How were Joel Selwood's injuries looked at pre-draft? Did he not drop from top 5 (or higher) to where we got him at 7 because of the medical reports every club's recruiting team must have read through?

Selwood would have gone number 1 IMO.
Was a brilliant 16 year old, clearly the best in the land at the time.

Did Selwood go through what a couple of blokes went through this year, where they didn't just read their reports, they had them lying on a table with a room full of club doctors poking and prodding and interrogating them?

I don't know, to be honest. Stevie J was offered up at the end of 2006, but Collingwood and Essendon, the only two suitors interested enough to consult medicos, both knocked him back. Dunno if they poked and prodded him as well, or whether reports alone are enough for recruiters.

It's a side of footy I know sweet f*ck all about, to be honest.

Luckily James Kelly did.
Eventually, but definitely yes.
Occasionally does some average kicks, unlikely related to the leg, but overall as a mid, our #2 or 1 over the past 3-5 years.

Emma Quayle tweeted today that T Menzel has met with GWS again this week and reckons they'll take him at number 3. No one knows more about the draft than her, so I'd say we're done here.

Might be done with T-Menzel, but this story is worth a read. (For those of you who aren't subscribed to the herald sub, copy the headline and paste it in google and click the herald sun link, can circumvent their silly paywall).

Supposedly Stringer's stocks have taken a tumble the past few months - among those in the know - but club insiders at the Cats say we won't hesitate to take him, and give him as long as he needs to continue to recover.

I personally don't think for a second that Stringer would last until 16. Unless all this talk of him going to the Bulldogs is amateurs mumbling, and in actuality many recruiters are long resigned to not selecting him, due to injury. Regardless, although it's unlikely, this story is very optimistic in terms of Stringer coming to the Cats.

*Am aware that this might just be a HS fill in for a slow AFL news day. Thought I should pop it up regardless.

There has been a LOT of talk that the Doggies will take Stringer. His approach to his footy is right up Maccas alley. I believe he trained with the Dogs during the 2012 pre season. The Dogs and Stringer have been in continuous contact since.

If we weren't to take him, I'd be surprised if he lasted until 16. But as the Doggies seem to be enjoying the fruits from Kardinia Park of late, I hope he does.

There's previous talk in this thread that the Doggies will take Tenzel if GWS don't. I have heard that the Dogs have had a keen eye on him for a time, and he has trained with them oft. Although I don't know much about the current status of the Dogs and Stringer. Is he almost definitely going to WB?

I ask because as far as I know the Bulldogs seem to have one pick locked in, given that the top 5 has started to shape up pretty solid I assume (I'm not sure of their names off the top of my head, other than Whitfield and Toumpas). So if the Bulldogs were to take Tenzel, wouldn't they be choosing him over over Stringer, alongside that pick they have relatively locked in (whose name I cannot remember, apologies).

As a Bulldogs fan, what is your best understanding of the likelihood the Bulldogs will take Stringer with little no no hesitation?

Stringers name has been put up more than any other on the Doggies board. Albeit merely by us uninformed BigFooty nuts. He has been linked in several media reports though. It's probably the "way he goes about it" which makes me believe Macca will jump at getting him.

The most recent reports have us taking a potentially sliding Toumpas (which is a little hard to believe) and either O'Rourke/Stringer. One ready to go gun, and one "project".

Like you said Menzel also has been linked, but so are many at this point in time.

A while back, many were hoping we could grab Stringer at our 20something pick which was a little ambitious, but it does make your 16/17 pick a possibility.

Stringer is an animal though. Likens his game to Goddard and Pavlich which is spot on. Plays with aggression and has the skills and finesse to cap it off. Will definitely be a player to watch.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure why the HS just assumes he'll go to the Cats if WB take a pass on him. If he is that good, I don't understand why the clubs between p7-15 won't lunge for him.

Would you be very surprised if the Bulldogs didn't pick him?

With the continuous talk surrounding Stringer, and the likelihood of him being the epitome Macca type, I would be very surprised.

But if a Toumpas was to slide, this may change things.

I think what would be in your favor is the badly broken leg of Stringers which has worried off quite a few recruiters. There is no doubting his quality, at his best he was earmarked for a top 2-3 pick, but the "unknown" surrounding his leg will force a safe gamble for many clubs.

That said, the Doggies with pick 5&6 may feel the "risk" of one pick is worth the potential reward.

emma quayle has menzel as the third best player in the draft, saying if GWS don't take him at pick 3 then he probably won't last until their next pick at 12.

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaah he's not coming to the Cats. Interestingly tho, the HS phantom draft (which proliferated to all the other News Limited Newspapers) has the Cats securing Jake Stringer at #16. Cats have already said they'd take him, and no other club is interested enough to gamble their only first round selection on an injured player. Thus GWS and the Bulldogs are really the only things preventing the Cats from receiving Stringer. This keeps playing on my mind!

But yeah, there'll only be one Menzel at the Cats for quite some time now.

If your namesake shared your wisdom he may have actually won the election. I agree with you that Stringer has become a big chance to tumble down the order to us, while Menzel on the other hand doesn't look as though his draft positioning will be affected at all by his injuries, meaning that unfortunately he's no chance of slipping through to us. We can only hope that GWS draft him and that he requests a trade to Geelong in a couple of years and that we can suitably facilitate a trade.

The one thing i'm confused about is that Stringer broke his leg. Its not really a on going problem. While Menzel has had 2 injuries to his knees and Groin problems. Both missed a fair amount of footy. Now those seem more recurring issues then stringer. Both rated top 5 if not their injuries, yet Stringer is rated to drop a lot more. Also i'm sure I heard Stringer kicked a lot of goals in his first game back.

I've heard/read that his game back he had 21 touches and kicked 9.6.

Quote from the Hun may explain it:
Recruiters described the 191cm goalkicker's running gait as "atrocious" in the 3km time-trial at last month's AFL draft combine.
Another said it was like he was running on "one leg".

That's what I heard too, with those figures I don't care if he runs like SJ in a hobble.

Thats a reasonable comparison. If SJ was a horse they would have shot him , but games are not won in the preseason with stylish sprints.
