I'd take the risk and pick him no matter what despite his knee issues.

Not often a team in our position can get a chance to pick up such a terrific talent with one of our picks...considering our success and all over the past 5 years.
You often hear of players who have suspect injuries and seem to turn out alright.

Our best chance to get him now all because of this injury setback but I still reckon other clubs will think alike and take him before us

It is a tough one isn't it? With no injuries the kid would have been in the top 10, I've got no doubt about that. The fact that he has a LARS knee means that the likelihood of him not needing more surgery on that knee is slim at best. No doubt his other knee will be sorted and should be right from mid next year to have a full Pre-season and hit the ground running in 2014 with whoever drafts him. I still think he might slip down a bit because of all of this though as all the clubs who need players to develop fast (bottom 10 mainly) will not want to bank an asset and wait, they will prefer a player who can start sooner rather than later, and in this case Troy will already be a year behind.

The biggest question is whether we absolutely need him that badly that we would not only use our first pick to draft him, we'd be drafting an injury prone forward when we have so many options already in the forward line. I'm not for a second suggesting we wouldn't be able to find room for a player of his calibre, but when you think about it we already have his brother, Kersten to come in next year, Pods and Chappy for at least another year, Stevie J who has hopefully another 4 years left in him, Tommahawk for another 8-9 years and other guys who can push forward when required. Given a choice regardless of Troy's physical durability, I would rather draft a tough inside mid with our first rounder, then wait and hope with everything crossed that Troy drops to whatever our second round pick is.

I can't see him slipping that far unless his recent injury turns out worse than first feared.
Your guess is as good as mine though but I'd reckon high teens as scouts would have monitored his progress this season and from all reports, he's been very impressive.

It's all falling into place. Take Caddy with our Ablett pick, draft a skillful inside mid with our first rounder and take Menzel2 with our second rounder.

Imagine both Menzel brothers with Tommy and Kersten. It will be like having the Jarman's, Plugga and Pavlich in the one forward line. Glorious stuff.

He'll go outside 15, there's enough talents in the top 20 that are good enough in ability, not as good as him, but still very good, but without the risks that he'll get that far. Once you get to the 20's and beyond and the picks are lower someone will take a risk on him.

I tend to agree with Jester on this one, we've got an ageing list and other bigger needs to address and we really need to get a quality mid with our first pick. If they want Troy it wouldn't be a bad idea to try and trade our 2nd rounder up the order a bit, so we've still got a good look at him without having to use our first pick.

Which probably makes it better. Let's face it, three Menzel knees have gone to you-know-what, the fourth was always going to pop at some point.

The real question is when another club will take him - top twenty picks are precious and there's no point using one if no one else will take him before later rounds.

I would have thought the real question is have the knee ops strengthened their knees? Obviously the chances of a first injury were much higher than the average player, but what about the chances of a second injury? One doesn't necessarily lead to the other. It's Bradshaw's call now.
 
I wonder if he will go LARS for the second knee then?
Does anyone have LARS in both knees that we know of?
I know Malcheski has had 2 ops but I think that was the same knee.

Talk of using our first RD pick on a kid that has had 2 knee reco"s is ludicrous.
Getting Menzel's brother over is appealing for several reasons but reality must come first, too big a risk!!
In all likely hood we will have 3 picks at most in ND.Pick 15 will get us a very talented kid with no injury concerns.
 
We shouldn't be too worried about the whole "injury concern" stuff. It seems to me that plenty of players that slide in the draft due to injury concerns end up being fine (Selwood and Judd for example). There's also just as much chance that a guy with no previous injuries getting hit by them.

We need to remember that knee reconstructions are much better now than they once were. There was talk about D Menzel that his knees after the reconstructions would be far stronger than they were beforehand and that reconstructed knees are now normally better than most people without having reconstructions. If he's going to slip down in to the mid 20s then I'd definitely pick him up because he's been rated as closer to the top 5 when fit. It's pretty rare to get such a talent that cheap.

The question is how to get a pick there. Our 2nd round pick is about 35 right? We could probably somehow upgrade that to about 30 by giving up Gillies but I doubt we could go much higher. It would be ideal if somehow Menzel could slip down to that pick but it seems unlikely. Otherwise it might require giving up Simpson who might want out. Not sure I like that though because I really rate the big bloke.

Go with your heart, get him at 15 no probs and look forward to two Menzels wreaking havoc in a few years

Go with your head, hold your nerve that he's a chance to slip to second round, or even get him in a few years if things go pear shaped again for him.

Surely got the inside running with his brother on board, maybe the boy can let on its even worse than it is in the hope he slides to our second pick.

Hopefuly we give up our 1st pick in the draft and our ablett compo pick for a GWS mini draft choice.
Then pick Menzel with our second pick.
Both players would then be ready to go for 2014.

Kind of what I was thinking too. He wouldn't be that far behind in reality. He'll miss his first preseason, but atleast now his knee will be stronger than it was before the injury.
