The guy is a complete snake in the grass. One of my friends used to be a carpet salesperson and when ever he put samples out to help sell his product, Pickers at the time an opposing carpet rep would remove them. not only has [Pickering] burned his partner he also reduced the choice of those people making a big decision on buying a carpet. Hope slime ball has the karma coming to him he deserves.

Peed m'self.
Gold.

What business are you in ;)
Heh. Used to be in the family business, and before that worked at Dick Smith. I was deemed trustworthy enough in both roles to do the banking.

And Pickering continues to get jobs in the media, commenting on players, which is a clear conflict of interest..... not that he is the only person in the AFL who has a conflict of interest. There is a multitude of media commentators who have "coaching" roles at clubs.

It seems that Eddie is the only person who has ever been called out for having a conflict of interest in calling collingwood games. If I remember correctly, Pickering has recently been commentating on TAC football. How in the world can that be ethical? Does he say to the kids, "if you sign with me, I'll promote you in my call"

I said over a year ago that this guy makes my skin crawl. Someone earlier said he was a carpet salesman and then he went on to talk about his unethical actions. For me, he could have stopped at informing me that he was a carpet salesman. It's like saying someone is a paedophile, there's not much reason to give details.

Whilst the outrage is warranted, I am barely interested in these stories because this behaviour is precisely what makes privileged individuals rich and then richer. The fact is that this is but one instance where a person in a privileged position has been caught out for $90,000 for 2 months of "work".

It shows how much money is actually being washed around between these legalised crooks.

I am a conservative voter but this is not "work", it is not money earned, it is just the type of behaviour which displays a clear lack of transparency and all that is wrong with today's society.

Playing devil's advocate here ...

How is it different to receiving dividends from investments? No work is performed? The money is not "earned" as such?

For player managers, instead of getting a return of investment from money, they're getting a return of investment from time - time invested signing up "the next big thing" and they'll be lucky if one in ten gives them a decent payday.

And they have to deal with stupid players (Carlisle), stupid footy clubs (Brisbane) and the wrath of fans (Connors over Daisy and Freeman)

Tough way to earn a dime IMHO.

I think there's only one way we can find out.... Have a spare 90k?
If you'd asked me a couple of months ago I'd have said yes, but settlement just went through on a house I just bought, so I don't have access to the cash anymore :(

The opportunity to invest on the stock market is open for all. It is a free-market. This $90,000 that has been received over a 60 day period is not an opportunity available to all.

I have no problem with someone making money (even heaps of money) from making wise decisions or through to working their arse off. There are so many industries that are much more heavily regulated than player management which imo is not equitable. Does the fact that a management company can potentially receive annually $540,000 from the management of one player seem at all inequitable to you?

Perhaps I am being precious.

The matters concerning stupid players, stupid footy clubs and wrath of fans comes with the territory as a negative. There are negatives with every job which makes that job tough.

Pendlebury would have been making a minimum of $3 million per annum (and much more likely $5 million) to have generated that commission for Pickers.
(think your extrapolated number is incorrect)

If Pickers had sourced and negotiated Pendlebury deals to make him several million dollars, then he is acting as a super agent and business partner.

Inequitable?

Inequitable versus the rest of society.

Surely Pendlebury would have mostly attracted payment of those figures because of Pendlebury's talent and character, and less the impact of a player manager?

These new player managers make Peter Jess and David Alison look like angles.

The point is that Pickering is still taking money even though he is no longer Pendlebury's manager, no?

Correct. The question isn't whether Pickering earned his money whilst managing Pendles, it's why is he still taking money from him when he is no longer his manager.

Hi Christ_JM,

1 Agree, social equity and income discussion is worthwhile (but too big a question for here).

2 Agree, payment is mostly deserved by Pendles, hence why he only pays away minority percentage to his agent.

Sidebar: I consult to one of the NRL clubs and they value the 365 day role the player agents have in keeping players on track. The good agents are part parent, financial adviser, drug counsellor, relationship counsellor, and career adviser. No extra payments for any of that.

Cheers :)

Huh? Pendlebury would get about 1 mil give or take a couple hundred thousand for his playing contract of which his manager gets 2-4%.

But for endorsements he gets 20% but I don't think he gets millions for endorsements... maybe all up in total what Pendlebury pays his manager is about 90k (which is a shitload).
