Chinese authorities are cracking down on the practice of hiring strippers as funeral entertainment, a technique some rural families use to increase the turnout at a loved one's final farewell.

The country's Ministry of Culture said late last month it would be targeting "striptease" and other "obscene, pornographic and vulgar performances" at funerals and other gatherings across Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Hebei provinces..........

tribey there is an article out today that says Adelaide must populate or perish and become a backwater, as our growth falls even further behind the other states in terms of jobs and population.

Nuclear? Nah m8
Australia and SA in particular shit me with this. We should be making money for jam storing the world's nuclear waste. Then we should be at the forefront for Thorium research, given Australia has the world's largest reserves. We should be making money off that from supply, through the technology of the reactors. And then having clean nuclear that provides reliable base load power to address climate change. FFS.

How is going nuclear going to increase or population? Most jobs involving it would be out woop woop and be quite specialised. Not sure how many of our own we would be keeping or drawing from interstate with that industry.

Being in the forefront of the renewables industry with wind, solar etc would be offering just as much, if not more.

University offerings, jobs at the sites, jobs at the companies that manage the sites, jobs that create the structural steel for the site, jobs that create and maintain the technology and electronics.

It's not as if all of BHP have their jobs in whoop whoop, they have ginormous offices in town. In fact they are going to be the new co-tenancy at the GPO Tower in Adelaide.

Renewables don't create the same amount of jobs, and they aren't targeted specifically to the fact we have enormous mineral resources that are the envy of the world - and we're failing to harness them as well as we could be.

Furthermore, renewables doesn't allow us to export the resources either.

HOWEVER - why the **** don't we have both. It's not as if we have to choose between one or the other.

This bloke has been banging his head against the wall for ages - I swear he puts out this article at least twice a year. Perhaps he's atrophied too...

The state of the state

Can South Australia, a state conceived in the 19th century and now shackled to a regressive political orthodoxy and failing economy, survive in the 21st century? Yes, but only if two serious defects are remedied, writes Malcolm King.
...

If the state’s production and tax base keeps shrinking and the rate of recurrent and non-recurrent federally-funded monies keeps rising, then South Australia might as well become an incorporated, wholly owned subsidiary of the Commonwealth Government.

The state can prosper but it must correct two serious defects that have plagued it for 40 years: educational under-achievement and atrophied thinking in the public and private sectors.

I've two boys 10 and 12 in a public school, so education is important to me, but forking hell, this 'throw more money as the only solution', despite all the prior money doing jack shit annoys the hell out of me. At the risk of a Left/Right fight, I'd rather see it much easier to get rid of underperforming teachers, ditch the 'your child tried' (but we won't tell you they would have failed badly under the old reporting style) and everyone's a winner baby. I won't even get started on whole word type learning to read. Nah, screw it, I will. That bullshit was why I put myself through the torture of lots of phonics with my kids when my boys were learning to read. The number of kids that couldn't or could barely read that were / are pushed through to the next grade in primary schools these days is mind boggling. [/END RANT]

My point's not so much about throwing money at the problem as, unfortunately, the most reliable predictor of educational success is the socio-economic status of the familys (which doesn't mean rich kids smart/poor kids dumb, or that kids from low socio-economics background can't be successful, or that kids from more money never struggle to learn).
