Seven makes $250m bid to buy league: report
AAP --
The Seven Network is reported to have made an audacious bid for control of rugby league's pay TV rights.
The network's pay TV sports arm, C7, has offered $250 million for the pay television rights to National Rugby League matches for the next five years, The Daily Telegraph reported today.
The massive bid, the largest in the history of rugby league, comes as the network faces the loss of its AFL rights.
A consortium made up of the Nine Network, Foxtel, Telstra and Channel Ten has made an even bigger offer to secure the pay TV, free-to-air and Internet rights to the AFL.
The offer, which Seven Network boss Kerry Stokes admitted would be difficult to fend off, was reported to be worth $500 million over five years.
NRL chief executive David Moffett declined to comment on the offer from the Seven Network today, but he has been meeting with Channel 7 executives for the past three months, the paper said.
The loss of AFL rights would have dire consequences for C7.
However, by gaining rights to rugby league, the network would offset much of that damage."
