Seven makes $250m bid to buy league: report

AAP --
The Seven Network is reported to have made an audacious bid for control of rugby league's pay TV rights.

The network's pay TV sports arm, C7, has offered $250 million for the pay television rights to National Rugby League matches for the next five years, The Daily Telegraph reported today.

The massive bid, the largest in the history of rugby league, comes as the network faces the loss of its AFL rights.

A consortium made up of the Nine Network, Foxtel, Telstra and Channel Ten has made an even bigger offer to secure the pay TV, free-to-air and Internet rights to the AFL.

The offer, which Seven Network boss Kerry Stokes admitted would be difficult to fend off, was reported to be worth $500 million over five years.

NRL chief executive David Moffett declined to comment on the offer from the Seven Network today, but he has been meeting with Channel 7 executives for the past three months, the paper said.

The loss of AFL rights would have dire consequences for C7.

However, by gaining rights to rugby league, the network would offset much of that damage."

Seems To Me Channel 7 cant hack that they have lost!

Channel 7 thinks they have made footy what it is! Yup thats right Channel 7 u have! U have decide to cut ansett cup games, Stuff around with interstate footy fans the works!

U get what u give it out 7! Now hack that u have lost coz finally we will have some decent footy on tv! YEAH BRING IT ON!

Channel 7 have openly said they can't match 100 million.

But even Wayne Jackson said it won't entirly come down to money. If Channel 9 offered 200 million, but didn't show any games, the AFL wouldn't want any of their money I can assure you. The netowork has got to be committed to showing games.

I feel, that if Seven can get to withing 15 million of the 9-10-foxtel bid, the AFL will go with them.

The AFL knows that 7 has the commitment to show the game. Seven have proved this over the last 45 years. You cannot fault Seven's commitment. And plus, Seven KNOW how to cover the AFL. Channel 9 have never done it before and are inexperienced.

I believe that all Channel 7 have to do, is come reasonably close and the AFL will go with them.

Remember, the current rights are 38 million per year. If Seven offers 75-80 Million, this is effectively double what the AFL are getting now, so the AFL will probably go with them. The AFL may not have the guts to go with the unknown, even if it is worth another 15 million.

All the AFL will say to Seven is : "We don't expect you to match the offer; Just show us and prove to us, that you still want to cover the game"

7 commitmented Ha dont make me laugh! They arent commitmented!

If Seven are commitmented to show afl games why are they reducing ansett cups showed on live tv!

Trust me.

I don't know just how commitmented (sic) you think Seven have been but Nine has a worse history as far as disregarding fans wishes.

What they have done with the league in Brisbane and Sydney (I assume) is ridiculous.

Coverage of League has been minimal. They rarely show Saturday night games, preferring to leave it to Pay TV. Sunday games in Brisbane are shown delayed at 4pm - 6pm and packed full of 5 minutes blocks of commercials. Nine care more about stopping their competition than they do about the sport or the fans. I think we get a better AFL coverage in Brisbane than we do League.

Same In Sydney!

Afl Coverage is alot better then league!

The Contract includes 10 or 9 to show friday nite and saturday nite live into Sydney!

Sounds alot better then what 7 has been doing showing games at 12.45 am in the morning!

Sorry to contradict everybody, but there is an article in this mornings Herald Sun stating that Channel 7 have poached Robert Walls from Channel 9.

The significant thing about this is that it sends a message that Channel 7 are going to play hardball on the AFL TV Rights. There is no way they would recruit Walls - and no way that Walls would go to 7 - if it was for only one year.

Don't forget that after both parties have thrown their best punches, Channel 7 have purchased the right to throw the one last knockout punch.

Watch this space!

This is a hallucination and these faces are in a dream. A computer generated environment; a fantasy island you can do anything and not have to face the consequences.

I have been pretty busy the last couple of weeks, but I have been catching up on all this footy rights stuff, and basically all I care about is that whoever wins shows LOTS of footy, I don't give a stuff what network it is or who's commentating. May the best network win.

We don't know how lucky we are.

7, 9 and even 10's coverage of sport is first rate compared to some of the junk that is dished up from overseas.

Ever tried watching the British Open Golf coverage from the BBC or any golf out of the US? Motorsports coeverage from overseas is woeful too.

AFL logistically would be a hard game to cover due to the shape and size of the ground, 7 do a pretty good job. It's just the damn talking heads that state the bleeding obvious, that you can see with your own eyes which is subpar.
