Mmmmm... I managed to spare a thought for the poor lad when I was in Thailand in January this year (already feels like an eternity ago). One thing I noticed straight away with the three major beaches in Phuket (Patong, Karon and Kata) is that they're very wide. Probably not so much Patong, but the other two take ages to get from the water's edge to the very back of the beach.

It's not like St Kilda where if you see something coming you can quickly jump up and be on the boulevard walkway within seconds. Out there there's absolutely nothing to grab hold of if you had minimal warning.

That's a pretty scary thought:eek: I've always imagined what it would be like if it happened here and I've imagine the beaches there to be like St Kilda where you can be at the waters edge but get to the bottom of Chapel in a matter of seconds. Scary to think my brothers on Phi Phi Island as we speak,

I was in Pattaya Thailand at the time and every one was in a state of shock thinking that it could just as easily been them.
Life is too short so make the most of every day.

Phi Phi's kind of sheltered, so nothing would really happen there unless an earthquake occured in the bay directly south or north of it. Beaches are normal width, although the town is very low lying. Any tsunami could go through one bay and end up in the other. :S

Isn't Pattaya on the other side of the Malay Peninsula?
150km S/E of Bangkok. In the bay there, and protected, but a lot of holidayer goers were probably coming back from the Phuket region or planned on going there next. I'd be shitting myself if I were in the country and only being a few days off my schedule from being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I still remember being out at a bar and seeing the news flash across the bottom of the screen on chan 7 I think, couldn't believe what i saw so i quickly sms'd a mate of mine who was playing at Melbourne at the time and got a reply about a minute later confirming it... felt absolutely numb for ages and even attended the Ess V Melb rd 1 match 2005 - spine tingling stuff that was!

We drove through Ankara the night before the earthquake in 1999. Initially we planned to spend a couple of days there but our plans changed at the last minute because we couldn't get a flight out of Turkey on the date we wanted.

Don't know if it was divine intervention or what but we were bloody lucky.

Still thinking of Troy. An absolute tragedy to lose someone so young at a time that was meant to be one of the happiest times of his life.

I hope Colin Garland can get back out on the park next year and do the #20 proud.

Ah yes, the "OMFG, I had been there a month later and a staying at a different hotel.." reaction.

Yeah there's a few incredible stories floating around with S11. Ian Thorpe apparently left his hotel to visit the building, realised he forgot his camera, walked all the way back and decided to turn on the tv while he got himself a drink or something, saw breaking news about the WTC attacks, looked out the window of his hotel and thought "you've got the be kidding".

I believe a group of Bulldog players (can't remember whether they were AFL or NRL) were also meant to go up but decided to ditch it for a BBQ.

There was one funny story to come out of it, a guy was cheating on his wife and he also happened to work high up in one of the world trade centres. On the morning of the attack he'd decided to go in late to work and go see his mistress instead, after the planes hit his wife calls him frantically to see if he's ok and he says no i'm fine, i'm just sitting at my desk working at the moment. Needless to say his wife put 2 and 2 together pretty fast.

Ummm....

Troy Broadbridge was in Phi Phi and was not in Phuket if a wave that size hits the beach you are on you need to run further than the edge of the sand.

Surprised Phi Phi got hit, but it does stick out of that little bay a bit. Perhaps not sheltered enough.

As for the comment about the beach, of course you need to be on higher ground and not just the edge of the sane. I was just emphasising how long it takes merely to reach the back of the beach let alone find cover.
