I actually think Optus are going to piss off as many potential customers as they win with this.
The real loser is the FFA

The a league gets a lot of piggyback viewing from the EPL.
Disagree - I have long term Telstra contracts for fixed line and mobile and will watch a lot more A League next season because I'll not longer have the Premier League to follow. I actually think this will boost interest in the A League.

Optus propaganda/press release said:
"We're confident that when these fans see our range of great value EPL-ready plans, they'll be convinced that now is the right time to switch."
Keep telling yourself that, Optus. This is nothing short of disastrous for both company and consumer. I have no idea how they thought this plan would be popular or wise.

When it all goes to shit (or, more so than it already is) how are they going to convince Foxtel, SBS or another FTA network to jump into bed with a company that goofed so tremendously? No-one's going to align themselves with a company like that, not for the price Optus will ask.

Chalk this up as a (rather sizeable) financial loss and move on. Optus won't go near the next contract auction.

A-League doesnt broadcast in the graveyard shift.

If something is going to bring you max $40m of revenue why would you spend $60m on it?

Charging the customer base the difference isn't going to work
Because it is a draw card that they'd much rather have then not have, and yes it would, they do it all the time. They just snuck in a $1 increase.

Optus are gambling on customers ditching Foxtel and moving to Fetch TV, that's lost revenue, potentially much higher than paying 60m a year for the EPL.
They've now had to go out and bring in a lot more content to appease football fans.

You can't just talk about revenue for a single product, it's a lot more than that, it's customer moving from you to another service. It was a PR nightmare for Foxtel just as much as it is now for Optus.

Again, if Foxtel had the time again and knew what was required to pay they would have paid it.

The A league out-rates the Premier League in Australia. Comfortably.

Foxtel would need to lose more than 100k subscribers for not matching Optus' frankly absurd offer to be a wrong move (given $63m p.a. of lower costs relative to what you are saying they should have bid). This will not happen in a million years, they might lose 10-20k at most.

If they bid $1b for NRL & AFL they do it because they know each of them is going to bring in more than that in revenue.

If EPL isn't worth $60m in revenue you just don't bid that much for it. Pretty simple really
The silly thing is Optus could easily earn 60m a year in revenue if they got their head out of their arse and offered a $25/month EPL subscription service via foxtel to the 200k plus EPL fans who already have Foxtel installed. They could then earn streaming rights on top.

Yeah it could see that happen a bit. But there are also many people who turn their noses at the league unfortunately they're not going to just jump on board because there is no EPL on offer they'll just watch another European league.

The ones who will drift away are the people who aren't massive football fans who are mainly sport fans who enjoy the Super Saturday which shows a decent local product leading into the most entertaining international product. Without that 2nd component some of them will drop right off and watch another Fox Sports channel or some other sport like the Big Bash

"While you'll need to be an Optus customer to get all the EPL action, Optus research shows that close to two in three (63 per cent) football fans, who are not already Optus customers, are out of contract for at least one of their fixed broadband or mobile services," Optus managing director of marketing and product Ben White said.

"We're confident that when these fans see our range of great value EPL-ready plans, they'll be convinced that now is the right time to switch."
"What have you got riding on this?"

"My company."

"What a gambler!"

The ratings and churn rate for losing a sport that broadcasts live from 10pm-5am is definitely not going to be worth 60m especially when the competitors cant offer a great service

$25 per month?!

They'd be lucky to get 5k signing up to that.

Yes I never said otherwise, Foxtel and frankly everyone else wasn't to know that Optus would completely balls it up. Foxtel got lucky out of this that it has happened that way and they've been able to bring beIN into the picture and club channels.

And what exactly are they doing for the other 37% who are still under contract? Stiff shit? Or will Optus offer to pay exit charges from contracts so EPL viewers are able to come across to them?

I would consider Optus Yes TV. It is available on any broadband provider. Unfortunately Optus demand you sign a broadband or mobile contract to access EPL which is a no no for me. I'd be open to giving it a go otherwise.

It's crazy that they think the EPL is that big. They way they've gone about it you'd think nearly a 1/4 of the country actually tune in live every weekend!

Of course Optus won't be doing that. They're not spending $60m a season just so they can spend even more money. Stiff shit is precisely it. More people than ever will find 'alternate ways' to view EPL live, or else they'll catch the club shows on Fox and try to avoid catching the results beforehand.

Yep it's insane. Most analysts think BT has shot itself in the foot with what it paid for Premier League and Champions League rights in the UK and that's in the league's home market, where it is easily the most popular sport, the EU has mandated that Sky can't buy all of the rights, and there is a linear offering that anyone can subscribe to!

Can only imagine this is driven out of Singapore and nobody in Australia had the cojones to say "this is not a good idea"

Wonder how bein will broadcast here. Via Sky on tv or just an online platform. I'm hoping it's a bit of both
Probably the same as over here. Either through pay tv or online. Its available here through both fetch & foxtel.

Glad that foxtel didn't go down the Optus path and demand that Bein be limited to telstra Bigpond customers with the new deal.

I feel sorry for any Aussie fans of the newly promoted teams
4/6 of them teams left in the hunt haven't been in the top flight for 8+ years
Imaging having your team finally drag itself back into the premier league, only to have this shit dumped on you and you can't watch their games
