But how is it the Victorian Football League when there is a team from Western Australia? Bayer's point is valid, its simply a name change by technicality.

All others are entirely irrelevant.

Seems to be a logjam around the number 2, a couple of impressive clubs with 3, and one standout with 4.

..actually if you're simply basing it on non-vic teams being involved, it went 'national' in '82 with swans relocating to sydney..

So a name change means a huge difference does it, David? I guess you only recognise Max Rooke's contribution to your club 2007-2010? There's no difference between 1989 VFL and 1990 AFL, and if you can't see that, you're a moron.

Actually, it was West Coast and Brisbane that started in 1987. The same number of clubs were around in 1990 with the name change to AFL.

My point is not that flags start counting when those two interstate teams started in 87 - my point is that Collingwood w***ers claiming 1990 as the beginning of the modern era is complete bullshit, as there is no substance to it.

But you two please keep on letting your hatred of Hawthorn blind you from the Collingwood stupidity. :)

This is Bay 13...I didn't think it was a forum for sensible debate. Nevertheless.........

I don't recall stating that there was a huge difference between VFL Premierships and AFL Premierships and I certainly don't believe that Premierships before 1990 were worth " diddley squat" as Didak put it. But AFL Premierships started in 1990 ... didn't they? Just a name change yes...but a change all the same. IT's now an AFL Premiership Cup and they began to be handed out in 1990. That doesn't demean the achievements of teams before that date....you can only beat the opponents put in front of you.

My circle jerk comment relates to the following...

I am a " here and now" type of bloke and while I got a kick out of 2007 and 2009 I don't rely on past performance as proof of present greatness. I find those that indulge in that to be involved in a bit of a wank to be honest. It's just not my scene. Hence my comment. I prefer to comment and assess more on the present...
