Tsonga What a Gun

Being silly? So you were there were you? As I said, probably 5% of the crowd was going for Baghdatis, and that's being generous. They were ALL going for Monfils, because of his chest pumping and hands up in the air celebrations. The previous years favourite, given the showcase night match, was given barely any support because the crowd suddenly had a new favourite. Fickle.

But so what??? Were they booing Baghdatis? The kid was putting on a good show, and was playing out of his mind at that time. Hard not to cheer for that, right? So you didn't cheer when he smashed that 190km/hr forehand down the line? And what were you doing supporting Baghdatis? What made you choose him over Monfils? On the Bandwagon from the previous year?

Once again, who out there only supports one particular player? Tennis fans generally watch to see a good game of tennis!

How about wait and see? the guy is already 22 with a terrible body. Was injured 11 times in the last 3 years.Makes 1 final and all of a sudden everyone is on his bandwagon.Does it the name Rios ring a bell?
Rios? Hahahaha, Rios never had the temperament to win a Slam. Not to mention he was a knob as well.

Good luck to Tsonga. Completely obliterated a very high quality player tonight who wasnt playing badly at all. I feel it will end up like Baghdatis or Gonzalez in the final, the pressure will most likely get to him, especially as a shotmaker. But who knows, if he can manage to tame the nerves he could potentially pull off a boilover. Should be entertaining as always.

So if you don’t boo someone it means you must be supporting them? My word this board is a shocker this time of year. Let me get it through your head, whenever Monfils won a point the crowd erupted, they gave him standing ovations when he won points, whereas when Baggy won a point there was little reaction. I don’t think it’s hard to determine who the crowd is going for, if you’ve got ears that are operational you’re good to go.

What made me chose Baghdatis over Monfils is quite simple. As I said in his appreciation thread from last year, Monfils is a tool who constantly has injury time outs when things aren’t going his way to halt the momentum. Whenever he’s down in the set he’ll give up and drop his head, absolutely no fighting spirit. Last year against Baghdatis he was up 2 sets to love but he started getting pumped in the 3rd. What does he do? Start acting as though he’s injured, call for the trainer, then have a miraculous recovery in the 4th set and get the crowd even more onside when he started winning again. Baghdatis is a nice guy but I’m not that big of a fan, I was giving him support because of what a tool Monfils is.

No, idiot, did I say that they must be supporting him because they weren't booing him? They were taken back by this kid you was playing off his ****, thats all. What's so wrong with that?

I understand that you think you have some authority around here when it comes to talking tennis, but honestly, what are you on about? And what is your opinion of Tsonga's performance tonight, by the way? He didn't call any injury time outs, so he must be ok in your books. Can we continue to support him, please sir?

By the way, hard to support a guy when he was playing as shit as Baghdatis was that night.

you obviously didnt follow tennis back then.In 1998 rios was considered as the best talent in tennis.I still think he was too talented, but his problem was his attitude.A lot of people jumped on the rios wagon back then.He lost 4 matches...only 4 matches till french open,...won virtually everything (except majors) demolishing everyone

I'm only on the Tsonga wagon because of his impeccable dress sense :D

Would’ve been alright had they not completely jumped off one bandwaggon and joined another on the same night. Don’t know about you but that’s pretty fickle.

Tsonga was unbelievable tonight, one of the best performances I’ve seen in a while. Some of those winners, especially at net, were just flat out insane. Everything he tried he managed to pull off; it was just one of those nights. Nadal barely put a foot wrong but he was just destroyed out there. By all means, keep supporting him, all the way through to next years AO. If you’re still a fan by then, good on you. :thumbsu: PS. Why would he call an injury time out tonight, they only do it when they're down remember. ;)

Needed an injury time out to halt the momentum Baghdatis had, classy stuff that.

your making it sound like gonzo was such an upset but he has consistently been nuber 10-15 for years and has enough talent to beat ANYONE. He even made the semis a year or 2 ago. Guys like bagdahtis and tsonga have come out of the ground. By the way what happened to gaustin gaudio

Amazing balls-out tennis from a guy who simply had nothing to lose. To knock off Nadal, who'd been pretty solid in the tournament, AND concede only 7 games (is this right) is just straight-up awesome. Hopefully he changes nothing for the Final and pushes Federer (who'll beat Djokovic) to 5 sets.

Federer hopefully to win as (again) we await to see whether he can achieve the "slam" this year.

They were swayed by his dominance on that night, can't blame anybody for that. Sure would have been a crowd favourite if he was here again this year.

I am a fan of tennis, not any one individual.

Huge momentum he had obviously. To lose this momentum after a few minutes injury time out...well, seems like his form that night was a little bit 'fickle'? One is allowed to remove ankle strapping by the way.

meh. Everyone loves an underdog, thats why every year the general public put their weight behind someone thats come up who wasnt expected to.

But still, that game last night was insane. He may be a flash in the pan, he may never reach another final again, but he still played one of the most impressive games against one of the worlds very best that youre likely to see.

I never followed tennis back then yet you agree with what I said.

Righto, whatever.

Sure everyone loves an underdog but they havent won in a while, Baghdatis and Gonzalez, both failed attempts but with the Fed Express still vulnerable its a big chance for Tsonga to capitalise on that opportunity but if Tsonga falls under the pressure of playing Federer in a Slam final it might take its toll on him;)

Yes Tsonga has been an absolute gun through the tournament and has defeated the likes of Murray, Gasquet, Youzny and Nadal. In these matches (from what I've seen), he's been pretty fearless and played with aggression thinking he has nothing to lose. But I think the question is whether he'll continue to play fearlessly and whether the pressure of a final will cause him to a little more safely. We can only wait and see how Tsonga responds to the pressure of a grand slam final.

Federer never blasted Nadal out of court. Maybe because his game doesnt match up that well against Rafa, but Tsonga is a total package, he can volley as good as he can rally from the baseline.Give him compliment, i saw Gonzo demolish Rafa last year but rafa still had some chances in that match, today, he didnt have any.

Forgotten last years Tennis Masters Cup already?

Same reason I can't stand Djokovic.

Injuries.

I think the real question is what happened to Guillermo Coria.

I went to the Nadal v Tsonga match on Thursday evening...

What a game that was, Tsonga was electrifying he could do no wrong, he had the crowd in the palm of his hands, the photographers when the game started everyone of them faced Rafa to get the coveted shot, it didn't take long for them to switch their allegiance over to Tsonga.

Just before he won the second set he was on set point he looked at the crowd and put his finger up as if to gesture 'one more point to win the set' crowd went ballistic cheering him on and he also received standing ovations between points, in all my tennis attending games at the Aus Open I have never seen anything like it. He involved the crowd into his game and he was loving it.

I have always been a big fan of Rafa's and was dissapointed he went out in straight sets but Tsonga is something else. I saw him demolish Nalbandian last Sunday and then seeing his performance against Rafa - this kid will be going places.
