Henderson is the nearest. He picks the ball up deep and can ping it to the wings, make a short pass or join in the attack.

Leeds tactics make Phillips look good. They push 5 or 6 men into the attack giving him a heap of space to make his passes. The downside of that tactic is that Leeds conceded more goals than Fulham who were relegated.

A pure DLP needs to be world class in terms of creativity and passing, to make up for their lack of defensive responsibilities. Phillips isn't anywhere near world class in any aspect of the game. When he has played for England he has passed the ball backwards more than forwards and has broken up promising moves rather than assist them. He is positionally naive and a dud anywhere near the final third.
Don’t think you see much of Leeds and Phillips. We conceded 8 from last 11.
Games where we conceded a heap earlier in the season were with Ayling as cb and/or Phillips missing. Struijk emergence and then Llorente plugged things right up.

Agree he’s not world class but don’t think Henderson or Rice are either. And yes could be better in final third. His role for England lately is different to that at Leeds. Not saying he deserves to start, I’d give that to Henderson because of greater experience

Lol, Phillips hits more long balls than just about anyone in the league. The space between the defence and attack is irrelevant as he is usually going over that line.

Henderson does not play that position. Anyway, shape or form.

Yeah, he hits long balls into touch a lot.

JWP is a better player who can play that same roll, and not get shown up for an inability to defend.

Can't see how England are favourites or 2nd favourites in some markets.
Totally lack scoring power.

Not true. They lack scoring power outside of Harry Kane. They also lack creativity in midfield when you have Rice, Henderson and Phillips there as 2 of your starting 3. The midfield 2 are too far separated from the front 4. It's lump it up to the front 4 and hope they can score.

So...I'm incorrect in saying they lack scoring power...then you state they lack scoring power besides Harry Kane....so do they lack scoring power or not.

Harry Kane is huge scoring power. In terms of number 9s the back up isn't there. But they have Sterling and Sancho on the wings + tall lumps who head a decent amount of goals.

Explain how you think they lack scoring power with a Number 9 who has 163 goals in his last 7 EPL seasons.

TAA injured. Hurts England’s depth but at least for them it’s not a first choice starter like Reece James that has gone down.

Southgate being a muppet as usual by playing players out of position. A LB with no left foot - Trippier is a good defender but every time he got forward he had to cut back onto his right. Grealish down the middle when he's played all season on the left and he's not a goal scorer. Lingard on the right when he's been playing mostly on the left. Then when he takes Grealish and Lingard off he puts Watkins wide left even though he's a central striker.

England started brightly then faded badly. Saka probably their best.

TAA didn't look too happy when he limped off. Hopefully it's not a serious strain. Henderson had a set back yesterday and didn't play.

Who's the other available left back though?
Shaw and Chilwell both being given extra time off because of European finals.

Are these games just friendlies?
Like no World Cup s**t involved or anything like that?

If so, I am not huge on the red card in the France v Wales match.
Yes, strictly a red and in the actual Euros fair enough. But this is a warm up match, surely can't hurt to just give him a yellow.
Not like he was intentionally handballing to stop the goal.

Friendly or not you have to obey the same rules surely. Can’t just have someone hacking players.

They're usually more lenient on reds in friendlies aren't they?

Well none, but that was Southgate's fault. He picked a squad that had 5 RBs and only 2 LBs. He could have included Cresswell, Luke Thomas or Matt Targett - at least in the extended squad.

Yeah but the squad is for the Euros where they will have 3 options for LB (maybe Saka too if they go 3atb).
This is just a friendly.
