News Two-year contract for Jake Neade

Congrats Neady! One of the few that have visibly improved in 2016. He's been exceptional when our forward line and midfield have functioned properly this year and he's been desperate and serviceable when it has all gone to shit. Happy to see him rewarded with a 2 year deal.

Yeah I'm coming around to the deal.

My first reaction was why 2 instead of 1, but he has been good recently and you can't question his endeavor.

That's more than can be said for some of his mates, who have received a lot more years and presumably coin for not much more output.

Giving Neade 2 years is no different to giving DBJ 2 years ie. players that show promise with under 50 games.

Yeah, but when we are doing so shit, save it til the end of year?

"hey guys, I know we aren't doing very well, but we're still handing out contracts and extensions so don't stress, we haven't forgotten about anyone"

So what's worse, re-signing too many players or constantly having them walk out the door? I know which one I'd pick.

Our culture is obviously great with how easy we re-sign everyone.

Congratulations to a little guy who try's his guts out the majority of the time. Does some great work, tackles like a beast for a small man and actually defends and attacks! Shame a lot of the blokes on our list do not take a leaf out of his book!

Two years is a fair contract. From what I have seen of the young fella he deserves a decent crack.

hear hear

sure we want the best players but we must want the players who play their best for the club even more

2 years is fair,

Its enough where both parties aren't into deep.

Lobbe 4 Hartlett 5, ugh.

Was just thinking about Neadey, seems to be a bit of a forgotten man this year. Can anyone who gets to Magpies games tell me where he is being played? IMO he should become an outside mid/winger type, not a small forward. All of his best games have been when he is given space up the ground to run and bounce- see 2014 finals series.

It's a position we're light on, and would put pressure on the likes of Impey, Amon and Polec to perform. Disposal is far better than Impey's, and he applies better defensive pressure than Amon, so he has a niche there if he can take it.

We've got him until 2018, so may as well give him a fair crack at it.

Forward flank. Did pretty well last game, got 12 tackles and his pressure acts were good.

Just needs to get more of the ball, use it better and hit the scoreboard.

Oh is that all?

I could play AFL if I could get more of the ball, use it better and hit the scoreboard.

Neade doesn't need a lot of possessions to be damaging, but he sure as hell needs to get more than he currently is. At his best he's a sublimely skilled, dangerous, goalkicking small forward. At his worst he's very nearly invisible.

This is his 4th year on our list and his deficiencies don't seem to be disappearing. Time is on his side with his contract, but he'd want to work hard or his time will run out.

5th year. And contracted for one more.

Where do we reckon he is on the small/crumbing forward depth chart at the moment?

1. R. Gray
2. S. Gray
3. J. Impey
4. A. Young
5. A. Johnson
6. A. Monfries
7. J. Neade

Hmm.

Would probably have Robbie Young ahead of Neade.

I want to like him, I really really do. But he makes it hard. Reckon Krak is probably ahead of him aswell if he didn't go and injure himself. So that leaves Neade in probably our bottom 5 players on the list currently. And he's got another year and a half with us.

The issue with Neade is that his game has not evolved since his rookie season.

He's gotten better at what he's already good at, which is forward pressure, tackling and perhaps he is kicking more goals.

But he has not elevated in other areas of his game. Can't just play one position in the AFL anymore unless you are elite at it. There's no midfield game, no outside/running game.
