Here are some records that can be equaled but never broken.

Fitzroy round 6 1897 v Geelong
Sydney/SM round 3 1898 v Geelong
St Kilda round 13 1898 v Collingwood
Carlton sectional round 2 1898 v Fitzroy
St Kilda round 9 1899 v Essendon
St Kilda sectional round 3 1899 v Geelong
St Kilda sectional round 2 1900 v Melbourne
St Kilda round 9 1915 v Carlton
Fitzroy round 5 1953 v WB/Footscray

All scored 100% of their score in 1 quarter. (3 scoreless quarters)

(St Kilda's score of 2.3-15 in the 1900 sectional match could be 'safe' as the highest score by a team scoring only in 1 quarter.)

St Kilda had Richmond at 2.3 for the first three breaks of the game last time they met. Doesn't count as the Tiges added another 3 in the last but certainly makes this seem possible?

Other relatively safe records:

- highest goals per game avg : Peter Hudson (5.64)

- most goals on debut : John Coleman (12)

- most consecutive games : Jim Stynes (244)

- oldest player : Vic Cumberland (43 yrs 48 days)

You may also be interested to know that there have only been five 100% accurate results - three of which by St Kilda !

okay, two of those were 1.0.6 and the third 3.0.18...
those and Tucks most games by a player

Unless the quarters are lengthened back to what they used to be, I'd say that Geelong's 37.17.239 will never be broken.

Nobody will get near Michael Tuck's 426 games- probably 375 or 380 would be the limit these days.

And I think it's a fair bet nobody will win the flag from last place again.

Well Brent Harvey proved you wrong .. ;-)

One that will fall (again) - Most Possessions: Tom Mitchell 54 2018 vs Collingwood
One that won't - Most Hitouts: Todd Goldstein 80 2015 vs GWS
I think the Goldstein is relatively easy. Get a wet day (lots of stoppages, a team playing a small-ish ruckman like Nankervis, or losing him to injury) and it can happen.
A few years ago Richmond had a huge slow ruckman Andrew Browne who was reported to have got 95 hitouts in the VFL.
Anyway, raw hitouts are a fairly useless stat these days.

The current high congestion style may end up seeing somebody at least challenge Brett Ratten’s clearance record across a season. Ratten ended up having 265 clearances from 26 games in 1999 and nobody else has ever managed to get to 200 in a season. Josh Kennedy has come closest and has had 4 seasons between 180 and 191 in seasons where Sydney has gone deep in the finals and he’s played 24-25 games.

Considering Dane Swan got 48 the other week, and we are constantly seeing possesion records tumble due to the high amount of hand passes and over possessing the football. I would predict that record will fall in the near future... Watson was on target to beat it on Friday night before being injured, with 16 in the first quarter.
not a go at you guys but pretty amusing that 2 of the first 3 other unbreakable records were beaten these last 2 years multiple times

I put both of those down to the same cause: players who get a heap of touches but don't need to be tagged. Mitchell isn't as damaging with 50 touches as a random selection of 50 touches shared among other players. And Boomer near the end was kind of selfish, and burned his team more often than not. Tag him, and he succumbs to injury much quicker and retires two years earlier.

Geelong 23 goals in a row is hard to beat. Dominating a game is easy enough but you need need a lot of luck, Freo had some shots on goal and hit a couple posts etc during the 23 goals.

The difference between good and bad sides is a lot closer then 100 years ago, St Kilda is well and truly stuck with half of these records.

It's very hard to beat - Geelonh only equalled the record. In the Round-Robin finals in 1899, Geelong beat St Kilda 23.21 - 0.1.

Geelong's 186 over the Dees gave the 190 a mighty fright!

It's astonishing that Tuck has played in more wins than probably 99% of players in history have played games. Joel Selwood is only 2/3 of the way there and he'll never surely be able to play until he's about 37 or so to beat it even at his current strike rate.

62 different players played for St Kilda during the 1911 season - with the size of current AFL squads, that record will never be broken.

Of those 62, 12 played their one and only game of League football during that season - I can't see a team in the future having 12 "one-game wonders" playing in the same season.

Hawthorn's record of scoring 41 behinds against St Kilda in 1977 25.41 (191) is safe - it is rare for a team to have 41 scoring shots in a game.

1897-2018, 706 teams have had 41 or more scoring shots in a match - just 2.3% of all scores.
The highest percentage of scores in a season with 41 or more scoring shots has been 11.23% (31/276) in 1982 and 1985.
There were 6 in 2016 (1.45%) but only 1 in 2017 and 2018 - the lowest percentage except for the 33 seasons where there were none (last 2015).

Hawthorn's 66 scoring shots in Round 6 1977 is 6 more than the next most - Carlton 30.30-210 vs Hawthorn in Round 2 1969. It's tally of 41 behinds is also 6 ahead of the next most - Geelong's 22.35-167 vs Melbourne in Round 16 1981.

Here's the breakdown:

Peter Houdini Hudson kicked 7.4
Kelvin Matthews kicked 4.6
Lethal Leigh Matthews kicked 4.5
John Bomber Hendrie kicked 3.4
Alan Goad kicked 2.0
Bernie Jones kicked 1.4
Michael Friar Tuck kicked 1.3
Big Al Martello kicked 1.3
Stuart Trott kicked 1.2
Gerald McCarthy kicked 1.0
Geoff Racehorse Ablett kicked 0.2
Rodney Rocket Eade kicked 0.2
Barry Rowlings kicked 0.2
David Rubber O'Halloran kicked 0.1
David Polkinghorne kicked 0.1

So 15 out of 20 blokes recorded a scoring shot that day, with only Sir Don Scott, Kelvin Moore, Michael Gladys Moncrieff (Playing in defence), Ian General Paton & Peter Woosha Welsh failing to trouble the scoreboard.

That's 25.39 kicked off the boot, with 6 rushed behinds & who knows how many out of bounds on the full.

Michael Tuck's 7 Premiership Cups will likely never be broken.
Really? It's not like he's some wild outlier - there are four players on six.

There's half a dozen current players who have played finals in ten years or more, and with player management and sports science getting better (not to mention the financial incentive) it's quite conceivable that 15 - 20 year careers could be increasingly common, which would put this record under threat.
