Half Time - Steaua Bucharest 0 Southampton 0

I'm having to follow the game via livescore and the saintsforever message boards which is bloody frustrating, although the actual score and flow of the game is even more of a concern. The equation is pretty simple, a goal is all we need (provided they don't score). It is pouring with rain in Bucharest and they seem to have had the better of the half. Kevin Phillips missed a one on one with the keeper late in the half which could prove to be the crucial moment of the game.

Currently I'm very tired and just filling in a bit of time before the second half starts. Looking forward to the big game on Sunday night. Finally the Saints get a TV game, against the biggest team of them all (if bigfooty is anything to go by), Everton. Might hang around at a pub in the city somewhere after the bigfooty game to pass the time.

The games involving Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester City and Blackburn are all yet to start. Liverpool should be able to get the job done, Newcastle are over the line already, City are looking relatively safe but have conceded two away goals so need to be careful and Blackburn have a massive task ahead of them.

Hope Liverpool do the job without Owen up front and of course all the other injuries, we still should be able to get by. Wont stay up for it though....need some sleep. Hope we win though, will check when I get home from work tomorrow.

Stevie G in charge too...interesting move. Personally I like Sami as our captain but it looks like that has all changed now.

I can certainly see the point in the UEFA Cup, and am more than happy that we are in it, despite the way we qualified. European competition is something for clubs that are never going to make top 4 to aim for, it brings revenue to the game and the participating clubs, it is another game of football the supporter can watch, and I reckon it is great that clubs get the chance to play teams from other leagues.

City made it through to the next round by the way, 1-0 Anelka scored from a dodgy penalty decision.

3 losses in a row. 3 games without a goal. Phillips starts a 3 match ban. Should i start to worry?
Yes

The danger of having such a small squad is that we will be terribly exposed when the injuries come. That is starting to happen at the moment.

Although even more of a concern is that we are creating very few scoring chances. We really need to win on Sunday but I can't see it turning around at the moment.

Also, well said Moomba.

The UEFA Cup might be a waste of time for the bigger clubs who miss out on the champions league and see it as a poor substitute but the (now shortlived :() jubiliation amongst saints fans for making it into Europe for the first time in 19 years is what it's about. The thing that disappoints me is that a team like Southampton (and almost all of the premiership teams) are that they are better than most of the teams that compete in the first few rounds yet unless we finish top 6 (very hard when there is a distinct gap between the the top 4 or 5 clubs and the rest) or win a cup, we won't be in europe again.

Dodgy doesn't do it justice. Made Robbie Savage look like a fair player in comparison. Should be fined for that.

A fine will do nothing, suspensions are the way to go. How about we start that policy from today ;) I think a foul was there, but the overreaction to it, deserved a free to the opposition and a booking at the very least.

Lokeren can't complain too much because we should have had a legitimate pen shortly after when Conte thought the ball looked like the ref and tried to punch it over for a corner.

Comfortable 3-0 win, Le Tellac, Heskey   and Kewell the scorers.

Hopefully a good draw in the next round awaits.
TLT!!! First goal for the mighty Reds. Apparently from the write up, he was in everything. He could be our Cristiano Ronaldo. Diouf missed a penalty, Im surprised he actually took it, I thought Stevie G or Kewell would be ahead of Diouf.

Ah well, into the second round we go.

The draw is out for the next round of the UEFA Cup.

Man City v Groclin (any info on Groclin from our rabid Polish board members would be appreciated) ;)
Steau Bucharest v Liverpool
Basle v Newcastle

No real easy ones there for any of the English clubs. Matches to be played on November 6 and 27.
