I thought this thread was bumped because of that new privacy thing. People are kicking up a stink because the Uber app no longer gives you the option to only allow location data "while using"; it's now "always" or "none". And of course if you select "none" then the app won't function. I'm not so much of a cynic to stop using Uber just because of this, tbh I really have nothing to hide, but the chance of a data breach is always a very real possibility and that's when things can get ugly.

A bit invasive like Big Brother watching you.
Unlike all Taxis in Nsw, Uber drivers do not undergo the same medical or criminal history checks or driver training programs.

All Taxis in Nsw are fitted with surveillance cameras also gps tracking which increases passenger and driver safety by having all drivers performance stringently monitored with alarms being immediately sent to Taxi Operators if a driver speeds, fast acceleration, harsh cornering etc. All Taxis have emergency alarms fitted.

I can't see Uber ever competing with the Taxi Companies the drivers really seem to have the really short end of the stick and the burden the majority of the risk.

My partner and I are both provided with an $ 80,000 dollars wheelchair accessible taxi for five shifts of 60 hours each week.

We do.not pay a things petrol, gas, diesel, vehicle, insurance, gst, uniform etc is.all provided free. If our vehicle is not operational we are immediately provided with another vehicle to drive.

The company I work for are striving for continuous improvement and I feel the introduction of Uber has defiantly made the Taxi Industry pick up its act. Healthy competition in the Taxi industry is good thing for both customers and drivers alike.

Apps getting permission to information they don't need to in order to fulfill the purpose of the app to the customer?

Should be an entire thread on that.
I don't know a great deal about Uber but I don't think ride sharing is anywhere near its core business it is just the beginning of us becoming a fatter race by being able to sit in our lounge chairs, office anywhere and order anything we want via Uber by simply ordering from their app.

Uber ride sharing I feel will always have a small part in the market but the negatives for the drivers will never see it becoming a major player.

Uber is a major player already. Wake up.

The surveillance thing is bullshit and reactionary. Uber has visible route tracking to the passenger and a cashless system meaning robberies are less likely to occur. Crime in an Uber is not going to be any different to crime in a taxi. Uber also has the associated phone number, name and credit card of at least one passenger per trip - easier to find a perpetrator should there be a crime.

Uber is the way forward, taxis have only started to pickup their act because of them. They're much cheaper and mostly a much more pleasant ride.

So taxis have all these special security things in place yet taxi drivers are more often than not the creepy, weird ones who you feel are more likely to kidnap you. There are GPS systems in Ubers too btw, via their mobile.

I don't think the drivers really give a toss about uniform etc etc, it's just a chance for them to make some extra cash on the side of their current jobs.

Pretty much everyone I know uses Ubers over Taxis firstly except when there is either a. too many people for 1 uber so we try a maxi taxi (which often we get rejected for - so use Uber) or b. uber is surging and theres a cab 50m away.

No offence but I think you mentioned you live in a country town, it's a bit of a different situation to city living where the majority of people do live

Weird thing to say. It might be called convenience I think. Microwaves and Drive Thru's at Maccas (or fast food in general) also may have been the beginning of the fatter race, but here we are in 2016.

To be fair I did have my first average experience in an uber on the weekend, was 3am and I wasn't paying much attention and the driver tried to pull a dodgy and miss a few turns. Cop it I guess though, usually they're too over friendly.

It's a pity the taxi service is still years behind Uber and don't ever look like catching up. Uber came in with instant app accessibility that allowed you to see where cars are and give you driver details etc, 13CABS app is a piece of shit and all the cabbies now are stinking up the joint because there is a much better service available and they know it.

What is the uber app?
I dunno maybe the one that is called Uber and is developed by Uber....:drunk:

You could download them all until you find the right one then delete them all and it would still be easier than catching a cab.

I've started using Uber and just about all the drivers have disclosed times were tough for one reason or another.

I always tip as the charge seems too low to cover the full costs of running a car

It's too low to run the costs of operating the company too.

There is a long play underway with Uber.

I don't mind tipping hospo workers, pizza delivery guys etc. But being an Uber driver is voluntary. Times are tough? Stop being an Uber driver then and find something else

where ever you go in life, you have to have "fair" dealings. This isn't a one size fits all rule.

i.e. Teenagers should rarely tip if ever.....etc

I believe they ran at a $2,000,000,000 loss last year.

ouch

it will be interesting to see how quickly they can get into the black

Historically with this sort of thing the pioneering company goes under then someone else picks up the model, tweaks it a bit and makes a killing.

You left it too late, you had a monopoly on the country and you ****ed us time and time again. The taxi industry deserves everything it gets. Uber is monitored better than taxis because uber gets direct feedback straight after a trip from the passenger.
