Wow - Canada have beaten the Yanks in the women's soccer semi-final, that should give the Matilda's a Phillip for their upcoming semi vs Sweden.
Has Alica Schmidt made an appearance for Deutschland yet? (quite safe to google, if you feel the need)
I did just google her. I'm more a fan of the eastern european middle distance runners, the pole vaulters, and high jumpers, personally.

I don’t know what it is about Australian soccer and basketball teams on the cusp of glory.
There’s always some wildly contentious officiating bullsh¡t and/or the jammiest of daggers for the opponent.

Both soccer and basketball are highly politicised and seen as the domain of European/American nations who believe that Australia should stick to what it is good at e.g. swimming and cricket. There's a reason why both FIFA and FIBA are located in 'neutral' Geneva.

matildas playing an attacking entertaining brand of football. Have been the better team by far but an umpire takes a goal off them, then Sweden spends the next 90 mins flopping whoever anyone gets within 5m of them while fouling and holding non stop and getting away with it.
umpires rewarding the Swedish team for playing an ultra defensive game where they’ve barely attacked and scored from a goalkeeper error and lucky bounce then flopped and dived their way to a win.
Australians absolutely rip into anyone we deem to be soft or a flopper but on the world stage our teams reluctance to dive at a soft breeze while having penalties and fouls called against them regularly has cost our teams quite a few times now.
