Dunno...perhaps he could use his knee injury as an excuse and say he can only see a local specialist over the coming years so if you draft me, be prepared for me to fly to Melbourne every couple of months as part of the rehab :)

Yeah because no interstate teams have ever had to rehab a knee injury at their locally available facilities before...

Why I think we will get Menzel
Looking at the teams above us, all of them need players to develop quickly (either have a shot at finals soon or need their club to turn around quickly. None have the real luxury we have. If they draft him, and he gets injured then they have fallen one year behind. Also with Tippet going into the draft, GWS will probably take him, which opens up one more Mid to be taken by someone else. Hope it works out.

Emma Quayle said he's likely to go to GWS at pick 3. I'm afraid your mob's only chance of getting him will be in 2 years time when he comes out of contract.

Also there was talk about Daniel possibly wanting to go back home. Interstate clubs may avoid him on the fear he may want to go home someday (especially a first round pick), but port Adelaide are in enough trouble they can't risk on a player who can get injured. I remember reading. If you want your club to break even you need to get 2 picks right. To move forward you need 3. (lucky we have had a fair few already)

Hopefully that was just injury blues talking - if it is even true.

Such a pity he didn't get to play in the 2011 GF. Had he done so, I reckon he would have been a Cat for life.

Still, we have him on a multi-year contract and, hopefully, with some good football under his belt and, even more hopefully, his little brother at the club, Denzel will play 200 games for the Cats.

Was there anyone other than Lloyd who wrote that Dan wanted to go home to South Aus? I know he was the person who suggested it and was throwing around suggestions that he would be used in a trade to get Dangerfied to the Cats but can't remember if any other reporter ran with it.

One thing I remember from around that time, leading up to Dan's return and the announcement of his re-signing was one of the articles after he re-signed he spoke about how he just purchased his first house and it gave a rough time of how many weeks prior he had done so - basing things on that article he had purchased a house in Geelong about 2 or 3 weeks prior to Lloyds article about Dan wanting to return home.

It may just be me, but if the guy was looking at returning home would he have gone out and purchased a house in Geelong prior to signing a new contract because that seems to show some intention of wanting to stay as it would still have been a decent outlay for a player who was still only on their 1st contract at the time.

Dan isn't going anywhere, at least not for a few years, he loves the club.
What would happen if troy came out and said something like "I only want to go to geelong, if anyone else picks me up ill be leaving after 2 years"?

The big boys from other clubs and the AFL would put the frighteners on him and threaten him with disqualification for draft tampering.
He would have to be a bit more subtle.

Yeah fair point Fred. Wish it was that simple though :)
Also again on Daniel, I think he will be a cat for life, you speak to him and you can see the love for the club and his team mates. He's very close to a few at the club, particularly the boys from the same draft.
Also the club loves The Menz just as much.
Duncan Bundy and Menz will be future superstars of this club, none of them will leave.

What if Troy slides to us, but Wells doesn't pick him?
Horror scenario. For me, it would be like finding out that Santa Claus ran over your dog, and crapped in your stocking!

I wouldn't stress too much. As good as our drafting has been overall, we've still made howlers. Look at the early picks from 1999 or even 2001 for evidence (Ezra Bray and Daniel Foster before Chapman, Charlie Gardiner before Steve Johnson).

that's a long time ago. The last 5 -8 years are more relevent to todays team

Not sure on what pick he will go at but the second part of what you say I think is likely to be the case.
Geelong showed an effort to get Varcoe's brother to play alongside him. Whilst that only required a rookie spot and this would require a first rounder and probably change to get Troy, I think we would try for sure in 2 yrs.

Back to the present and of course it's a very long shot he would fall to us in the draft, it would possibly mean reports on his knees are worse than whats been publicised, but if GWS does indeed need to take Tippett with an early pick and Melbourne lose pick 4, there is some really good other talent in that top bracket this year.

Wells has been fantastic for us for years, even all the selections he made back in the 90's - we had a farking good list even back then - that perhaps wasn't coached to its full potential.
You have to remember that once Wells selects or trades for the players what happens from there is out of his hands.

We have just been very lucky that in the last decade or so we have had the developmental & coaching team to be able to capitalise on what he has picked up for us.

Whatever he picks up at the draft table I am sure our coaching & development staff will get the best out of them!!

And really, everyone passed on Chappy & Johnno before we picked them up.
No one could have forseen the value we have got out of those two gems!!

Gee, if we have all the youngsters primed & ready to come on in 2 years & can sacrifice a first rounder to get a player with his talent & 2 years of AFL footy - id be all for that!!

We could see a throwback to our 07/08 dominance!!

Didn't Emma say he is a top 3 talent but will likely fall a bit but will not get past GWS at 12?

To pick his brother up I believe :thumbsu:

On the second point I think we've already broken even this trade period if things turn out ok. ND will be the cream on top.

I was pretty keen on us picking up Scott Selwood in the 07 draft. Similar factors at play. We had a pick in the late teens and passed him over with WC taking him early twenties.

The boy we did take has turned out ok all the same. IWWT.

Christ he must be one hell of a player, if he is going at 3 with all the injuries he has had.

Looking forward to seeing the lad play, wherever he ends up.

Hang on, is he going at 3?

I cant see it.
I genuinely think he will go 10-16 (because if hes still there I really believe we will pick him up).
On talent alone hes a top 5 or 6 but I dont think top 3, add on the injuries and thats a HUGE gamble.
