An issue?
Some pretty low percentages this year, including 29% on Fri night.
Love how he goes about it, but concerned he's not quite as 'silky' as we think?
Happy to be proven wrong....

I agree and i'e felt this way since last year. Not that big a deal, neither is Chris Judd's (these days anyway). Although i do believe that we need another "silky" midfielder, hopefully someone like Bennell.

deledio had our best kicking and vision in the midfield until he got moved into the backline.

noticed cotch hasn't been efficient but it will improve and he often makes up for it with other things

It's probably because he's always so closely checked. In his first season we were winning games and he was only a first year player, so he had plenty of room to move in. Recently he cops tags and wins 70% of his posession in tight with no obvious player to dish to so he has to hurry a kick away. The last time he got any kind of genuine room to move would have been vs Essendon last year and his disposal was great. As he gets fitter, his hips recover, and the players around him get better, he'll be able to get free more often to a place where he can use his skills.

Also most of the time he kicks it it's to a marking contest inside 50 and we know how hard it is for us to take a mark in there (let alone around the ground) so that would have a big impact in itself.

He is doing a lot of clearance work, in and under type stuff, and doing a bit of the hack it forward type kicks. That is his role for now and he is learning the art at this level, whilst being tagged, and at the ripe old age of 19/20.

He is at his "silky" best when moving the ball through traffic in play, one on one contested situations, or in when in the clear.

Nothing to be concerned about in my eyes.

I think it is the perfect time to move Lids back into the midfield. I love him at HBF however Cotch and Martin are getting checked closely these days letting Cousins off the hook I think a few teams will not throw a tagger on Lids or at least not there best and even if they do it lets Cotch run free.

We need an outside mid but we have Lids who is a superstar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would be more concerned if he was doing the same this time next year. Early in the year he lacked penetration but i think he is getting better.
I think after a full preseason under his belt he should be fine.

Irrelevant and meaningless stat.

Most of his disposals are kicks/handballs out of congestion. Obviously they aren't going to efficient most the time, but they are certainly effective.

His kicking is great when he has time to compose himself, unfortunately we haven't seen much of this because he has been playing predominately inside through the absence of Foley, Jackson and Lids.

Doesn't have the fitness (yet) to get himself into space and get cheap kicks and hits targets. Hardly ever gets a touch without someone hanging off him.

Lack of fitness also means he's fatigued a lot of the time when he does get it. That doesn't help hitting targets either.

He'll be fine but we still need outside mids to help.

Too bad we can't bump old threads, because this one would, along with some other Cotchin-questioning/bagging comedy gold posted here recently, be yet another keeper to be laughed at in years to come.

So to op pumpkinhead - if you indeed are "happy to be proven wrong", then I suggest you'll be in ****ing raptures for many years to come.:thumbsu:

Eff is an interesting stat. This year we have played 37 players and Cotch ranks 30 on that list. Yet, Thustfield No.1, McGuane No.2 and Moore No5 are three players who are routinely criticised here for their ball usage. Even Jake King has a better Eff% than Cotch.

If you look at the Eff stats of all the hard at it inside players from all clubs, the majority have low percentages. Thats why i have always been puzzled by the criticism Tuck gets. For someone who is so in and under like a bull at a gate, his 69.80 is very healthy.

But i do agree with the OP. Cotch`s 17 disp game, with 29% Eff was very strange, especially when so many rated it.

Most of his kicks were from a clearance to a contest where most of the time the saints won the ball, he only made 3 clangers that game, and also had Jones as a tagger on him i think. I wouldnt be too worried about it.

Couldn't have said it better myself. A lot of the kicks (I would assume) are ineffective rather than clangers. Don't know if it's an instruction from Hardwick or just Cotchin doing what he thinks is best. The only concern I have which really isn't a big one is that he is great in the contest and I would like to see him give it off more to players running by or even back himself and try and shrug the tackle, rather than just banging it forward.

This isnt having a dig at the cotch, but its interesting that we are excusing his efficiency as he "has to dig it out" and "hack it forward" and "do the hard stuff"

Sure sounds like what tucky has had to do the majority of his career and he has been labeled a turnover king.

Both cotch and tuck are in our best 22 so its about time some on here took of their sunnies and looked at each players contribution.!!!!!!!!!

It's because he has a lack of support with solid bodies around to block and sheperd and it especially stood out with no Foley or Jackson in the team at a track like Etihad.

I also prefer to watch the game to make up my own mind than rely on an isolated efficiency stat and try and make a inference out of it, especially when it's only over 1 game.

It's not an issue.

kicking "efficiency" is an over rated stat and probably needs to be redefined. Clangers are more black and white with regards to bad disposal

This just about torpedoes all discussion on the use of just stats to draw conclusions about players effectiveness...

Trent Cotchin has excellent skills.

As Richmond supporters we have things to be worried about

Let me assure you Trent Cotchins Disposal in not one of them

Beautiful User of the ball and the only reason his efficieny is so low is because of his clearance work FULLSTOP

Putting Tuck in the same league as Cotchin is laughable...like comparing Preston North End to Chelsea....in 6 years Tuck has never shown even a glimpse of the class and skill Cotchin has shown at least a few times in every game -even the few ordinary ones- he's played...but then most people who can watch a game of footy without constantly "referring to their notes" don't need to be told that...they can see it with their own eyes...but as I said, time will show the doubters for the fools they are, if it hasn't already...

Christ, only at Richmond would we have supporters running down a sheer talent like Cotchin in order to put some mediocre plodder with questionable skills in a more favourable light....I think having a player of Cotchin's ability wearing the yellow and black must be some kind of culture shock for some people used to spending year after year gallantly defending mediocrity and they don't quite know how to handle seeing a bonafide superstar in our colours...
