This thread has gone a bit feral. I can't believe anyone would not want Varcoe at his best in the side. The coaches believe they can coax him into that form through showing trust and patience. The carrot over the stick approach.

I think we can all agree that if Varcoe strikes form we are looking hard to beat. I guess we arguing over how likely that would be.

I cant beleive that this thread is still going!!

Honestly guys, why dont we just see how he goes over the next few weeks until we write him off.....

If it is true the injury was worse than I believed - perhaps that is also a factor to be considered. Some players do not handle playing with an injury as well as others.

If true I hope his shoulder gets better as the season progresses - and is fine for the finals.

The problem is though, according to various sources of information, he's either a) completely injury-free, b) still feeling it to a limited extent, or c) carrying an injury still. We just don't know. He looks like it isn't bothering him, because when he has played well this year, he's looked fine.

It's a repeat of the same argument for me, when he's at his best, he's absolutely in our best 22 (and showed good signs against Adelaide). When he's avoiding any kind of physical situation and dodging packs, he's not. That's the sole issue many of us have.

Hopefully he turns it on tomorrow night.

i am not making excuses for trav but who really knows how the shoulder injury has affected him, or if it still does.

i badly rolled my ankle twice playing basketball and i basically stopped driving and leaping during games. even to this day in pick up games i play cautiously. yes he is a professional athlete, but also human, those things would run through the mind.

I will second that!!
I rolled both of mine more than twice playing basketball and its always in the back of your mind if its going to happen again.
Like you I dont play ball anymore, but I do run PT classes and always get a bit nervous when I have to demonstrate or do anything that includes lateral movement.
I know its fully healed and 99% sure it wont happen, but its always the first thing that enters your mind, and I dont see how elite sportsman would be any different!!

Ooh, can I be the first for the day?

Travis Varcoe, blah blah blah whinge moan...... :D

Rip em up tonight Trav and silence the critics!!

His tackle numbers have dropped off remarkably. He has always clearly laid more tackles than the competition average (in bold) until this year.

2007: 3.2 per game (2.4)
2008: 4.5 (2.4)
2009: 3.4 (2.8)
2010: 4.1 (3.1)
2011: 1.9 (3.1)

Perhaps my points are becoming a little repetitive and boring. But I am only interested really about 2 things this season.

1. To win a Premiership and what we need to do to give ourselves the best chance of beating the Pies - who will be there waiting for us I believe in the GF.

2. That we make progress in rejuvenating the team so we remain at the top for another 5 years - to win more Premierships.

I think if this year is to end in a Premiership we need just about everything going our way. Re TV - whether you like it or not - we need him in the team playing really well.

He needs to get a lot of the ball, make a heap of tackles and kick goals. Without that contribution, and improvements from younger players like Menzel, Duncan, Thunt and Bundy - and our mid range players like Mackie, Stokes, TV and Wojo all needing to play their best - we will probably not be successful this year.

Our guns will play well as they always seem to do. Its really about the last 6-8 players and how they go that will be a deciding factor in how we go as a team.

As far as rejuvenating the team for years to come - a fantastic job has been done this year to catch up from not doing this last year. So big tick for the club on that prerequisite.

Big tick for the club getting us into the finals again and to likely finish with a double chance - where you have to be really to win a Premiership from.

Only one big tick to go - and we really wont know about that one for months to come yet.

I enjoy all the banter and info on this Board. Really we just all want the team to win another Premiership, rejuvenate the team and have excellent selections re draft and trading. But we have different opinions about how this will be best achieved.

Most of the time I find myself in the middle not at the extremes of the discussions. And in the case of Varcoe I can see why quite a few see so much in him - and I can also see that after making steps forward last season - expectations grew that he has failed thus far to deliver on.

Is it injury ? He is not as good as many suggest here ? He is still growing into the game and will get better ? He is only an outside player and will never be a gun consistent player for us like Chapman, Bartel, Enright or Corey ?

I can see all sides of the discussions - and am no better for it really.

I thought too many called last year's TV season a 'break out year' - it was premature. However those who call for his head may also be premature.

It took a long time for us to find out poor Tenace was never going to make it. It took a long time for us to realise just how important Rooke would be to our team.

I think we will only know the answer to these questions next season.

A confidence thing with the shoulder perhaps?

It cannot possibly be a confidence thing with the shoulder.
He has laid bone jarring tackles this year.

It was interesting that there was a comment from Balme (or someone) that he was off to Perth for a freshen up. But there was also mention of personal issues.

Still with his fiancee?
I know there is a poster on here who doesn't like personal stuff coming up but it's the sort of personal problem that can remove your appetite for everything.

If that's the case, this is a coaching issue.

I still maintain that if he continues to not contribute like he should with regards to 1%'s/tackling etc, he should see some VFL footy. A player in his 5th year knows exactly what is expected and continuing to pick him in the seniors may not be the best thing for HIM and the club moving forward towards finals. A little scare could be good for him... still plenty of time before finals arrive.

Either way, I'd be happier to seem him attack the ball and tackle hard without kicking a goal tonight rather than a sea-gulling effort out the back of stoppages all night and kick 2-3 goals. Especially if its a tightly fought contest. The goals will come either way if Varcoe gets to more contests and lifts his intensity.

Never anything said about personal issues.

"He's got a few things that he needs to work on and we felt it was a good opportunity to freshen him up
Mentally it's a long season and it's very challenging for these players to get up week after week, so this will give him a breather and let him get over a few niggles and sore spots and set him up for the second half of the season," Balme said.
"The stuff we want them to do in the program isn't just training and kicking a footy around. There's gym stuff and a few other things (in there as well)."

VC's on the money I seen it somewhere too
Where though? Another post on BigFooty?

I'd say it would be the shoulder. I know a current player from another side who has done his shoulder this year and apparently has lost of confidence as a result.

Yep!! :D:thumbsu:

My only gripp with Varcoe, and still is, is his lack of possessions, with the exception of that last game against the Crows.
One game was six and most others not much more, how long do you wait?

I agree, last game earned him a reprive, but better 'do something' tonight!
