Just received my 'Ultimate Hawks Premiership Team' pack in the mail.

I'm really looking forward to the challenge of selecting our ultimate 25 premiership players & coach!

One of the tough questions I have is: Do we select players based on their involvment with just the HFC? For example, Darren Jarman was a star at the Hawks but probably cemented his status in the 1997 GF (playing for Crows). Does that warrant selection in the Hawks team?

And do we take into account their whole careers, or just their performance on GF day?

Good luck selecting your team fellow Hawkers!! :thumbsu:

Full back, Centre Half Back, Full forward and Rover is already causing me some stress :D

Moore or Langford. Knights or Mew. Dunstall or Hudson. Matthews, or Platten or Crimmins or Crawford.

Can you get away with Lethal in the centre? Something like this?

C: Pritchard - Matthews - Crawford

R: Scott - Tuck - Platten

I. Crimmins - Dipper.

I really like the idea of selecting players only based on Grand Final performance otherwise it's same shit, different day.

Certainly no one would ever select Paul Dear in a 'conventional' team before Darren Jarman but in this case you'd have to.

What a wonderful dilemma!

I'd go with Langford, Knights (i am biased) and Dunstall.

Enjoy :)

certainly going to be interesting, but I dont know enough about the players from 61 and 71. Might have to watch the 71 GF again.

The only certainties I have at the moment are - Tuck as Captain, Ayers in the BP and The Kid at CHF. This is my version of the ultimate Premiership team (any chance of fielding this team for the rest of this year, they may still be fitter than our current squad) –

B: Ayers - Moore - Collins
HB: Tuck (C) - Mew - Hodge
C: Eade - Wallace - Dipper
HF: Buckenara - Brereton - Paul Dear
F: Matthews - Dunstall - Moncrief

Followers - Scott - Platten - Crimmins

I/C - Dew - Keddie – Langford

Emer – Franklin – Kennedy - Morrisey

Basically selected on 1. Performances over multiple Grand Finals 2. Individual brilliance (Match changing efforts) 3. Info from the HFC website on the games I did not see.

Backs -
Ayers - No brainer - 2 NS medals - man was built for Premierships.
Moore - Listed among the best in 2 GF's playing from FB
Collins - Great performances in '88 and '89

Half backs
Tuck - No Brainer
Mew - Just got the nod over Knights but could have been biased by seeing more of his play.
Hodge - Based on '08 "quarterback" role - Brilliant game - NS medal

Centre
Eade - Eade just got the nod but line ball with Pritchard
Wallace - 3 GF's and listed among the best Hawks in all of them.
Dipper - NEVER let us down in a GF – Superstar

Half Forwards
Buckenara - Prolific goal scorer in GF's - 4 in '86 and 4 in '89.
Dermie - No contest for mine - 3 Goals per flag- Gold
Dear, P - NS in the '91 got him over the line. Changed the outcome that day.

Forwards
Matthews - No Brainer - Goal Freak - 3 Goals per flag.
Dunstall - 23 Goals in 4 flags- WOW
Moncrief - 7 Goals in 2 flags

Followers
Scott - Was the soul of Hawthorn and captained 2 flags
Platten - The rat was a legend and never far from the bottom of a pack. This was no different in his Flags. Sustained Flag success.
Crimmins – It’s Peter Crimmins – 2 goals also

I/C
Dew - IMO an absolute master stroke by Clarko - turned '08 in our favor with 1 qtr of brilliance.
Keddie - Based on turning the '71 Grand Final - This is one I saw not too long ago - great effort in an awesome GF.
Langford - might be biased but there was no way Superman was missing out in one of my "all time" teams.

Emer -
Franklin - Just for the ability to do the impossible. Plus both his '08 goals were vital. 1st put us back in front and the second really put the game beyond Geelong.
Kennedy - unlucky to miss as he was very consistent and hard in all the GF's he played in.
Morrisey - Was a freak and played well in '91 and '89. very under rated player for mine.

Brendan Edwards had something like 30 to 38 kicks (no one's really sure) and 3 handballs in the '61 flag - he's a lock for the centre for mine.

Speaking of '61, it hasn't really been spruiked on here much, but this is the 50th anniversary of our first premiership.

There will be a reunion later in the season, and also a book and DVD coming out to celebrate it - save your bickies because this will be essential to the supporter who wants to know where we came from.

Edwards and Arthur would be automatic incluisions you'd think. I'd suggest Ian Law would also be a chance.

If Paul Dear is getting a gig in some sides for his NS Medal, then why isn't John Hendrie getting a mention? Some supporters need to get their copy of the 1976 GF out and watch it again ;)

the majority of my team is made up of players from the 70's and 80's because lets face it , thats when we produced the players that have us where we are today .
i have also added the current crop of hodge , franklin , mitchell and rioli because i believe those blokes are the main reason we broke our drought and the ones i can see as being an integral part of our next .
crawford is a lock for his long service , brownlow and premiership . he is a massive reason we won in 2008 .

Peck would also be a worthy nominee given his move to the ruck in the second half sparked 10 Hawthorn goals.

Spot on about Hendrie - I really need some time to do this thread justice.

I understand that mate, but it will just end up another 'Best of' thread same as all the others - I might be in the minority but I sort of understood this thread to be about blokes who set themselves and played out of their skins on the big day.

Something different, actually original.

And as much as I love Crawf (and his game in '08 was good) there would be a lot of players in front of him.

I'm going to do some research and come back with a side of Hawks that brought their best on the biggest day of all.
