Predictable results from round one: Xavs pumped Kevins, De la easily beat Uni Blacks, and Bernards had a comfortable win. The Marcellin/Rupo game must have been a beauty. Shapes as a good year.

see bernards have a few new blokes on board this year, judda, obby, tommy and patty. all good blokes and very hard at it..

not sure how they will handle the no after game entertainment from what they are used to. may have to venture back to buckley park to the green container or partner up with ex coach at the home of the ashes,,,,lol

funny how one of them had to leave his old club so he could play up forward.....bernards will work him out and realise he is the best full back going around...

Fairly difficult tipping round other than the two easy wins for last years grand finalists.

DLS over SKOB
XAVS over CAREY
BERNARDS over UNI BLUES
MARCELLIN over SCOTCH
UNI BLACKS over RUPO

last 3 games could all go either way.

St Bernards to beat Old carey by 15 points
De la >>>>> Blacks by 50 points
Scoth over Blues by 17 points
Marcellin drawing with Rupo
Skevs narrowly accounting for Xavs.

Bit of a change up for you.

hahah they missed by 20 goals

i'd suggest xavs will smash it up this year and won't lose a game

haha yeah bit off... De La should give xavs a run for their money.

Xavier had a full strength side on the weekend however - cant see mercuri, danniher, williams, ryan, etc all playing in the same side this year too often.

Beware the sleeping giant....... DE LA SALLE...... missing 9 first choice players and still winning by 10 goals scary thought. very young squad as well so can only get better IMO.

Mav's lock of the year: Adam D Kovarik with the coleman, great first up return of 7 big ones.

Lets no get ahead of ourselves this early in the season, I know first hand that De La have got a very good side, but do not underestimate Xavs (quality side and have been for years) also STB and Marcelin.

Round 1 a little bit early to be counting chickens

agreed. way to early to be making any rash calls - i'd say de la, as well as bernies, blues & scotch all would have to be rated as highly as xavs atm.

also it wasn't a full strength xavs side on saturday but was pretty close to, and possibly with the exception of jake williams these guys will be playing in the same side most of the year...

Old Xavs loathe playing U/19s in the senior side. Very few graduates of the last few U/19s sides are playing 1sts now, let alone pulling kids out of this year's U/19s. Benson, last year's leading goalkicker in U/19 by a fair way, struggles to get a game in the 2nds FFS. You could count on one hand the number of players from last year's U/19 GF side who will play 1sts football this year.

That core that you named there will likely be playing for the whole year.

De La are hardly the sleeping giant, they won the flag last year. Agree that Kovarik is in for a big year.

Ive wondered about this before, and to me you can put it down to sheer arrogance. Perhaps a few more young talents could have got their seniors over the line last year. But thats a story for another thread.

Also interesting to see people think the comp will be alot more even this year ? Logic says at this stage that perhaps Bernards is the only team who could get close to upsetting another XAV-DELA grand final.

I'd have wonder about the validity of this theory, but instead ill just put it down to you being an idiot after that comment.
Having the senior 1's in the GF last year - a team built on YEARS of being top of A division - doesn't really warrant room for guys 1 or 2 years out of school playing... Only need to look at players from previous-team's progress to find an answer; most pertinent example at the moment is Alex Ross - arguably the only guy from last year's 19s good enough to play at this stage, and even he's magoo-ing it up so far...

Just my opinion, but that's an absurd call rainman: just stick to doing your job so we can all hose down our driveways again, without the constant fear of being reported to the water-police by the fuddy-duddies next door!!!:D

This week I'm going to tip:
Bellars, OX, Bernies, Scotchies (watch these guys), Rupo.

Cheers.

Well De La Salle didn't have much of a problem downing St Kev's by 19-13-127 to 7-9-51 tonight. De La were woeful in the first quarter, but came back well with the wind to take the second. By the fourth quarter skevs were pretty much run out apart from a few guys who kept trying. On-field discipline let them down badly. With the wind, De La banged through nine goals in the last to seal the deal.

Tigernuts

VERY generous scoreboard. 2.2 to 0.1 in the first quarter to skevs wasn't it? and only three goals in it at 3qtr time after de la kicked the last two of the qtr?
Agreed the last quarter was a formality with a BIG wind to de la, who were deserved winners, but skevs definately took it to them and deserve a fair bit of credit.
Big t-rex, the full forward and leading goal kicker last year, didn't even kick one! so on their day can take it to anyone me thinks...

cheers.

With St Bedes winning their first game by 110 points and yesterdays game by over 120 points against last years premiers what do you reckon their chances would be of maybe going up into 19s premier and how would reckon they would compete if they did go up? They did beat De La Salle in a practise match winning by 7 goals

Chances probably aren't great considering we're already going in to round 3 of a comp with 9 games (x 2).
But if they did come up i'd wager they'd have a decent crack, probably not finish in top 4 and it would be an effectively pointless exercise. (i wouldn't take much from the de la game) Despite big wins, at this stage St Bedes have only outscored xavs by 7 pts, and de la by 60 against an undoubtedly far-poorer opponent. Probably would have to SPANK beauy or OM's before it was considered I reckon.
Also, their movement up would depend upon next year's expectation as well - hence why some years even the premiers haven't gone up! VAFA wont just move a team up who is killing it in one year, but then will just get pants'd and relegated the following year...

Conclusion out of 10: somewhere between 0 and 2.

But Lord knows stranger things have happened!
