Decided this was too serious for the more flippant media board and it does fit the culture and society criteria.

My big gripe is Channel 9 promoting their special, 'Tsunami - 7 days that shook the world'.

This to me is another example of media cashing in on tragedy which in itself is bad enough. What annoys me the most though is the '7 day' timeframe they have decided upon. It doesn't refer to the event itself which took place on the same day. It does imply though that the world has been affected by it for 7 days but it is all but over. Correct me if I'm wrong but are there not many thousands of people still unaccounted for? Are there not still bodies being discovered all over the place? Are there not loved ones conducting fruitless searches in these devastated areas? Are there not millions of homeless? Will there not be further death as a result of disease and starvation for years to come?

7 days? Sorry channel 9, you can't put a timeframe on this event and wrap it up in a nice tidy little package with a bow for the viewers. The world has been shook for the last 7 days alright, but it will continue to be shaken by it for an awful long time to happen. This event is almost philosophy changing IMO.

So endeth the rant.

Not only that, I almost through my chainsaw through the tele last night when Ray Martin was doing his 'heartfelt' reporter mode, and named them all as 100,000 innocents.

Paaaahhhleeeeeeeeeeeease!!!!

(Someone should tell Ch 9 that only part of the world shook, and it probably only shook for a minute or so, not seven ********ing days!)

With the enormity of what has happened I have been guilty of disasociating myself from a lot of the tragedy. Yet I recognize the amount of horror still to unfold and can see the death toll doubling.

I have been accused of been insensitive , and I have no great issue with that, but some on here, like CH 9 have raised people and the event to be more than it is IMO. Ch 9 are the first, watch the other stations rush to put out their spin

I was surprised 9 used 7 days as there promo...9 days would have been more appropriate.

I think thats more a reflextion on the way we feel about the media than it is the actual event be it Princess Di/911/Tsunamis...They just ram it down your throat with such a pompously 'oh the sadness of it all' approach whilst not having a problem repeating the same bit of footage for the 6 or 700th time. Its news as entertainment plain and simple, and that undermines any sympathy people have for this tragedy.

Its hard not to be cynical when you have people like Leila Mackinnon on Nines Today Show acting as if she is going to burst into tears over this thing in the most transparently bogus fashion possible, and then you realise this is a woman who has just married the son of the CEO of Nine and they spent like $15,000 on champagne for the wedding. As if she would care.

Yeah it all sounds a bit too crass for me, but did any of us really expect anything else from CH9? They did the same thing when Bali went up, flogged that poor CH9 Perth presenter who was holidaying there to the point that he was in tears on national tv. Just so they could boast that they were the first network there on the seen.

I dont think its just Nine that needs to be slapped round the ear'ole. Network Ten is running some Casey Donovan,Anthony Callea and friends thing at the Sydney Opera House under the pretence of raising money for the Tsunami appeal. Im sure thats being done with the purest of intentions by all and sundry.

Yeah, the same supermarket popstars being wheeled out and Ten milking money from the common folk out of it. People are donated in their droves and they are not doing it so they can get their name read out on TV. Ten get ratings, we donate money, win-win for 10. Perhaps if they offered to put in 25% of the total raised, we could respect their motivation.

Still better than a soft music filled, dramatised, multiple reruns grab for ratings cash by 9 though.

I don't think the disaster itself can be dramatised any more than the real event at any rate, purely on a loss basis. This event will shake me for the rest of my life in some capacity as will 9/11. These events in particular are incredibly surreal experiences for me. I know it is true but it could just as easily has been straight from the pages of a Hollywood script.

TODN.

While I partly agree with you and I for one am not interested in 24/7 coverage of disasters, I have read much anger from many people who have criticised the media for lack of coverage in comparison to Sept11. While the dramatisation of disasters sickens me, these programs should put to rest some of the anti-american sentiment that has been bandied around due to a percieved lack of media coverage compared to Sept11.

I have no problem with coverage as such Skip, I find 9's promotion of this one overly commercial and disrespectful. The actual event was over in seconds virtually but the fallout from it will be long lasting. How the hell can 9 judge that the impact of this amounts to 7 days. It is like they are taking it upon themselves to conclude the event. Put all their resources in it all week long but since they will now return to normal programming, the rest of us will move on too. It's almost as though they believe that our involvement in this thing is based on what they tell us. To an extent that is true because they have the power and without the media, we can't get an accurate feel for what happens around the world. I find poor journalism for them to perpetuate that stereotype deliberately. Stuff 'em, I might just be shaken for another 5000 days yet.

To look at the images of destruction id say 5000 days will be closer to the mark. However rest assured Nines commitment to quality journalism and coverage of the worst disaster in the history of the universe should quieten down as soon as the new ratings period kicks off.

I don't think 9 had much choice in wht the special was named, as I believe this special is an australianised version of a uk show. Nor am I particularly concerned by it. It may be over the top, but ultimately it's been the media's extraordainary coverage of the event, with the tantalising twists of dramatic amateur videos and the involvement of thousands of westerners, that has really galvanised the public and governements into doing the things that needed to be done, providing aid.

I really struggled watching his cross during the cricket, he's clearly sitting in a comfy hotel saying how horrible it is over there. It's so clearly turning into a media junket, I'd much rather their hotel rooms and plane seats were used by people who were really helping then a bunch of people doing by the book reports that another journalist did exactly the same 5 minutes ago.

And FWIW's I agree about the stupidity and insensitivity of saying 7 days, as if it's all over now
