The names of these two alleged players have been circulating for a while, coincidentally neither will play AFL this weekend.

Two current AFL stars have lost $1 million each on the punt and up to 120 players and coaches have gambling issues, according to a leading counsellor.
Jan Beames, who specialises in helping elite sportspeople fight their gambling addictions, has described the problem in football “an epidemic”.
Two players — one from a Victorian team and the other from an interstate club — have each lost or owe $1 million, she has revealed.

But mental health is still the biggest problem facing our game apparently !!!
Gamble responsibly Gil.

Exactly how can the AFL want to see the end of Pokies

Yet be as happy as a pig in mud when it comes to the betting advertising plastered all over AFL matches and media in general.

The AFL are hypocrites

The AFL are hypocrites
Not like this is the first issue where they are shown to be.

No. 728 and counting. However will blow over due to the short term attention span of supporters who will move to the next headline.

The AFL are hypocrites

Could only laugh at the hypocrisy of Andy Maher one day on SEN last year where he went on about the evils of poker machines and how the AFL must eradicate them from clubs ownership. When queried on his own networks reliance on sports gambling he stuttered away how the experts are telling them that pokies are evil and sports betting is nowhere near that of pokies.

Yeah he maybe right on pure numbers today. But sports betting is very popular with the younger generation and if they continue to allow these companies the access to advertising they do now it won't be long before it hits pokies levels. But i'm sure Andy Maher doesn't give a s**t as it helps pay his wage.

Sportsbetting and Pokies are two different beasts. With education you can make money from sports betting. Pokies are nothing more than a lottery.

Plenty of people have lost massive coin on other investment type activities are we going to call for a ban on those too.

They want the pokies gone so these sick individuals can't be physically seen in the AFL establishments, AFL want them hooked on Sportsbet or beteasy in the comfort of their home

Its sponsorship. Even the kiddies know the odds before a game now, but the players are now constantly bombarded with this crap on weekdays. Id love to see how many of them get gaming credits. Not allowed to have a ciggy before the game, but its much less distracting to lose $200k on the punt

Plenty of other investment activities have been banned in fact to ensure that they do not prey on vulnerable people

Gil and his Mentor Demetriou are so in deep with the gambling companies they have ruined our game.
It is a disgrace. Absolute disgrace.
The game does NOT need gambling company advertising revenue and can easily survive without it.
Greedy crony capitalists have ruined the game.

Beams and Gibbs
At the outset I have no idea who they are. That said, and using my intuition, I have no problem accepting Beams. But Gibbs?
So assuming the correctness of the allegations against Beams and Gibbs let me say this.
Beams is an obvious Bogan who came from a culture where betting was de riguer.
Gibbs, not so.
So with Gibbs we have to ask what is the cause or what are the causes of his addiction?
An addiction to gambling is normally cultural (assume Beams) or psychological, which includes psycho- sexual, (assume Gibbs).
It’s never a Black and White issue.

Gibbs wasn't the only one at Carlton with a gambling issue.
