Roast Trevor Nisbett & the media

As a club we've had our backs up against the wall again. One of our own has made a bad mistake, the injuries to Brayshaw are horrific (I completely believe Gaff's version of events) and the media have been feral with their attacks. So feral that Melbourne Airport decided to whisk Gaff off the tarmac with a police escort to protect him and the regular folk from the media, much to the disbelief of that very same media.

The health and well being of both Andrew's has taken a back seat to the click bait media frenzied outrage. Put your hand up if you're surprised.

Mark Brayshaw seems like a very level headed man, shows how crazy the media have become that the victims father is already asking for Gaffs forgiveness.

I thought the club made the right decision on Monday to call a press conference.
I feel Trevor Nisbett came up short in shutting up the media and instead gave them more opportunities to heap on us. Nisbett has a strong desire to control the messaging when people are talking about the club, which I understand but sometimes you can't reason with the pack and this was one of those times. The visuals of young Brayshaw meant that everyone was out for blood. The sad thing is that if this was 'just' a concussion, the response from the media would have been more measured. It's the crazy world we live in.

Given Nisbetts previous commentary around off the ball punches something along the lines of "Our thoughts are with the Brayshaws. Gaff is devastated at what has happened and takes full responsibility for his actions. Even though he did not intend to strike Andrew in the face, he and the club acknowledge that throwing any sort of a punch can have devastating unintended consequences and for that we are sorry to the Brayshaw family and the FFC. We would ask the media to respect both the Gaff's and the Brayshaws and the AFL tribunal process and refrain from the headline grabbing frenzy and commentary that has accompanied this story. It is not helpful for either of the young men involved in the incident. Andrew has requested to make a statement later in the week after the AFL tribunal process to apologies."

Take responsibility, shut them up and move on. It's hard with his character being attacked but the more we defend the more they attack.

Thankfully it looks like golf gate hasn't taken off but just what an unnecessary thing to say. RTB Lyon is an A grade a**hole but why stoop to his level. At the end of the day he'd seen Brayshaw in that state and that would have been hard.
We should have been using this opportunity to stamp more violence out of the AFL and shame the media, who have proven yet again are just a bunch of self-serving twats.

IMO Simmo has handled himself much better as he continues to play a straight bat.

Thankfully, with the tribunal over we get closer to a new week of football for people to focus on.

Wishing Andrew Brayshaw all the best with his recovery as well as Gaff on his road to redemption.

Or maybe you all disagree with me, in which case mods just delete the thread.

I personally think the Nisbett "stuff up" has been overstated. It wasn't ideal, but I d personally don't think he was as bad as some others have said.
Everything throughout those 2.5 days has been overstated.
But my issues with Nisbett were that unlike Gaff - whose stuff-up was completely uncharacteristic - his were kind of par for the course. He just comes off to me as being disingenuous, and for me personally that's a turn-off in a leader. It's not that anything he did or said was awful in isolation, but I expect better. He didn't help, and he should have.

Yeah, as I've said in another thread the reporting of the press conference started out emphasising the apology to Brayshaw (which was the whole point of the presser), then changed overnight to attack Nisbett for his comments on Lyon and failure to take questions. That's just Seven West driving the narrative that suits their agenda. Although Nisbett was a bit too lax in giving them the ammunition.

The golf thing needs to be clarified, even if it's as simple as "Mark Brayshaw/Hamish Brayshaw/Robert Wohpol told me the three of them played golf, or I thought that's what they said, and I just took that at face value, if it wasn't true I'm sorry".

Yeah, clearly that was just some mis-communication, or confusion.

Got totally overblown.

I obviously have a different opinion to others, but I though at the time that he handled himself ok at the presser on Monday. Having said that, the golf game comment was a complete stuff up.

Not really.

When you make a statement thats intending to highlight someone else's inaccuracies and then make one yourself , you look pretty silly and give your detractors a good bit of ammo to fire back at you.

For what its worth I thought Nisbett's first half on the interview was good , strong and measured.
The second half , not so, the longer it went the more he flapped about.

That said it is in many ways a no win situation.
Make a comment and that in itself draws counter comment and scrutiny.
Say nothing and it looks naff.

Damed if you do ........... damed if you don't.

Nisbett has been a great servant of the Club ,but, as I have posted in numerous other threads IMO he has well passed his use by date and should gracefully move on.

Just my two bobs worth.

I don't disagree with pretty much anything you've said. The overblown comment was in regard to the fact that as you said, he was in a no-win position. I thought his intent was good and he got tripped up on some detail and in trying to defend his people.

I tend to agree it's time to move on from Nisbett, and that's not really a reflection on him, rater that I've seen in the corporate world that every CEO has a period of time where they become less effective - new ideas are important. That being said, the club refresh that has come over the past couple of years has been a welcome change with new home ground, new jumpers and logos, and new training base soon. Marks a perfect time to hand a legacy on IMO.

I have a strong sense he will move on after the new training facilities are built [citation needed] ;)

Yep, move Nisbett on. Let the club become shambles. You are all way, way out of your league.

One thing I will say about Nisbett is having a few friends working inside the club, internally he is rated massively.

One of his strongest traits is that he is very down to earth for a high level executive and has a lot of time for all of the staff.

CEOs often have a short tenure so he is obviously doing a lot right

There is a lot to be said about his length of tenure. You don't last long in any industry if you are an authoritarian a-hole. I just think it might be time for some new ideas but I would still be ok with him continuing on.

Nah fair call I guess I was more pointing out that even really good CEOs sometimes only last 3-4 years before moving on.

The fact he has been at the club as long as he has is obviously testament to how much respect he has from within

I think it was S Mitchell that commented on the culture at the club when he came over saying that its rare to have a CEO that has stayed on for so long, so we must be doing something right. We are arrogantly successful, there Basil use that you campaigner.

I was off work sick on Monday so watched the interview live.

The media’s questions were so inflammatory, to be honest I don’t think there was much else Nisbett could have done (excepting the golf story.... obviously got bad intel there).

The intel was rotten but the intent and message were solid. Don't think it was bad as people are making out though but its still more ammo for the mouth breathers.

not sure if it should be mentioned elsewhere but Karl and Hase mentioned it on their show the other night that there's actually quite a lot of tense and heated discussions been going on between the two Perth clubs for quite some time, involving all things from royalties to WAFC, Derby medal, WAFL reserves and general admin s**t.

Be that as it may.

Having worked in the Corporate World for over 30 years, at various levels , its my observation and opinion that the most dynamic and successful organisations have a CEO who's tenure lasts no more 6-8 years.

The better organisations IMO have a succession plan that is unfolded in the last two years to 18 months of a CEO's tenure.

The one common denominator that all Great Organisation share is that they have a strong, stable , unified and clear visioned Board.

A CEO should reflect and be in step with the Board , he or she is the Boards Foot Soldier and Action Agent.

Every CEO has different strengths and weaknesses and its imperative that new fresh ideas come through the door every couple of years , be that bringing in vibrant underlings or appointing a new CEO every 6-8 years ( preferably both ).
Organisations just like people get stale if they are not challenged , extended and developed and if this is not part of the organisations organic growth, then they lose some of their potential effectiveness.

West Coast have a ideal hand over period in that Trevor can finish off the project of overseeing the completion on the new facilities that will be our HQ.
But a new set of eyes and ears are needed to take the Club forward.
These two things can be done simultaneously.

The Club should be about Worlds Best Practices and a Search for Excellence in leadership, governance and strategic planning.
