I suspected the Fawkner one was deliberately lit.

Good to see they got the guy. That one was only about a kilometre from my house, and also (I think) the one where a tree fell and seriously injured a fireman.

That Brendan Sokaluk bloke didn't seem the full two bob to me, although the court seemed to think otherwise judging by his sentence.

They have to be harsh, you have to be aware that sentencing especially in high profile cases is little more then money and politic's.

His sentence was to set an example.

Fires we've attended this season have been started by an abandoned campfire, lightning, a truck tailshaft, farm machinery (the new generation headers are real campaigners for fires), car exhaust system (taking a mobile call on the side of the road) and one bbq (burnt his chops and wood shed).
Our local firebug was a 14yo mildly autistic kid he got a firemans outfit somewhere then went out and set fire to the neighbors paddock not once but three times in the one afternoon first time we put it out we put it down to a windmill pump bearing, when it reignited we put it down to something we missed, the third time one of the lads spotted him watching from the front yard "geared up" ready to fight the fire. Next time we waited out of sight and caught him red handed, it was the last straw for the family last i heard he was in an institution.
