UEFA Nations League Finals

Portuguese played great football during the Nations League. Holland doesn't have an answer for their style of play.

2002 - Portugal messed them up in qualifying for the world cup.
2004 knocked them out of the Euro semis in Portugal
2006 knocked them out in the 2nd round of the world cup
2012 knocked them out in the last group game of the Euros

Goes back to the 70's I think the Portugal domination over them. The tournament isn't that of a high magnitude but still great to triumph.

Good to see the Poms get another shootout win just like against Colombia 2018 World Cup.

Simplistic reasoning leads to simplistic conclusions.

What an odd reply. It has a lot to do with what he makes happen himself & not always his teammates dragging his club or country over the line too

What I mean is that saying something like that is making an extremely complex situation way too simple. Sure, his teams' awards are evidence of his quality, but that doesn't show he's the best player in the world.

If you were right, that these trophies mean he's the world's best player, then why do pundits keep arguing about Messi being the best ever player instead of CR? Judging a player is about so much more than trophies.

Players play in different positions for different teams, in different situations and at different moments. Both Messi and Ronaldo have always played for top teams. Teams that have won trophies because they had these players, but similarly they've both won trophies because they played for these teams.

Their situations with their countries are totally different too. Messi has been criticised for not winning the world cup with Argentina, while clearly there is something complex going on in that team. Also, you can say Messi didn't win the world cup because of Higuain. Then there's Ronaldo, who's praised for winning the Euro with Portugal, but what did he actually do that tournament? 3 draws in the group stages (against Iceland, Austria and Hungary). Any other tournament and they're knocked out already. Then 1-0 against Croatia, penalties against Poland, 2-0 against Wales and the final against France. Great story for them, but he scored 3 goals that tournament (2 in the group stage) and he was subbed off in the final after 25'. Portugal has got a lot to thank him for, but not winning that Euro. The truth is, Argentina or Portugal winning or not winning those tournaments doesn't say anything about Messi and Ronaldo's abilities and achievements.

Their club achievements aren't any easier to judge. There have been CLs where Ronaldo carried Real to the final, but was nowhere to be seen in it. Was Barcelona knocked out by Liverpool because Messi came short? Absolutely not, although that's just my opinion. Was Messi to blame when they were knocked out by Mourinho's Inter? Was it Ronaldo's fault that Real only won 2 la liga titles in his 9 seasons there? If there's one thing sure, it's that both players have clearly been on a different level from the other players in their career, but it's extremely hard, if not impossible, to argue one is better than the other.
