Short of getting a confession you would think it would be nigh on impossible getting a conviction for deliberately lighting a bush fire, be so hard to prove.

I guess that's the issue, so hard to find who did it that they're emboldened to continue breaking the law. The fact that people's property, livestock and lives at risk doesn't seem to phase them...that's sounds very sociopathic

There are few things I understand less than firebugs...

I mean, I know pyromaniacs get off on the sight of fire and get off on the act of starting one. But how you could do it on a day when it's very likely to spread rapidly, possibly destroy people's houses and possibly kill people is beyond me.

Half of our bushfires are lit by some nutter, who seems to get off on destroying property and sometimes taking lives.
On the 14th of January 260 fires started in South Australia, all lightning strikes.

Some Maths freak will work out how many deliberately lit bushfires there has been , for your stat to be correct, and not a fear mongering thing.

Lets not underestimate the stupidity of the average bogan. Flicking butts out the window of their car, etc.

Would account for part of the 35% accidental in the stats

I did Crim Psych in the late 80's...so what I am about to retell might not apply these days...

Anyway I remember a lecture on Arson and the tale of a guy who would start fires knowing that the fire trucks would pass by his house for sexual pleasure.

Actually the whole semester was the best course of 3 years....it made me come to the conclusion as an 18 year old that there are truly some messed up people I share air with...

Big difference between Pyro's and firebugs. I'm pretty sure pyromania is one of the rarest mentail conditions going around. Most of the deliberately lit ones would be done by firebugs (assholes).

Off course it does.Little kids try burning insects with magnifying glass.
Makes complete sense, but I guess it was one of those...ah...'seems obvious now but I'd never actually known' things.

One prick has been nabbed

7.06AM: POLICE have arrested and charged an alleged firebug and are seeking another after two fires were believed to be deliberately lit.
A 40-year-old Fawkner man was arrested and charged last night following a fire in Fawkner on Sunday afternoon.

And we were all little angels when we were kids.
Get off your high horse Thrawn.

Never implied that we all were little angels as kids. Can't see how I am on a high horse when I'm only stating the fact that not all of us were little shits growing up. It looked like you were inferring that it was some kind typical thing kids would do on a lazy afternoon. Nonsense, I say. It's good that you grew out of it, but some kids don't, which is why parents should put their foot down and say "no" at such things. Surely you can understand that? If I was caught burning insects alive when I was little, I probably would have gotten the belt to the bum. And rightly so.

The brigade i'm with did frist aid on a firebug.

Burned his leg instead of the dry grass i heard he got off.

Housemate (not a bogan) has started two fires in the balcony ashtray in the last week

No offence to your mate, but I pretty much assume smoker = bogan

I don't think you can narrow it down to anyone thing.

I'd say most "deliberate" fires are started by little shits, who whilst being deadshits don't intend to start a full fledged bushfires it just gets out of hand.

Next would be firebugs that are less obsessed with fire as they are with creating commotion, it's about the excitement for them would most likely have low IQ's and aren't fully aware of what their actions are causing.

Then complete scum that do it with malice this goes from stupidity to dare I say 'evil' they actually enjoy the destruction that's caused.

Next is the thrill seeker or hero that lights fires so they can be part of the effort to 'save'

Finally you have the very rare ones
First those that feel compelled to start fires they literally can not help themselves, most probably don't want to start fires it's a compulsion they struggle to control.

Finally those that do it for sexual gratification actually being aroused by either the fire itself or the panic caused by it.

There could be more I haven't considered.

That Brendan Sokaluk bloke didn't seem the full two bob to me, although the court seemed to think otherwise judging by his sentence.
