Talking earlier this week about big goalkickers in country football, a mention was made of a Trevor Sutton who apparently had some large tallies in the Murray league. Anyone got any knowledge or details of this bloke?

Re: Murray League - Sutton

Superboot a Ram favorite

Taken from Deniliquin Pastoral Times, May 1999.

HE may have been the ultimate headache for opposition defenders but for Deniliquin Football Club supporters Trevor Sutton was an adopted favorite. He came to Deniliquin in 1981 with a big reputation and he left two years later with a swag of goals and a bag of records.
Recruited from Brisbane where he played for two seasons, Sutton was a football mercenary, playing everywhere from country Western Australia, Footscray, Norwood and in Darwin during the off season.

The first player to kick 100 goals in the Darwin competition, he repeated the feat in his first year at the Hardinge St Oval booting 121 majors in 1981.

It was an impressive first season for the spring heeled forward but nothing could prepare fans for the goalkicking show he put on the following year.

Playing as a permanent full forward Sutton started the season without fuss, kicking 80 goals as Deniliquin lost its opening match to Numurkah.

Another eight goals the following week gave him a comfortable lead on the goalkicking ladder and 13 majors in round three wet the appetite of Rams fans.

By round five he had an amazing 61 goals on the board including an MFL record 24 against Coleambally while wearing a pair of running shoes.

In round nine he had posted his centry of goals, the quickest of any major league player and the records continued to tumble.

A 17 goal haul against Strathmerton in round 17 helped him pass the magical 200 mark and the following week he added 11 to pass the 48 year Australian record of 220 goals in a season.

By the time Deniliquin bowed out of the finals race in the preliminary final, Sutton had booted 249 goals.

It was an amazing year from the coach and one which will be forever remembered in the minds of Rams' fans.

Saw him play years ago in the Mid Murray, the bloke could seriously play. I think he still holds a s***load of goalkicking records in a heap of leagues.

A couple of years ago they actually did a story about him on one of the local radio stations. He played for a mountain of years at an unbelievable amount of clubs around the state. I have a mate who used to play at Strathmerton who reckons they played against him 5 times in 2 years and on each occasion Sutton kicked over 20 goals! Apparently he was a boxer and just a real powerfully built bloke. But surprisingly, like a lot of champion country footballers, couldn't make it at league level...

What about the kid from Cobram this year in the U14s? 119 so far I think. Jake Hoolahan's his name.

He worked with my Sister during his time at Deni. We were only talking about him the other day as the Herald Sunday Sun mentioned his 249 goals were still an Australian record.

I remember he used to take a mark in front of goal and just walk back towards the other goals and kick the ball over his head for a goal. Whilst the locals gasped at his greatness in front of goal I remember a lot thought he was a bit of a smarty doing that sort of stuff.

Would've been great to get to the granny so he could crack the magical 250 though.

Rod Tregenza from South Mandurah in WA's Peel Football League kicked 10 in the Grand Final for a season's tally of 238.

He was well on track to break Sutton's record after having 217 after Round 17, but didn't fare too well in Rnds 18 and the 2nd Semi Final - hauls of only 5 and 6 giving a combined total of 11.

Tregenza kicked at least four twenties from memory, including 43 in the last two weekends against the bottom two sides (21 v Mandurah and 22 v Harvey). He had 99 after 8 matches.

His previous highest was 197 in 2006 and 168 was his previous highest before that - don't know his 2007 tally (was 112 with one H&A round to go).

He has received a bit of stick here for playing below his level, though it is unjustified to a degree. He lives in Mandurah and played with Peel Thunder and East Fremantle, as well as South Adelaide and a rookie at North Melbourne. But he lives and works in the area and grew sick of the travelling involved at WAFL level (round trips of about 90km to the nearest opponents and up to 170km for the longest).

By the way, South Mandurah beat Mundijong Centrals by a lazy 23 goals in a surprising result (margin-wise).

No that was Simon Tregenza

The year Sutton kicked 249 he would have kicked just as many behinds and out on the full... was a ball hog and was known for dragging players if they didn't pass it to him

The story about him playing for footscray is false... he claims to have played for footscray but his name isn't in the AFL encyclopedia of every player to have played a game and blokes that were at whitten oval when he claimed to have played never recall a bloke by the name of trevor sutton playing there

the best story about him at deni was the one where he was put in hospital because he was concussed playing footy or knocked out or something... he discharged himself on a saturday before a game and kicked 12 goals against a side (can't remember who) that afternoon
