That I don't agree with as much. Companies only bankrupt themselves.
Not to mention, only one company at a time is actually paying. Say Optus went broke from the current deal, the next round of negotiations will likely end up in a cheaper deal knowing they no longer have to compete with a company bidding that highly.

If your key bidders bankrupt themselves then you're damaging the competition and $ on future bidding processes though.
But that's exactly my point, it would make the next round a smaller price, and so on, that means the PL is stiffing themselves out of sustainable long term bidders.

Plus clubs pay players expecting a certain amount of TV revenue contributing to their budget. If that revenue drops by a decent margin worldwide, players aren't going to say pay me less…

Why don't all bidders just work together to keep the prices down? Or would the PL set a reserve for the rights?

It’s great for the PL. Winning bid will most likely pay absolute max a company is willing to pay as if there’s another fierce bidder even if there no such other bidder. Don’t think that max is going to bankrupt though

So why are Optus jacking up the prices if not to recover the cost of the rights?
It's not going to literally bankrupt them but if they don't make a profit on the rights what incentive do they have to bid the same amount next time? And what incentive is there for a competitor to go anywhere near what they paid this time if they know Optus won't bid that next time?
A live auction where bidders can bid and then re-bid if their bid is beaten is surely a better way of driving the price up sustainably.

I assume there'd be a reserve but also, I'd imagine legally they couldn't.

How would that work? You’re bidding against an unknown quantity, just like a blind bid on real estate. They hope to maximise revenue through this process. You get one chance to bid. There is no back and forth. Give it your best shot and hope you win.

Their final successful bid would have been calculated on an increased price charged. ie we charge price A with % profit then we max bid A. If we charge price B etc. Coupled with calc on if they miss the bid. They would have to calc a nice profit otherwise why bid that at all?
Even if they were in an open bidding war with another competitor that $600m they ended up paying would’ve have been the limit they would bid in an open bid. But of course if it was an open bid and next best competitor was only willlingto offer $400m then Optus makes even greater profit and PL misses out on extra $200m. Hence why blind maximises the bid for PL.

Let's see if they get the profit they're after then but I suspect they won't be bidding so much next time which is the entire point I'm making.

One top flight League and numerous 4-yearly international tournaments is a waste of money

They do have all European internationals that are tied to the European league. Which is yearly. But yes acouple more domestic leagues and it's worth it

Will be interesting, I think the deal could work. From what I've seen fox sports has not given a crap about it and been super incontinence with the scheduling. The deal gives every game, with games in multiple languages, and Apple have been doing a nice job with the baseball.
It will probable be harder for new fans to join, but they do already have a strong fan base going to games. The us is also very strong on the subsequent TV market as well.
