Thought this would be a bit of fun. I am going to go back of a number of years and see who Cal Twomey thought your club would take in the top 30.

In hindsight would you be happy with the group Twomey selected for you, or do you think your actual draft halls were better?

Mathieson over Alex Morgan is… well at least we’d still have him. But the impact that may have had on Parish (they were mates and apparently deliberately separated) might not make the difference.

Not sure who Venables is in lieu of?

Bruhn and Henry is too soon to tell, but I like Cox and Perkins pretty well at this stage.

The rest are the same.

Not looking at who Twomey “selected” v who we actually selected, because often it’s about who actually made it to our pick, and just who right was Twomey’s information.

2016, for example, we actually wanted Ridley, but he went the pick before.

My biggest gripe on the Lions board in regards to the draft and list management, is that our pick trading generally sucks. Sometimes it’s the other team we trade with, sometimes it’s the actual trade, and where the new picks we receive are situated. Sometimes it’s about the future draft we’re trading in to.

Yes I should have stated in the original post that if Twomey was a recruiter for a specific club he may not have selected who he picked on the phantom draft as in the phantom draft he is only picking the player he thinks the club itself will pick, not the player he thinks they should pick. This thread is more of a what if in terms of what clubs would benefit if every pick Twomey said would happen did happen.

They are basically the same as they either tell him or he deduces it from asking player managers who has interviewed what player recently.
Another interesting question is how good would Twomeys mock drafts be if he didn't work for the AFL. Not as good I would say.

So much this. Changed his selections on before the draft no doubt based on new info, which is fine, but I'd prefer the selections be 'locked' 24 hours before to avoid inside info shenanigans.

Would've been glad to get Ridley and Rivers, but Ridley went before our pick and Robertson was a good pick also. Very glad we went with Starcevich over Lachie Fogarty. Kind of a wash really.

Bit of a non-event issue for GWS. With all of our academy kids, it's pretty straightforward for a lot of picks - although he inexplicably didn't link Harry Himmelberg to us according to your list. For the open draft pool selections, while our recruiters have had a few misses (Bonar, Hately, Caldwell), none of Twomey's selections were any better, and he also missed some gems that our recruiters did select (Taylor, and to a lesser extent Daniels). The recent couple of drafts are obviously too early to tell.

Bottom line, he's certainly no better than our recruiters, and I wouldn't prefer his list to who we selected.

We could of had Robertson & Rivers.

But we traded our first round pick in to the next draft, which was thought to be a weaker draft.

As I’ve often said, our pick trading really sucks.

I found this really interesting, and I think there are other layers to list management worth delving into.

This year we were destined to lose one of our best young players in Cerra. Potentially a devastating blow. But the club's list management mustered an A-grade response.

The superficial outcome was a trade of pick 6(8) from Carlton along with some minor late pick balancing. That pick 6 enabled the drafting of Amiss or Erasmus depending on availability at our existing draft pick.

Cerra was set for an outsized salary increase to $750k per year, and with him leaving the availability of that salary cap became critical in what happened next.
  • an offer and trade for Clark from Geelong was organised using some of the salary cap and a trade of pick 24.
  • a trade with GCSs for pick 21 and Will Brodie was completed, essentially providing them with around $300k in salary cap relief for a year. That pick becomes Johnson.
Cerra leaving enabled the acquisition of Clark, Amiss/Erasmus, and Johnson.

A critical factor for non Victorian clubs is having a balance of non-Victorians in the squad, and this draft has meant the club is less vulnerable to player loss from the go home factor, along with the additional outlay on salary sometimes required to retain interstate players.

Cerra is a proven commodity. The acquisitions are always a wait and see. Draftees are like new toys for supporters. For years, the only thing Melbourne supporters got excited about was draft night. The new toys were never as good as they seemed.

We've had a change of recruiter in the last few years, but I'd keep our picks.

I love watching Day and DGB is going to be an all-time favourite.

Yes of course and I'm not saying we win the trade or anything like that, although I am confident Clark becomes best 22, and at the least, Brodie will be good cover for Fyfe. I am highlighting that a list management does significantly more than Twomey doing a phantom draft, most of which is a distillation of intel he has gleaned from clubs, agents, players and the like as opposed to talent identification and list needs.

In the example I gave I highlighted a much deeper understanding of what a recruiting team considers and how they position themselves.

It’s not where Twomey allocated them based upon his own assessment, but where he thinks the recruiting agents would select these kids. So it’s pretty much a pole smoking exercise for Twomey, and he must’ve smoked the pole well this year because he got something like 12/12.
