disposals are great, seems very strong on ground level and is very fast and ive noticed this year he seems to be doing a lot of support running which is great. Just gotta get the ball in his hands more somehow.

Not a whole lot of stats tonight but probably didn't need to. Stokes and Byrnes got plenty, as did Chappy, Ablett, Enright, Johnson, Selwood and everything Varcoe did was creative and slick. Not all can amass 20+ stats each week.

Great game, if only he could get more of it.

His shepparding was ****ing brilliant tonight. He does so many little things, 1%'s.

He reminds me a bit of Ablett when he was first playing for the Cats. Would show flashes of brilliance when he got the ball as a small forward, but seemed to lack confidence and was always looking to handball to a teammate rather than just go for goal.

I'm not suggesting that Trav can improve as much as Ablett did, but I do think that with even greater fitness and increased confidence, he could develop into an excellent forward/midfielder.

The Big Catfight also put paid to the question of whether we can afford TV, Stokesy & Byrnes in the same team. Used as a tag team they literally give us a Mach 3 forward line, and I thought that both Travis & Matty showed some utterly sublime slick ball disposal skills and superb forward defensive pressure.

Watching the mosquito fleet clicking in to gear like this is one of the many great thrills of this season to date.

Yes, very silky in patches, started brilliantly, but gee! he must have faded.
Wish he was in the game more, at the moment he's a trick pony for me, but looks the goods when he gets it.
Defininately needs more than 14 possessions though.

Not a neat comparison by any means given the different game plan, team-mates, playing in different positions and so on but his statistics aren't remarkably different from Gazza's at the same time in his career (in fact they are very similar indeed). If anything I'd probably rate him slightly in front of Ablett in that he looks more likely carve a team up singlehandedly than Ablett was at that point.

He'll get better, I have no doubt of that.

Interesting line in Mike Sheahan's story:
Varcoe is yet another example of how lucky certain players are to be drafted by good clubs. He now has 58 games under his belt. He didn't deserve many of the first 35, but his form and confidence against the Swans vindicates both his first-round draft status and Thompson's faith in him.I'm tipping he wouldn't be the same self-assured, creative young man at Richmond.

Some truth in that.

He'll never have the power Gaz has. I don't think any player in the AFL has it. I think he could be more like a Mcleod at his best or even a Matera. Even in the early years Gaz was very good in contested ball situations which isn't Varcoe's strength (though he gotten better).

Agree with this too. Think he won't be bad in contested ball when he's fully built though.

If Trav gets near Peter Matera I will be more than happy with that!
