The party is elected by the public, via the politician(s) you vote for in your electorate.I would argue that just because the PM is not directly elected does not mean it is not an elected position.
The leader is one of the most important considerations that voters say influence the way they vote.
The Prime Minister is elected by the elected party's sitting politicians and not by the public (Before the election, but there is nothing stopping the party over throwing the prime minister.)
