I'm still perplexed on the dropping the ball rule. Both teams pick it up, run a bit and drop the ball but no free. it seems like rugby now the way players just run forward and drop it for the next guy to pick it up and drop it.
They haven't been paying it for a couple of months now and it's absolute crap. It's confusing the hell out of me.

The free and 50 against Fletcher (for what looked like a top class spoil on big Will) was a huge turning point in the game as far as I'm concerned.

Umpire: You chopped his arms ...

Fletcher: I spoiled the ball ...

Umpire: 50 metres ...

Fletcher: But I didn't swear ...

Umpire: It was because of your demeanour ...

Me: What ... the ... f...

Does the taking the ball out of the ruck and getting tackled is holding the ball rule still exist??

Either the umpires chose deliberately not to pay them last night or the rule has been completely relaxed since it came in 6 years ago.

Completely lost it at the ***** in yellow last night, felt like ripping out the seat in front of me and belting someone with it.

How was the one near the 50m arc which resulted in a Higgens goal? I think it was Fletch(?) who jumped up and punched the ball, his chest made contact with the side of Higgens who went to ground and somehow that's push in the back.

Thought the umpiring wasn't great tonight, and I agree that the Cooney free for our first goal and the Higgins front on weren't there, but the two Fletcher gave away certainly were frees. The Minson one he certainly chopped Minsons right arm, I'm sure the majority agree it was soft, but it's there in black and white in the rule book you can't do it anymore. The holds on Murphy and Hahn looked fairly blatant.

I would be more concerned with some of your players lack of awareness and the zero impact your two key forwards had last night, as well as being very excited about the way your club plays footy and the bright future that lies ahead.

I reckon you're wrong Palace.

I thought when this rule was introduced, or re-interpretted it was intended that it wasn't put in place to give a free anytime contact was made with a players arms.

There is a difference between chopping of the arms in leiu of going for the footy and making contact with the arms in an attempt to spoil.

Fletcher did not chop Minson's arms.
He made contact with Minson's arms in the act of spoiling the ball and that is or at least should not be a free kick.

Yeah they were far too good for us. Just cut us up in the 2nd half. But I swear McLaren has always had something against Essendon since that Hird comment. And they never seem to pay Lloyd free kicks these days. He doesnt dive!

ha ha not like in years gone by when he was always looked after:):)

That Fletcher 50m penalty was a shocker..Umpire said because he was devour or some shit

Fletcher: You don't even know what that means :thumbsu:

id like to see the game again on tv as level 3 doesnt give u the best view, but u guys were screwed on a fair few calls. i hate it when people try to justify free kicks because of the slightest infrigement that really has no effect on the game. eg the spoil / chopping the arms.

its quite a bit different if a bloke gets burnt on the lead by a forward and has to resort to chopping the arms to get involved in the contest compared to a defender who has made good position to get a nice fist to the ball and in the process scrags a tiny bit of his arm. if its blatant then play it, but footys not about soft free kicks and just ruins the spectacle of 2 blokes giving 100% at a contest.

Is that genuinely what happened? At the ground we had no idea what had happened. The original free was questionable, let alone the penalty. I just assumed Fletcher had sworn at the umpire?

Also, I've read a few times that Fletcher then made a comment along the lines of 'do you even know what that means'; any truth in that?

And that's the exact scenario that saw the rule come in.
The umpires are getting it wrong and not just last night.

From a neutral fan. Essendon had a bad run with the umpires. Especially in the 3rd quarter in their foward line. No the reason you lost Western Bulldogs ran over you. But Still a bad run.

Not going to comment on whether the umpires got it wrong or not, becuase being a doggies supporter my view will seem biased either way.

One thing I will say is, that bad umpiring decisions always even themselves up. Maybe not within the game but it could be next week or the week after, but they always even themselves up!

Essendon will most likely still be in the 8 after this week, so chin up guys.

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing. That Will Minson one is the one decision I thought was very poor... should have been holding the ball.

Regarding the free kick count though, how many of those 20 free kicks do you Essendon supporters think were holding the ball as a result of an Essendon player being run down? I reckon about 6 or 7 at least.

On the flipside how many were missed when the doggies player got run down and the umpire called play on?

Did Fletcher really say that? If so, that's hilarious.

I thought the doggies got a good run with the umps last night, and I can understand the frustration from bombers supporters, the same thing happened with us against geelong. When you work your arse off against a team that is supposedly better than you, and are having the better of the play, only to have it all undone by cheap goals from frees it really hurts.

Not that I was comlaining ;).

Good luck for the rest of the season. Lovett and Hurley = guns.

No doubt the umpiring swung the momentum back our way, the umpiring was horrible and they killed you guys. Any Bulldog supporter that says otherwise is lying through their teeth.

However, I still think we would of won the game when push came to shove, our weight of numbers we pretty overwhelming in the end. The umps did rob us of a game that would of been a hell of a lot closer, we are pretty poor with our skills and you guys showed us up in the first half.

I don't use umpiring decisions as excuses. Well played sir.

Well done Bulldogs, without any doubt the better team!

They scorede 7 goals as a direct result of free kicks, about 2 of them were actually frees. Deffinatelly got the rough end but full credit to the doggies for capitilising on the oppurtunities.

I think you should go back and watch the replay again with a rule book in your hand. I'll say the opposite 7 frees for goals, 5 of them were actual frees the other 2 were pretty ordinary decisions.

Hawthorn supporters are suggesting the Bombers received a poor run with umpires, they hate us nearly as much as Carlton, nearly. Check out Bay 13 where it's every supporter-base for themselves. There are several posts supporting these claims.

Who cares what Bulldogs or Bombers supporters say, it's what the neutrals say (Carlton are not neutral supporters)! ;)

P.S. For what it's worth, Bulldogs were too good.

For the most part, I don't have a problem with the validity of the free kicks. However, if they're going to pay technical free kicks then at least be consistent. I also found it strange that so many free kicks were paid in our defensive 50 when they mostly let the game flow elsewhere.

What free kicks were incorrectly called? I'm not being a smartass, just wondering which ones you aren't happy about.

How is a 20-9 free kick count a disgrace? So you're suggesting when a team gives away free kicks on a football field, that because they have done this umpires should even it up? I think it was mostly due to the bombers being second to the ball and having to do all the chasing.
If only Fred Hollows were still alive ... maybe he could rescue your inspid vision.

All the other bulldog supporters in this thread agree the umpiring is ridiculous and you come up with this pathetic garble without "being a smartass".

You idiot.
