I didn't think he got a fair go at the Bombers, however he has not improved from what i saw of him on the ABC playing VFL, is still only young and could improve, but the general consensus is that he won't.

the main problem with Cartledge he is cant handle contested situations..eg ruck and especially around the ground..has anyone ever seen him take a contested mark?

Cartledge was taken by us when he was 17, as a long term prospect. Despite his height, he never seemed to be able to get his hand on the ball to palm it down to his rovers. I can't recall seeing any young ruck hopeful so completely at sea when it came to the centre bounce knock as Tristan.
He always seemed to jump way too early, and never ever learned to time the balls ups at all.
The writing was on the wall when Henneman was preferred in the ruck to him, and later Ryder. Last year Hawthorn invited Carts to train with them pre-season, but decided against picking him up. He missed out on being drafted by anyone that year.
Perhaps he is ready to take that next big step now, but as he didn't exactly dominate playing for North Ballarat last season, I don't hold out much hope.
Let's hope he has learned to time his run ups at centre and around the ground ball-ups better - at the very least.

Didn't someone else give him a chance also? Hawthorn was it? I might be wrong.

I think he did pre-season with the hawks last year. Ant or Longy can confirm this.

Still think Ash Eames was worth a crack, despite his age. Another topic for another day.....

Having just read the post before my last, it answered my qyuestion. Trained with Hawks but they did not pick him up.:thumbsu:

My Info on Cartledge:

He is mainly a ruckman and can also play forward, played VFL for the Roosters and mainly played Ruck but gets worn out very easily, he plays forward maby for a quarter or so every game and is a real danger there but is too slow and isn't well balanced at all, he can make a good lead but he is really one of those guys at the back of the pack trying his luck in getting the ball, his main asset is his body stature, he's tall, big and can take a good mark.

His downsides can sometimes be his accuracy of kicking, its hard for him to run out the whole game let alone a quarter, he also "hog's" it too much and doesn't pass it off enough and turns it over alot.

Hope this helped, he'll be an asset for VFL but AFL he'll really struggle alot like he did with us.
So he's a danger up forward but isn't very good there?
He's one of those ruckmen who's really a ruckman. More Peter Street than Justin Koschitzke.

Saw the bloke play a few decent to good VFL games, that's probably his level. Might be a late bloomer & he's certainly got the height & leap to ruck but won't be winning any brownlows soon

As the OP said, better than having a 6'2" flanker rucking, but not by much

If all goes well for Richmond in terms of injuries, we won't have to use him.
He is probably about the 4th ruck choice, just like he was at Essendon.
