Typical Cornes!!!!

Sorry relapse but the term Champion should only be reserved to those that not only are great players but in the way they conduct themselves on and off the field. One C Cornes lets himself down severely in the second part.

I wonder if Chad would have been a champion in your eyes had his father seen out his final year of his contract with the Crows in the early nineties........

Can't agree.

Cornes is a champion footballer. Period. His demeanor, or the way he behaves on the field has nothing to do with his footballing abilities. Off the field behaviour even less...

By your reckoning Carey, Ablett, Matthews and Lockett aren't champions either?

Carey - yes a champion, arrogant but able to back it up. I take it you are talking about his off-field indiscretion of which I personally think that the other party needs to be held just as accountable and hasn't.

Ablett - during his playing career he was a champion, there have been serious issues afterwards.

Matthews - A brilliant player but ask Neville Bruns what he thinks about him. He seems to have mellowed in his old age.

Lockett - again a brilliant player but ruined by his indiscretions on the field of which he himself has admitted.

His off field stuff isn't really relevant. I was more talking about his infamous on field demeanor.

In his prime he made Cornes look like the Patron Saint of Humility.

Ablett - during his playing career he was a champion, there have been serious issues afterwards.
Sure. He also did some shockingly dirty things on the football field.

Matthews - A brilliant player but ask Neville Bruns what he thinks about him. He seems to have mellowed in his old age.
He was a brute. He committed outright assault on occasions.

Lockett - again a brilliant player but ruined by his indiscretions on the field of which he himself has admitted.
So the greatest goalkicker the game has ever seen isn't a Champion footballer?

All of these guys are champions of the game. Legends of the game. To not include them in this bracket because they happen to offend some sensibility you hold dear is incredibly unfair.

I don't see how one can include behavioral matters when judging wether or not a player is a champion footballer, especially considering the subjectivity of it all. I guess Champion footballers aren't always Champion people.

and as a side note - how many times have you spoken to Chad away from football? If you haven't had the pleasure I can tell you he is actually quite reserved and shy, and nothing but polite and a gentleman. Much like his father actually.

Damn i was willing to concede your dual premiership captain, Mark Bickley as an inspirational leader and a bloody good footballer, but after what he did to Darryl Wakelin a few years ago in that Showdown, hes now reverted back to a talentless hack who deserves no credit for anything.

Ah well, thems the breaks.

and I thought Wakelins had a pretty good year.

Cornes also attempted to stamp on VB's feet at a ball up 55m out from the Southern End in the third quarter.

He spent most of the game whinging to the umpires.

He couldn't handle having an opponent. The man is so easy to dislike.

Yep, Chad was just pist off that he couldn't get his usual dose of cheap kicks he gets running around like an unregistered dog.

Stupid coaching not to push him to FF to use his height/weights to advantage.

Chad Cornes is a very, very good player. Champion? Get your hand off it. That is a term that should be reserved for like 5 or 6 players in an era.

I can't agree with that. Are you saying that someone can only be a champion footballer if they conduct themselves on and off the field according to very subjective criteria? There is no correlation between football ability and a persons behaviour.

Don't get me wrong, I think Chad's a complete knob (maybe an ever bigger arrogant tosser than Tredrea - although that is bloody diificult), but he's a very good footballer and if he played for the Crows we'd all love his arrogance. Champion - not yet, and probably never. The word champion is very loosely bandied around and as Vic Crow said it should only apply to a select few in an era. However, don't confuse football ability and personal conduct.

a good footballer, maybe even a nice bloke off the field, but i have to say that i've been watching footy since 1958 and he is the biggest on field w***er i've ever seen

So Nikki, of the 4, only Carey is worthy of the champpion tag. Now, which one of those 4 was it that played for the Crows again...

Missed the bit where I said that Ablett was one? For him his issues after football are related to drug abuse and depression which are serious.

Can honestly say that yes I consider Carey a champion of the game, had arrogance and was able to back it up BUT I for one would not interested in having a 'chat' with him now. Matthews I would love to talk to for his coaching experience and knowledge of the game, but during his playing career he has tarnished his reputation in my mind.

Only one thing is for sure in my mind, Chad Cornes should never, ever, be mentioned as being in the same category as Carey, Matthews, Locket or Ablett. They are IMO the special talents of their era's, Cornes is just a pretty good player in comparison.

This i agree with

But i also would be the first in line to give him a Crows jumper if that was at all possible.
