I don't there's nearly as much in it as some are making out.

For lack of specific parameters, I could only really assume every player is at the peak of their powers as known to date (i.e. not extrapolating with the younger chaps).

Top liners/elite/A-graders/etc

Retires: / Current:

Scarlett / Enright
Egan / H. Taylor
Milburn / Bartel
Corey / Johnson
G. Ablett / Selwood
Chapman / Hawkins
Ling / McIntosh
Ottens
King

Almost there:

Retirees: / Current:

Rooke / Lonergan
Mooney / Mackie
Harley / Rivers
Pods / Kelly
/ Varcoe
/ Duncan

The retirees clearly have more top liners, but I think the current mob catch them up for overall numbers when you include the next line. Not a recipe for a 10 goal hiding IMO. In fact if Bundy and Motlop were included, I'd be willing to call it even.

Swap Bundy for the very raw Linc McCarthy and Motlop for an unlucky Murdoch and I'd almost tip today's team. The "retirees" team drops off badly by the time you get to the last few picked. I'd have any of the current mob over Laidler, Byrnes, Prismall and David Johnson.

I reckon you can take Hawkins out of the 'elite' category until his back problems are shown to be fixed. And McIntosh isn't there yet on current performance- or are we talking about at their peak (hopefully his is still to come!)?

Hawkins' 2012 was clearly elite, and if King and Ottens are elite, so is McIntosh. Don't see any problem given the the qualifications I gave my post.

No worries- so elite at the top of their game, then? That makes sense.

(sorry- hadn't read the top of your post properly)
Sorry didn't see this till now. Yeah basing it on the best we've seen from them, so blokes like Hawkins definitely elite, and probably McIntosh too if we're including King and Ottens for the retirees.
