I've never really though much about him, but as we need a decent backup ruckman and a key forward and his name seems to be thrown up as a trade fairly often: would he be more than just an "ok" player, or is he a guy that could kick 50 goals a year from Full forward? What would you give for him?

I remember he kicked 5 goals on Scarlett earlier in the year and for mine seems a handy player, but we want someone who is more than handy, could he be?

I actually just had this discussion with Petrie Dish.

I believe North are or will be throwing $350k at Simmonds, and looking at him to be their number 1 ruckman.

Petrie Dish is a big rap for him, but i'm not. He's a very handy footballer, but i don't think he is good enough in any particular area to be justifying such money.

He's been at two AFL clubs and hasn't been able to become number 1 ruckman at either, which is worrying.

I wouldn't be against getting him, on the proviso that we don't look to him as a solution to our ruck woes and that we don't pay him over the odds.

Geelong needs 2 forwards as a priority, a 3rd tall defender and a pacy midfielder ( will probably be Tenace ) before they look at a back up ruckman.

Ruckman who play forward are very rarely consistently successful.

Yeah, that figure was according to scottywiper who has been on the money (no pun intended) quite a few times before.

Personally I do rate him, although I wouldn't personally go over 300K, but he is attracting quite a bit of interest apparently, and likely isn't required at the Dockers next season at that sort of money. Speaking from a North point of view however, we NEED a ruckman, which I still believe Simmonds is. Porter and McKernan are on their last legs (the former may even retire) and Hale and McIntosh aren't ready to be fulltime ruckman, and Simmonds seems a logical choice considering his ability to go forward if required.

In my personal opinion he'd be a good fit in Geelong, but not at that money.

if i was geelong i'd take simmonds straight away, and put him at FF for us.

Simmo plays his best footy as a ruckman - he is at best an average FF. He came to us to escape from the shadow of Jeff White at Melb, had a good season as our number 1 ruck... then has gradually moved to third in line behind Longmuir and Sandilands (who is till only 20). He is still a good mobile ruckman with a good leap and is good around the ground.... not a great FF (although this was his first season playing there).
North could do worse - they have a history of doing very well out of trading with Freo...
I think the Cats could do better if you are after a FF. We need a FF, and Simmo, unfortunately, is not it...

On the not being first ruckman thing I thik the reason is that Connolly is trying to fit 3 ruckmen into a team. Sandilands can do nothing but ruck (i.e. no flexability) and J Lo is good a a floating ruckman type and has had two/three years at FF/CHF and hasn't suceeded. J Lo can't kick outside 50m while Simmonds can.

Simmonds was made FF by default because the other two J Lo and Sandi can't play/ aren't suited to FF.

To get Simmonds you would have to secure J. Carr from port in a 3 way deal. I think thats what freo would be hoping. Though i don't know what CC is conjuring, could be completely random.

We could probably use Steven King as a permanent forward, would ease the stress on others, but because he is the best rucking option on our list, he simply plays there.

Im not a convinced advocate of TS but Im not sure you can make sweeping statments that players are this or that based on Fremantle form. FF more than any other position relys on the delievery and the structure and your forward setup.Fremantle would have been awfull to play FF in with two small ball hungry forwards crowding the forwardline.I know he has spring but if he can mark on the lead, if he is reasonably quick of the mark, if he has a reasonable coversion rate backed up by solid kicking tecnique, he would have more weapons than most of our forward options.On the Fremantle site he is listed as 196 which is small for a ruckman, long term he needs a position on the ground
