I still think we made a mistake with him after he injured his foot (leg?)
We should have organised a fitness plan. Sent him to America, had him spend a few weeks working his butt off.
He should be just returning now, to watch the AFL finals and see what it takes. Experience the buzz etc..

He than has a break, and heads back into a big fitness program before preseason starts. By the time we return he's absolutely ripped and frothing to play.

Instead he is brought straight back in, is clearly unfit and contributes nothing.

Thilthorpe actually benefitted from his time out injured. The time was used to build bulk in his body and it helped fast track him. We could have done the same with Tyler.
You seem to be ignoring the fact that Burgess laughed about how hard he'd been flogging Welsh in his rehabilitation.
Indeed, he has got rid of the pot belly and looks a lot trimmer.

Unfortunately, he is now playing against men and no longer dominating physically. He is way back in the pack and may be a bust. However, it costs little to keep developing him for a while and seeing if any skills remain in this period.

The true father-son draft pick is when you engage in medical malpractice to reproduce the chronic osteitis pubis that afflicted the father.

We seem to start our young players on the structure and team responsibility stuff very early

Do other clubs let them be kids for a bit longer? Let them play on instinct, hunt the footy, live with their flaws. Put them in roles that let them freelance a bit. Let them show their strengths.

Then a bit later start adding the discipline, team plans, structure elements, work on their weaknesses.

Maybe just my perception.

Some kids I imagine can cope with the complexities of learning game plans earlier than others, withoutit negatively impacting their play. For some it seems to overload them.
It definitely seems that way

I think what is more likely, is that we just don't hear about the Tyler Welsh equivalents at other clubs. We know all about Tyler Welsh and his challenges this year because we're die-hard Crows fans. But the players we know about at other clubs are mostly the ones who already have things worked out well enough to be playing at AFL level.

Most supporters from other clubs probably have no idea who Tyler Welsh is, but they would look at our forward line and say "the Crows sure know how to develop key forwards!"

Talking more about young players in general

Welsh was a Pick 70? tall forward, so at long odds no matter what approach is used

Club has delisted him and will be picking him back up as a rookie. It’s a tough gig, this AFL business
Not the end of the road for him but you'd reckon it makes the next 12 months make or break.

Surely this puts to bed the stupid theory that he didn't go 100% in his draft year so the club didn't have to match a high bid.

There is no way the club would have asked him to do that.
People have incredible imaginations

Makes sense to re-rookie, but if a project player and is unlikely to challenge for a game in 2026

Wonder if we have a DFA in mind ?

I'm surprised we're allowed to do that, given that it's only one year after he was drafted. Presumably he was on a two-year contract. Are you allowed to delist someone mid-contract as long as you commit to taking them in the rookie draft if still available?
Clubs have been doing this for a few years now

You can do it but still have to pay them. You dont even have to re-rookie them i think

Can delist anyone you want, regardless of contract. Only issue is if you don’t pick them back up then the balance of the contract needs to be paid out in that year’s cap.

Waste of time rookie listing him again. He will NEVER play an AFL game or even be in a discussion in being up for selction. Great as under age player but just a typical man child. Just not up to it. Better of cutting him loose and drafting a rookie that will and can make a difference.
