If he can win the Masters Cup he will probably rise to #5 in the world - despite missing two of the Grand Slams! Would be the first player to do so since Agassi when he'd boycott the Aussie and Wimby slams in the late 80's.
 
Could be like Safin, definately have the talent to win a GS and beat the top ranked players, but not do it for every week of the year so he won't be ranked in the top few very often.

And out of all the top players and promising youngsters, Djokovic has far less talent than all of them.

Why lesser? Tsonga has the better forehand/volley/second-serve and runs better.

First serve is probably just about a tie, and Safin's godlike backhand edges out Tsonga's very good backhand.

Probably not the same tennis IQ as Safin at the same age, but still.
 
Watched a replay of the Paris Masters final this morning and what really stood out for me was his ability to hit the wide serve with quite incredible power and accuracy, particularly the one on the ad court to Nalbandian's backhand, which is easily the hardest serve in tennis, and he was consistently hitting that at 205km/h+. Several times Nalbandian didn't even move to a wide serve as he was beaten by sheer pace.

It's a quite freakish talent. Normally players can either hit it with power or accuracy to the wide corner, but not usually both as consistently as Tsonga does.

It's quite hard to judge his temperament, as he seemed to tighten up a couple of times against Nalbandian and rushed points when he needed to slow it down (end of the second set the wheels came off, and nearly blew it when serving for the match), but he also consistently came up with big serves when he needed them (saved eight break points in the final and the most of any player all tournament) and thinking back to his Australian Open run, he closed out sets/matches with ease there too in the later rounds.

Be very interesting to see if he makes an impact in Shanghai given the quality that will be there.
 
It's a sad day for me when an artist like Nalbandian loses to a serve-only guy who can't even hit backhands over the net like Tsonga (and Roddick), but I know I'll get flamed for this.

Tsonga played very well, Nalbandian didn't play his usual devastating baseline game, may have been tired after heaps of tournaments in the last month (W Stockholm, RU Basel, Madrid and RU here).

Tsonga is your typical bandwagon ball basher like Gonzalez, Baghdatis who plays very well for 18-24 months but then will fall away.
 
That's harsh! Have to wonder where you rated Pistol Pete...

I admire Nalbandian heaps but sadly for him he's a Spring specialist. He was the form player last year by a mile towards the end of the season, but he still didn't have enough points for Shanghai. Nalbandian desperately needs a quiet Christmas so he can bring this form into the new season for once.

This post shows a frightening lack of understanding of Tsonga's game.

He's as much of a "serve-only" guy as Safin or Federer. Yes, the serve is very effective when on-song, but it's hardly his only weapon.

Roddick fair enough, but Tsonga is a completely different player.

Haha, can everyone stop comparing Tsonga to Safin, it's an indictment on Marat. Safin and Federer use tactics.

Tsonga looks really good at the moment, but he is fresh as hell at the moment, has played alot less tennis than everyone else at the end of the season. It is in my opinion that Tsonga will not remain at the top of the rankings and whilst he plays excellent touch volleys against a hard court clown like Nadal and has a powerful forehand, he will get found out big time when he doesn't blast 25 aces every match.

You're underrating his backhand big-time. It's a superb shot. As well as his terrific court coverage.

Yes, he's behind a Safin or a Federer tactically, but he's not a complete dunce either.
 
He has terrific court coverage, no doubt. He also tends to play better the deeper he goes into tournaments, which is a great attribute.

I don't agree with your assessment of his BH, breaks down big time under pressure.

Tsonga is a very good talent. Solid backhand, massive forehand and Serve as well. He's the full package IMO. At the net he is better than average easily, very good hands. His movement is also very good. He'll be fighting for the slams next year.
 
I cant see Tsonga leaving the Top 10 anytime soon though, well unless he bombs in the Aus Open.

Murray, like Djokovic, has reveled himself as part of the growing new elite. Now to 4 players. The evergreen Davydenko im a big fan of, but him & roddick arent there. Neither is nalbandian, blake, etc. Tsonga however maybe. The thing is, you need to have a stirring run to really entrench yourself up there. A masters cup win would have him on his way.
 
Tsonga's talent is unbelievable. This was evident in last years Aus open semi-final win over Nadal. I have never seen a bloke dominate Nadal the way this bloke did. He has the potential to be number 1 in the world but he still has some way to go. Great to watch but.
