Traded Tylar Young [Traded to West Coast for Pick #38]

There are two groups of Eagles fans come trade time.

The "Bed Wetters" who complaign about every trade and think the club should shaft otther teams every single trade.

And there are other fans who accept swings and round about occur, getting a deal done and getting your target is more important than winning every single trade. And picks above 25 arent worth losing sleep over if you pay a bit more and keep trade relationships healthy with managers, players and clubs.

This is a shit binary. The same people that say that picks after 25 don't matter are the ones that think getting pick 46 from Port was some kind of masterstroke. It's not just "bed wetter" WC fans that think WC are pushovers. General rule of trade week is that if fans of team A and team B are roughly at the same level of liking/hating a trade then it is probably about fair for both parties. If fans of team C, D, E, F... all say the same thing then there's usually something to that.

Who gives a shit about healthy relationships with managers, players and clubs when you are anchored to the bottom? You reckon Andrew Mackie is going to lose any sleep if Sam Power doesn't send him a Christmas card? His team just played in the GF and the player he got for pick 17 came third in the Brownlow.

The list manager's job is to make the list better. You need to make the most of what you have and other than drafting Harley Reid (consensus pick 1 goes to team with pick 1, more at 5) it's hard to make the case that WC have done that for quite a while. Going into trade week with Tom Barrass and pick 3 in a highly rated draft then walking out with Liam Baker and pick 16 in that draft isn't good list management however you want to spin it. Eventually we won't be so shit that we have a top 5 pick each year and leverage in bringing in OOC players that comes with being at the bottom. If you are going to overpay for Tim Kelly because "Freo might take him in the PSD" (was never going to happen) then the expectation is that when it is your turn to have leverage you might actually use it, even just once.

Anyway I hope Young is a good player for us, but I find it hard to believe any other club would've traded a pick in the 30s to get him. I'm more than happy not to "win" every single trade if we win games, but currently we're not winning anything.

On talent in this draft class I don’t think it is that bad, but when you look at the leverage west coast had, as well as the surrounding picks, you struggle to see why we couldn’t just send 41. That’s not to say that a 3 pick difference really matters but it’s the precedent we’ve set now over the last 2 off seasons and the principle that is the issue. We are now a team that is happy to budge and give what is wanted. Would never in a million years see clubs like Brisbane, Geelong, Hawthorn etc. give up 38 when 41 is right there.

Half the reason I think they would’ve wanted to trade that instead of our picks in the 30s is just fan reaction. We threw in an extra f3 to move Ryan for no reason, accepted pick 41 for a former first round pick in Chesser, gave up 3 last year and ended up with Baker + Bo + Gross (which I rate but it’s still an overpay).

Like I said death by 1000 cuts, especially for fan sentiment. When you are never seen to come out on top on ANY deal, it starts to turn rotten. Old mate was talking about swings and roundabouts earlier, but we’re yet to perceive a trade being in our benefit. Another fella on here was talking about west coast fans obsessing over trying to win every trade, but it’s ANY trade right now. Just one.
I actually think some clubs are valuing the relationship side of trading, they have to work with each other every year.

Richmond in last decade or so have been pretty good at acquiring who we want, we pay fair value, and we've got our players to where they want to go when trade requests come with our players that want to leave.

Maybe you've looked after us in recent times, but maybe that will come back and benefit you when it comes around to getting value from Richmond if one of your players left.

Clubs don't need to have a hard win every deal, the end goal is to acquire the players you want and get something back you want when players leave, a few picks each way here and there I think are less important than being a club that can make trades happen.

There's obviously a common sense limit to that, but it isn't a few picks difference in the 30s like Bigfooty would argue about.

No other way to spin this
27 year old rookie listed player with only 35 games and 10 good games to his name
Also coming off a serious Knee injury and uncontracted
selecting the bottom team with PSD option available

Pick #58 should have been the take it or leave it offer from the eagles
No idea why they could have used #38 plus their other picks to up grade their other picks

Crazy

On average Pick 38 plays 50 odd games according to draft guru. https://www.draftguru.com.au/picks
Some picks, such as 40, ave 93 games, are artificially inflated due to the old FS picks. ( 40 has Ablett Jnr, Josh Kennedy and Jobe Watson for example. So not a lot to give up based on that.

Young has played 7 solid games since coming back from his ACL and performed well according to stats. https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/T/Tylar_Young.html#20250
Will Ashcroft did his ACL in his first season. Also with McQualter having formally coached Young he knows him.

And West Coast being so bad for 5 years I think the trade is worth the risk for sure.
I know he is 27 years old, but he started late he seems much younger than that, and I feel he is at the peak age of his powers as Key position player.

Not too often do you see players come back from an ACL at that age and actually look better after it than before it. I know (small sample size), this probably shows a lot about his professionalism with how his rehab went.

Yep I agree, he even looks a lot younger than 27. I rate him.
There are a few who had major surgery well into their career and bounced back better. Not ACL but totally screwed knee est example, Shawn Burgoyne had his knee operation at 27. 250 games, 2 AA squads and three premiership medals later.
Then the sad example of never being the same is David Schwartz. After his 1994 season id say he was the Second best centre half forward I’ve seen. But he never got back close after 3 knee ops.
