Getting killed in the middle by two "apprentice' rucks really hurt us.

Where is Simmonds at?

Another experienced player who went missing last thursday night.

The ruck division has been a weak link for a number of years and the future is not looking rosy at the moment.

If Troy can't lead and set an example for the young blokes (Bowne, Vickery, etc) then he needs to contemplate beyond 09, for the sake of the club.
 
simmonds SHOULD be at centrelink collecting un employment !! but instead our coaching staff want him in our football team as a ruckman .. when its pretty clear he aint !!!!
 
should spend 60% in the forward line and 40% in the ruck. then let one or two of the younger ruckmen do the other 60% rucking, would like patto and vickery/gus.

well he's better in the forward line where he can take a big grab than in the ruck where he cant win the hit out counts. and cant hit it to our advantage to the midfielders.

no hes not, hes never been a big hitout winner ever in his career, his strength as a ruckman is hes probably fitter and covers more ground than most ruckmen.

If we plonk him fwd which weve done in the past, he drops regulation marks with his incredibly hard hands and the way the ball zips out of our fwd line when it hits the deck well lets just say we may as well have pettifer back in their bc simmo aint going to be putting fwd line pressure on anyone.

i know he has never been a big hit out winner, but he cant spend 100% time in the ruck, yes he can drop some sitters, but he is pretty good in a pack. he is doing all right in the role he is doing now covering the ground. but we need someone to take the no.1 ruck role from him

i agree, unfortunately thats not going to happen this year. Maybe next if Vickery comes on. I still dont think he should spend much time in the fwd line maybe 5-10 mins at a time here and there to create a mismatch not 50-60% of the time like you said originally :)
 
Last week were were floating on air looking forward to the year nad now we realise our team is as full of holes as a sieve.......welcome to Tigerland anyone visiting from the normal world.
 
Simmonds must produce some better results this year or retire.

for comparison;

over the last 4 years Simmonds avg's 15.3 hit outs per game

over the last 4 years Jolly avg's 21.5 hitouts per game

The age old addage that ruckmen peak in thier late 20's early 30's doesn't help Simmonds.

Give the young fellas like Vickery and Browne more game time and employ a good ruck coach. They can't do much worse?

Simmonds should be a back-up ruck at best, but the dillema is what do we do with him when not rucking? He drops too many marks that you would expect a ruckman to take.

i said 60% so that one of our younger ruckmen take the no. 1 spot and we are not left with a massive hole when he retires. but yes now that i think about it maybe not the best idea to have him spend too much time in the forward, as you said short bursts.
 
graham and browne should take over in the ruck. simmo should play as a forward to add some height, his disposal around the ground is terrible and a liability.

This guy was nearly All Australian before a couple of injury riddled seasons. Watch a replay of our game against the Bombers late last year where he played a major role in winning the game for us against Hille.
Then watch our season in 07 when he wasn't on the ground and see how we went.

Look further into those hit out figures to show how many Carlton Hit outs were against Browne rather than Simmonds. We were smashed on the ground so even Sandilands wouldn't have made a huge impact.

Yeah it wasn't his greatest night but Simmonds is the most important player on our list right now and has been a good player for us since coming to the club. Does anyone consider that he might be more effective if we had some decent support for him so he is not carrying the bulk of the ruck duties. If you want to see us get hammered play Gus,Browne or Patto as our ruck combo and enjoy a season similar to 2007.

Not sure which injury riddled seasons you refer to? 07 he only played 10 games but otherwise he never played fewer then 21 games whilst with the tige's.

As for the hit out figures, a player with as much experience as he has against a first and second year player should have dominated the hit outs to give the on ballers first use. But NO he couldn't.

Bring on the youth.:thumbsu: If they get smashed like Patto did in 07 then so be it. When Simmonds retires or is sacked in the next few years we will still only have kids in the ruck anyway won't we?

In 07 he missed the preseason and the start of the year due to injury.
He then played 3 or 4 games and got injured again missing a large chunk of the year before stringing half a dozen games together to finish the year playing while not match fit. That is what I would call an injury riddled year. Last year he played the year with a few niggling injuries and still finished the year with pretty decent form.

That is what I am referring to. Prior to 07 his form was excellent and most would have had him in the top 2 or 3 ruckmen in the league along with Cox and Lade.

You mention as an example that Jolly has more hit outs on average than Simmonds. What about the fact that Simmonds averages more Disposals, Marks and goals than Jolly?


As for Simmonds holding up the development of youth there is a second ruck spot available that Patto has not made his own.

Two years from now we should have 20 or 30 games into Gus,Browne or even Vickery to go with the 60-70 games Patto will have played by then if still around. All those played with Simmonds playing alongside them. Seems like a reasonable spread of game time to me.
 
The fact is our ruck division is Sh1t! Simmonds is an alright player, but as a tap ruckman can't cut the mustard. Vickery is only a tall, scrawny 18 year old. He has alot of potential but not yet up to it, too raw.

Angus Graham is simply just CRAP!. Hence us playing another inexperienced 18 year old whose just been recruited as a rookie over him.
Browne is still too young!

Whilst I agree 07 was not a good year for Simmonds you can put him up on a pedastal all you like, but the fact is he is not a good ruckman. He is serviceable and yes he covers more ground than someone like Jolly. But it's the hitouts to the on ballers that is required by a good ruckman. First use of the ball, hits to advantage and so on.

He is now 30 and has by all reports had a good pre season, so it's time for him to deliver, take Browne and Vickery under his arm and show them the way is it not? If he won't teach these young fellas who will? He was soundly beaten last week by two kids.

Time for Simmonds to stand up or consider his future.

but in 5 yrs time when we reflect back we will say, that troy simmonds was another wasted trade and decision

simmonds is another story, could be this could be that but all he is is a list clogger
 
Has become slow, lumbering, and gets caught with the ball far too often. Sometimes he thinks he's a rover.

Last year for snake. Problem is, who comes in? Graham is not up to standard, putt??? Pattison?? Oh god my brain hurts.

Spot on Blaisee, he was one of our best trades since the inception of the draft, would have been for any club.

FWIW, Simmonds' contract was always going to be back ended - not financially, but physically. How could it be otherwise when you trade for a 196cm KPP who will be in his 30's by the end of his term?

The truth is, we really didn't think we'd need Simmonds much by the end of his contract. We'd just picked up Knobel to play first ruck until at least 2010/2011 (he'd be 28 now), and say what you like about his work around the ground, he was capable of competing very well against anyone in the league as a pure ruckman. Simmonds can only do that occasionally and never for sustained periods.

Simmonds wasn't ever supposed to be our no.1 ruckman, he was barely supposed to be our no.2 ruckman. Naturally we hoped back at the beginning of '05 that a far more capable ruckman and forward at his best in Stafford could probably go until the end of 2007/8 - he'd have been 32/33yo.

As it turns out, full credit to Simmonds, he did work out better than expectations and has done a pretty admirable job in difficult circumstances.

It's really quite strange that so few years after these things happened, so many people have this bizarre mindset that we somehow deliberately set out to have Simmonds playing number one ruck for us. It was never supposed to be.

On the subject of ruckmen, as we head down the road to Kardinia Park this weekend, it's worth remembering that we've beaten Geelong at home once in something like the last 20 games, and it was rd.9 2006 when Knobel smashed Ottens and gave us first use in the centre at crucial stages throughout the game, while Simmonds was able to play the second fiddle role he was supposed to, give Mooney a hiding in the ruck, then drift forward and kick 3 goals.

With the same luck most clubs have, Wallace would have the luxury of taking the same very decent ruck combo we recruited for virtually nothing to Kardinia Park this week - and we'd be a better side for it.
