The current offside interpretation is genuinely insane. What's the rationale behind it? The technology exists so it must be used? It's like watching someone make up a line of best fit on a graph in real time. The line might represent some sort of trend from one perspective and be complete bullshit from another. It's farcical.

Not sure what you mean? The line itself is measured precisely through a number of calculations. The only possible debate is what frame to use in judging it.
 
Would it be worth having an “umpires call” type leniency? EPL seems to be doing that quite a lot with penalty calls but with offside there are always a few that you can never be certain with. Give the benefit of the doubt to the linesman for the 50/50s and only overturn it when it’s clear cut.

But what is their call? Linesman are told to keep their flag down to let VAR check.

Yeah that’s the issue. Technology creates uncertainty for the field umpires. Even if they weren’t told specifically to let the VAR check, it would still in the back of their mind. Same thing happens in other sports, they start hesitating and second guessing themselves.. Ashes series this year is a perfect example. Just lowers the overall quality of umpires. Don’t know if there’s any full proof way around it other than to make offsides fully automated.. which sounds ridiculous, but I’m of the opinion that it either has to be one or the other. Full tech or no tech at all. They just don’t seem to work hand in hand, in any sport.

Which should be a massive debate considering they are measuring the players' positions it down to the milimetre despite the fact you can't be sure that the frame they pick to draw the lines is even the right frame. One frame earlier or later and the ruling might be different

Of course. But the debate isn't how they draw the line.
 
Heard an interesting theory that rather than using quicker frame rates on offsides they should slower ones.

Use the frame when the ball has left the foot. Gives a bit more benefit of the doubt to the attacker.

Currently the defensive team is advantaged on tight offside calls.

They used the wrong frame to disallow Promes' goal. The pic on the left looks like the one that should've been used. The one they did use seems to be the one where the ball is nowhere near Ziyech's foot anymore. That just seems like a really bad mistake.



I'm still very much in favour of VAR though. The system itself is great. The way it's used will improve in the next few seasons.

I agree with moomba that the benefit of the doubt should go to the attacker. Even further than that, this whole thing where some body part is centimeters offside doesn't contribute to the game at all. You have to go back to the reason why offside was introduced in the first place --> to avoid attackers standing next to the opponent's goalie all game. There should be better ways, even though they'd be harder to implement.

That angle is deceiving though. Even with the left hand shot you could still argue his torso is in front of Zoumas leg by following the pitch lines through. That being said.. there probably isn’t enough there to overturn a call.

Ajax fans banned from attending our game at the Bridge.

Leyton orient have pushed their Leasing.com Trophy match against Brighton & Hove Albion U21s back 24 hours too as theres fears the fans would attend that game instead. There is 2000 Ajax fans still heading to London.
