Sttew came up with this squad of players who have left the club since 2008.

B: Wojcinski - Scarlett - Milburn
HB: Hunt - Egan - Harley
C: Byrnes - Corey - Prismall
HF: Rooke - Ablett - Menzel*
F: Podsiadly - Mooney - Chapman
R: Ottens - Ling - Ablett
Interchange: King - Blake - Laidler - David Johnson
* Yes, Menzel is still on the list, but he hasn't played since 2011 and after 4 knee recos...

Let's compare this with the current side who beat the Crows.

B: A. Mackie, T. Lonergan, T. Hunt
HB: C. Enright, J. Rivers, C. Guthrie
C: J. Bartel, J. Caddy, M. Duncan
HF: J. Murdoch, H. Taylor, J. Selwood
F: MW Brown, T. Hawkins, L. McCarthy
R: H. McIntosh, S. Johnson, M. Stokes
Interchange: J. Kelly, T. Varcoe, D. Simpson, M. Blicavs

Simply, who wins?! This is just a bit of fun so keep it civil and for the purposes of the exercise we'll leave Menzel in the first squad. No tears.
Mods feel free to move or whatever.

It's a bit of a laugh is all. I can start another thread about Chapman/Bomber/Ablett if you like ;)

I think the current side's back line would pants the retirees forward line.
Bartel, Stevie J and Jelwood v Ablett, Ling and Corey would be a pretty close contest.

I think both back lines would smash the forwards. Which is incredible really. To think we've had that many important backs.

But for me the Rucks is where it would be won.
Ottens would win. Ling would stop SJ, and no one would stop Ablett.

Would be a pretty close game I think.

I was expecting a better punchline to "Two Geelong teams walk into an MCG..."

The retirees for mine but their wings are ordinary compared to the current side.

And the current crop, I reckon, have them covered off the interchange.

Ling on Johnson and Scarlett on Hawkins would be fun to watch.

And Enright V a fully fit (ie no recos) Menzel (with more experience) would be interesting.

I don't like the selectors choices in the retirees team, it has too many talls.
I reckon drop Blake & Nablett and bring in (pardon the pun) Vegas & Black Jack.

But if you really wan't three ruckmen, I'd say Mummy and maybe even Westy would be a better choice than Blake.

Blake in the ruck, Ablett at his feet palming off to Ling, who shoots another handball to a racing Byrnes who has Ottens, Maxy, Chappy and Moons lurking in the forward line.

Deep sigh...those were the days my friend, I'd thought they never end...

The team with Chappy wins.

Seriously, with the blistering speed of Wojo, the G&D of the likes of Corey, Rooke & Ling, the sheer class of GAJ, and the likes of Scarlett and Milburn doing as they please in defence, can you go past the Retirees?

Not if you want to win hitouts, then you'd reverse that order you've got.

I can't see a forwardline of Mooney, Pods and Chappy kicking a big score against Harry, Lonergan, Enright, Mackie and Rivers.
I reckon the midfield of the current crop is more balanced over the retirees (Byrnes and Prismall? Pfft both would be KO'd by The Bull Shark) but they do have some serious star power in Ling, Gaz and Corey.
Also the retiree backline would pants the current crop with Egan going to Hawkins.

Now on top of all that is gamestyle, do we take it they would play the style they played in their era? If so the current crop would smash the retirees so I'd presume then style and tactics are out the door.

Also for the sake of argument, shouldn't current injured players who would definitely be best 22 be named? IE Motlop and Bundy?

If they are included I reckon the current crop JUST, if not then I'd go the retirees.

Gee we've had a lot of good players over the last 8 years....
That list is what makes me laugh when people now say we are too old and too slow. Look at the talent we have had leave us and what we have replaced it with and not only are we still relevant in the era of equalisation but we were one kick from a GF appearance.

I say it a lot but really….
