After witnessing todays performance, (And leaving at 3 qtr-time) it is time to rebuild instead of aim for a Premiership in the next 2 years. I wouldnt go for ANY players over the age of 25, no matter how elite and cheap they will come. Collingwood has to, along with the current batch of kids, build a core group of 10-15 quality future AFL players that can win this team a Premiership. For far too long, we have tried the whole recycled player BS. Its time to just have faith in our kids and actually focus on bringing in as many talented youngsters as possible. In other words, do a St Kilda, but less #1 picks, and just give them 2 years together to jell and grow together, and you will have the current youngsters who have some experience after the last 2 years stand up and lead these other youngsters we should go for this year and the ones that havent played from the '05 draft..

"Try & get back to 10-11pm" - Premiership clock. (Instead of aiming for 11-12, if that makes sense)

Thoughts..?

Agree with your thoughts about not trading for players over a certain age, otherwise we will find ourselves in a similar situiation when Buckley / Clement / Presti / Rocca / Licuria / Burns all retire.

Really hope that we draft NOBODY from West Coast this season unless it is Judd / Nicoski / Rosa, Williams is an ok VFL player but did nothing in the seniors (I know Adkins didn't do much over there either) & Morrison is going to retire now.

Guess we will have to wait about a month for trade week to see how many trades we don't make again.

A couple of weeks ago you were saying that we'd win a preimership in the next few years PieLebo. What's changed? Sure the Pies were insipid today but the fact is that they still have a very good chance to win it in the next couple of years IMO.

And if Collingwood are going to rebuild after this year, it means that some serious culling of the list has to take place. Who do you want to cut, Licca? Burns? O'Bree? Buckley? Because it's those types of players that will have to make way for some youngsters if you want to go into full rebuild mode.

Yes we still have to give the kids a lot of game time but just because we're playing them, doesn't mean we should write off our chances for a premiership while we've still got some extremely talented older players who still have a lot to offer.

After witnessing todays game, this list MAY sneak a Premiership, JUST. But would you rather sneak a Premiership and enter the football wilderness for a few years after OR, try and create a Brisbane Lions-type list and have a good go for 5-6 years with a high chance of success?
Of the players you named, I dont think any are under the age of 27-28, so what can we expect? 2-3 years? Lets also keep in mind, they are not elite players, they will not perform to the highest of levels for those 2-3 years. If we had a couple of Dal Santos, Balls and Harveys with 2 years left in them then okay, but O'Bree, Licuria ect arent even in the same field as those players. You also have to take into consideration that these older players are taking the midfield places of younger players such as Shaw x2, Pendles, Davies ect. (I'd add Icca to that list, eventually) As for Bucks and Burns, they have been 1 club players, Black and White bred, so there is always room for them, plus Bucks and Burns are actually more valuable to us then the others. Burnsy is our hardest player and Buckley is still a deadly kick and forward player.
I just see a great group between the age of 21 and 25 that have class and talent about them that we can use, with the recent draft picks and the additions of some real talent in this draft. We can plan a VERY good football side by trading for draft picks and drafting smart.
Dane Swan, Brodie Holland, Leon Davis, Josh Faser, Alan Didak, Ben Johnson, Simon Prestigiacomo and even Ryan Lonie as the mature older players with the likes of-
Dale Thomas, Scott Pendlebury, Bed Davies, T Cloke, Harry O'Brien, Sean Rustling as the prime group who win matches in 2 or so years.
And the youthful x-factor of this years draft picks and the un-tried picks of last year as the extras in a team that keep the other players fighting for their spots in the team. Its sad to say, but it has become wishful thinking to try and get Buckley a Premiership, as the Lions admited in 2004, its the choice of going for glory for that year or so or planning for an extended run for glory in a year or so after that makes the difference.
Would you prefer;
COLLINGWOOD PREMIERSHIP -
2007, Captained by Buckley

or

COLLINGWOOD PREMIERSHIPs -
2009-2010-2012 ect, with a star list that made it possible thanks to the planning and tough decision making in 2006.

I'm not saying that we should be playing players just because they've been good servants to the club or because they've got the experience. But what we don't need to do is completely slice the list apart, which is what we'd have to do if we were going to completely rebuild.

With the current core of mid-age to young players we have a very solid base to build upon in the comign seasons. What we don't want to do is throw them all in at the deep end and expect them to instantly take the mantle as our number 1 players.

Players like Buckley, Burns, O'Bree, Tarrant, Licuria will be able to help these guys much more in there development by playing alongside them and teaching them on the field than letting them go by themselves.

When you look at this year as a whole (not just the last game) we've blooded a few youngsters who have come on pretty well. If we continue to blood more next year while increasing the gametime of players like Thomas, Pendlebury, Rusling, Davies etc. that had a taste this year they'll only improve. Now this might mean that the older players will get less games or gametime but cutting them completely will only put us back rather than take us forward.

We finished 5th this year! Only percentage out of the top 4! If we decide to scratch that by going on a rebuilding program now it'll only hurt the development of the young up and comers IMO.

EXACTLY.
That means NOT signing an Aker, Spida or Kelly or whoever else is in mind.
But going for the best talents in the draft, and getting rid of any unnecassary players for more picks. I hope we can imporve our consistency next year with this group, but I wouldnt want to take away the spot of a possible future gun for a Jason Akermanis or Spider Everitt ect.

And Im starting to slowly shift my opinion on MM. If we could get Mick Maguane (Cant remember the last name) or a Guy McKenna, wouldnt a new face, along with the developing youngsters and new picks be beneficial for the club? Question, not statment! I sort of agree with it, MM has had his go and appears past it at times.
