Trump to Turnbull: "* off Mal!"

As flippant as that comment is, we do need to look after our own interests and should seriously question where our future lies.
China saved our arse during the GFC and Trump probably can't even spell Anzus, yet the yanks still refuse to sell us F22s and will dud us with barely flyable F35s at about half the capacity and 5 times the cost of the latest Russian military hardware.

Open slather.
Give China an opening and see what they can do for us. They control 90% of the world's rare earth minerals, we control the other 10%. Combined we should have every electronics manufacturer on the planet kissing our arse (and China have used that trading leverage against Japan before).

I have said it in other threads but our best bet is to embrace being a middle power in our region and repair the damage we have done to our standing within Asean.

Individually we may not be super poweful but a proper alliance between Vietnam, Singapore, Indo, Australia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand (and others) is a serious bloc and a manufacturing, farming and resource powerhouse. Get Good Korea and Japan in on it and thats every bit as powerful as the EU.

China will be number one in the region soon if it isnt already. Better to position ourselves as a leader amongst equals in Asean instead of being Americas deputy.

Asean want nothing to do with us. Took us decades just to get observer status

They hate our historic ties with the uk and the usa, as we were the white voice supporting the colonisers in asia

Money talks though. With all of our tax dodgers in Singapore and our ties to the dictatorship in Indo we could well get in, but we would need to be genuine about cutting our allegiance to the colonisers i agree. We would need to be a republic first.

Might be more realistic to pivot to the pacific nations from PNG to the east.

Trump will honour the deal. He was always going to. He's going after China and knows he needs all the major white powers on his side; I believe his target on China is the main reason he is getting friendly with Putin. Regionally we are super important to Trump.

He's just damn mad that he has to take the deal because of this. Tomorrow he'll announce a reason why they will honour the deal, and it will be calculated specifically to minimise political damage with those who voted for him.

Already been reported today that trump doesnt rate australia, our relationship, and he has no issue kicking us aside.

We provide him with nothing

This deal wont happen. We need to accept that

Question is how hard do we respond.

Id seriously look at cancelling the jsf. The planes cost are skyrocketing, and its capabilities are facing more and more doubts.

Kill the deal, and spend the $300b on non us planes

Btw agreeing to the deal means s**t if none of the refugees pass "extreme vetting"

As i said before they will agree, reject them all, and were left looking like dicks

We were one of the few nations to be pathetic and support trumps muslim ban. And this is how he says thanks

He has zero respect for us, why will he honor the deal if hes better of killing it domestically

Turnbull has no choice.
What do we expect our PM to do ?...sacrifice the potential futures of 1000+ souls just so he can make some sort of popularist statement ?
Aust would rightly slice him to death slowly if he didnt at least try on their behalf.
If the deal doesnt work out so be it...gotta try.

And if it falls over due to Trump he can easily pot Trump as it will play well in the Australian populace. Those involved in US business will still deal with Australia irrespective of Trumps outbursts.

Those nations are pretty useless though (NZ excepted and even then they aren't much)

Just like a conservative government shouldn't sign a contract with a toll road operator to build a toll road just months out from an election where the other party pledged before the election not to build just months out from the election?

Wait, wut?!
The world doesn't revolve around Victoria, Dixie! This thread is about another possible shirtfronting.

Point is though what is the difference between signing a deal with one outgoing leader where you know it was opposed by the incoming administration in both cases?

Strategically they are quite important as far as control of shipping lanes go. Theyre also in our neighbourhood so to speak and considering the staggering wealth gap between Aus/NZ and the rest its a bit shameful if we dont do more.

And they do have some pretty inpressive natural resources in places like Timor and PNG though we arent considered very trustworthy in either of those places thanks to Alexander Downer.

Can hardly blame Timor given we promised them the world then threw them an Atlas (while stealing the bulk of oil revenue within their EEZ).
Even re-drawing the agreement slightly more in their favour we will make off like bandits.

Dear Aussie Alt-right *******s and Trumpites.

Still think he's good for Australia? In the space of a week he's encouraged Islamic terrorism, aggravated China (our biggest trade partner) pulled out of the TPP, publicly slagged us off (the worlds 6th largest economy and 13th largest military, central ally in Asia and long time friend to the US for 100+ years), and all but s**t canned the Nauru deal.

None of this is in our national intrest. Quite the ******* opposite in fact.

How can he encourage Islamic terrorism when terrorism has nothing to do with Muslims as I've been told a million times?

Why would Trump ban refugees from volatile countries, only to let in 1200 illegals. You'd be first in line calling him a hypocrite.

He never signed the deal, he shouldn't have to take them in.

So, Australian flag fondlers have sided with a white nationalist over their own PM?

What the *, I love Turnbull and the Australian Government now
- The hypocritical left.

Trump's doing what's best for business, can't hate him for that. I wish our government would start thinking what's best for our country.
