In the AFL talk thread there is some talk about Dave Hughes and Kate something-or-rather and panel shows. Then it got me thinking, Good News Week.

Acceptable at the time it was on?
Still holds up today?
Good in it's day, terrible now?
Started off well and got progressively worse?

Where does this one and it's associated panel members sit.

I liked 'GNW: Night Lite' back in the day, but Paul McDermott singing with every band they had on would be eviscerated in social today.

I think the show definitely had its moments but the Great Debates were pretty naff. Just full of boring cliches and lame jokes.

I would’ve let her stay and teed something up between the bowler and batter. She wouldn’t have stayed long.

That reminds me of playing Broadview back in the day on an oval in the middle of Hillcrest hospital in it’s hey day. Guy wondered on, dropped trousers and did a shit in the goal square when I was lined up at full forward. Not the best spot for under 9’s game.

I used to go to Concordia College, which was situated right next to Julia Farr.

Many many stalking incidents and inappropriate actions perpetrated by the clientele on the teenage school girls.

Most of the clientele of the Julia Farr Centre (formerly the Home For Incurables) were completely immobile and without human assistance couldn't scratch their own arses. My mum worked as a physio there for over 10 years.

Must have been some serious mind ****ing going on back then.

One guy used to wander over, and he had a ginormous haematoma on his head. Used to stalk my misses all the way to Rundle Mall. Barrelled her up in those glass lifts at the old Toys R Us once.

Caused a big kerfuffle and sternly worded letters to parents that everything was being done to protect their safety, did lol.

I wonder what happened to haematoma guy.

Oh wait, he's probably me.

Gerard Whateley's call of Brady being stripped of the ball with just over 2 minutes left and not knowing what to do next has received some attention in the states.

We’ve compiled 13 different broadcasts of the play, including the local announcers as well as TV and radio from five different continents. (Our favorite is Australia—with Kevin Harlan’s Westwood One call a close second—but tell us which one you liked best in the comments.)

NT pushing for a new Crocodile Dundee movie to be made in the NT after Tourism Oz spent a month teasing the yanks a new one is to be made but it was just a precursor for their $5mil Super Bowl ad. There is always a croc angle for these blokes. But the other headline is classic NT News.

I dont know his stuff but were does Gerard rate compared to him in your opinion.
He's the lead NBA commentator on ESPN. Honestly couldn't compare him to any one AFL commentator. Think the humour and likability of Dennis Commetti, the encylopaedic knowledge of Bruce McAvaney, the unbiased and intelligent play calling of Gerard Whateley/Anthony Hudson and the passion and excitement of BT all rolled into one guy. Plus the ability to sit back and let the action speak for itself when appropriate, which I don't think any AFL commentator shares.

Gerard wins AFL commentary simply by having a vocabulary more extensive than a third grader.
The people who commented on DeadSpin, the website who agreed he was the best of the 13 calls you could listen to, basically said the same thing. This was Gerard's call

The Australian one is by far the best of the English language examples (with an honorable mention to Kevin Harlan). I mean, “...ball knocked out of his hands. Eagles recovah! The Eagles get the ball back. The script is flipped. Tom Brady bereft on the turf. It has literally been ripped from his grasp.” I want this guy on American broadcasts now and forever.

Ten thousand bonus points to the Aussie for literally using “literally” correct!

Love that the Australian dude calls Brady “bereft”. Do you think Collinsworth has ever even heard that word? [Collinsworth is the ex Cincinnati Bengals Wide Receiver on the NBC call with Al Michaels]

“The script is flipped! Tom Brady - bereft on the turf! It has lit-rully been RIPPED from his grahsp!” God damn, I need this saved forever. Go Birds.

But then again Gerard can become a bit of an emotional mary about a song
